Combining its inherited spider skills in trapping and ambushing targets with poison and sticky webs with its draconic abilities, the dragon spider is truly a nightmare to encounter. With a set of six wings, the dragon spider is incredibly agile in the air, capable of hovering and attacking while in mid flight. Its eight limbs and body are covered in tiny sensitive hairs that pick up the slightest vibrations in the air, allowing it to hunt in complete darkness, as well as when hunting invisible or concealed prey.

The dragon spider's limbs end in wickedly sharp blades, capable of cleaving through armor and flesh with ease. Its poisonous bite paralyzes prey quickly, allowing it to feed at its leisure. When all else fails, the dragon spider can release a concentrated line of acid to dissolve more troublesome prey, but typically this is used as a last resort. Occasionally, this acid can be mixed with sticky webbing, allowing it to entangle prey in its acidic breath weapon.

Dragon spiders radiate an aura of silence, making them the bane of spellcasters who rely on verbal components, as well as those who rely on sound for communication and perception. However, the extreme hubris of the dragon spider, much like any other dragon, often gets the better of it from time to time and it will lower its aura of silence to gloat or to taunt its prey. This often becomes the most opportune time to strike against it.

Dragon spiders speak both Common and Draconic, although they tend to favor Draconic over Common.

Combat

Aura of Silence (Sp):
A Dragon spider radiates a 20 ft. aura of silence. This ability is constant, but the dragon spider can suppress or resume it as a swift action.

All sound within this area is stopped: Conversation is impossible, spells with verbal components cannot be cast, and no noise whatsoever issues from, enters, or passes through the area. An unwilling creature can attempt a Will save to negate the spell-like effect and can use spell resistance, if any. Items in a creature’s possession or magic items that emit sound receive the benefits of saves and spell resistance, but unattended objects and points in space do not. This spell-like ability provides a defense against sonic or language-based attacks.

Blindsense (Ex):
Dragon spiders can pinpoint creatures within a distance of 60 feet. Opponents the dragon spider can’t actually see still have total concealment against the dragon spider.

Breath Weapon (Su):
A dragon spider has one type of breath weapon, a 100 ft. line of acid, usable as a standard action every 1d4 rounds. This deals 14d6 acid damage, DC 25 reflex for half. The save DC is Constitution-based and includes a +2 feat bonus from ability focus (breath weapon).

Keen Senses (Ex):
A dragon spider sees four times as well a human in shadowy illumination and twice as well in normal light. It also has darkvision out to 120 feet.

Poison (Ex):
Injury, Fortitude DC 25, initial damage: 1d8 Strength, secondary damage 2d6 Strength. The save DC is Constitution-based and includes a +2 feat bonus from ability focus (poison).

Web (Ex):
Dragon Spiders often wait in their webs or in trees, then lower themselves silently on silk strands and leap onto prey passing beneath. A single strand is strong enough to support the dragon spider and one creature of the same size. Dragon spiders can throw a web eight times per day. This is similar to an attack with a net but has a maximum range of 50 feet, with a range increment of 10 feet, and is effective against targets up to one size category larger than the dragon spider. An entangled creature can escape with a successful Escape Artist check (DC 23) or burst it with a Strength check (DC 27). Both are standard actions. The check DCs are Constitution-based, and the Strength check DC includes a +4 racial bonus.

Dragon spiders often create sheets of sticky webbing from 15 to 60 feet square, depending on the size of the dragon spider. They usually position these sheets to snare flying creatures but can also try to trap prey on the ground. Approaching creatures must succeed on a DC 20 Spot check to notice a web; otherwise they stumble into it and become trapped as though by a successful web attack. Attempts to escape or burst the webbing gain a +5 bonus if the trapped creature has something to walk on or grab while pulling free. Each 5-foot section has 20 hit points, and sheet webs have damage reduction 5/—.
A dragon spider can move across its own web at its climb speed and can pinpoint the location of any creature touching its web.

Skills:
Dragon spiders have a +8 racial bonus on Climb checks. A dragon spider can always choose to take 10 on Climb checks, even if rushed or threatened. Dragon spiders use either their Strength or Dexterity modifier for Climb checks, whichever is higher.

*Dragon spiders have a +8 racial bonus on Hide and Move Silently checks when using their webs.
