Avatar Theme Week: Elemental Week (August 10-16)

The Age of the Elementals is upon us, at least for the week of August 10-16. What this means, well, you decide. Stick with the Alchemical Classics (Fire, Water, Earth, and Air) or branch out into Chemical Elements like Redcloak (Chlorine? Titanium? Osmium?), or something else entirely (Surprise? Heart? Cake?), anything is possible. (Element of Possibility?)

Can I get my current avatar with black pants and shirt on, wearing a black fedora. The clothes don't have to be plain black, but at least make anything you put on them darker colored. Could you make some parts of him semi transparent, as if he were fading in and out. Not all of him, but maybe a leg, an arm, and anything else you want besides the head. That would be wonderful. Also, a shadow ball in one non faded hand.

Do you WANT an Elemental of Composites to show up? as literally the very concept of combined things showing up as a pure element, thus defeating the very purpose of pure elements at all and thus causing a paradox? or heck, just be thankful I don't choose the Element of Paradox itself! that would break reality right quick.

I should confess that what you're actually looking at is some clip-art layering done in photoshop (don't worry mods it's all legal). Filled in a clip-art outline, and then dropped a few spirals over it with the appropriate filters and transparencies.

Well, I decided to change my avatar idea. If someone has started making the first one, that's awesome, and please say so, but otherwise, I want this instead. My character, wearing all black, with a fedora. Same clothing as before (can have decoration), but with mist swirling around him, obscuring parts of his body.

Whenever I hear/see "element of surprise" I can't help but think of Eddie Izzard's stand up routine from "Dressed to Kill" about the First Battalion Transvestite Brigade. Which, if you have never watched, I highly recommend it (and if you have already watched it I still recommend watching it again and again it's that funny). :smallbiggrin: That could make for an awesome avatar now that I think of it. If I had to guess, I would say that, over time, fewer and fewer people made avatars either due to becoming busy or bored or any other number of reasons; meanwhile, new people ask for avatars every day. Meanwhile, new people aren't stepping up probably because they don't think their artwork is good enough.

Anyway, I just had an idea for my own avatar. I hope I can find time to make it before the week starts.

I occasionally skim the last couple of pages to see if something catches my interest, but I'm usually too busy to make avatars – I used to make myself a new one every month or so, plus every theme week, but I simply don't have the time anymore. Now I'm glad if I manage something for theme weeks or DYF.

... I should start to think about something for this theme week. I'll probably go for one of the classical elements, maybe ice or water. Plants/earth would be more fitting, but also kinda boring - I'm always green. :smalltongue:

Speaking for myself, I do what I can, but most of the requests demand far more than what I can provide.

Edit: And then there's a bit of an intimidation factor, really. A lot of the people requesting avatars already have custom ones, and they're often quite good. How are you supposed to compare to that?

Mercury elemental avatar, with aluminum clothing for modesty. copper hair, because she is not a pure elemental. technically she is apart of a greater Metal element, and mercury is just a manifestation of that, and so is copper. what she is standing on is well, more mercury. since she is an elemental, she can obviously walk on mercury, and she is currently in the Elemental Plane of Metal. the blue sky is actually cobalt.

Went with a melted metal look instead of the much more aesthetically pleasing twisted wire, so it's kind of a grotesque. Maybe I'll fix it up a bit later.

its this specific Inkscape thing.

I duplicated the materials they are placed on top of, then I went to "Filters", picked "Non-realistic 3-d shaders" and there they were, then applied them to the duplicated objects and placed them on top of the first ones. I'd try to make the thing itself metallic from "Bevels", rather than putting something over it, but when I do so, it disappears when it becomes a non-inkscape picture thing, which is weird.

Both of the recent theme weeks have fallen on a time when I am either not 100% or lacking reliable internet. At about the end of the week my internet returns so I can upload images in less than several hours, and I may have a graphics tablet by then.

I'll be happy to do any leftovers then, but I am hoping the current requests are done by that time as they have been there for a while. I will let you folks know.

I also tend to avoid OotS style and have previously only made avatars for people I know or during the reanimation theme week.

I really like the avatars here so far. ^^ I feel like I should have gone with a rainstorm theme, to be honest.
I had thought I would not get to take a photo as it is not rain season, but there is a high chance of rain today. We shall see. :p

you could be a blizzard, cold and full of snowflakes.

you could be a fluffy cloud amidst the sunshine.

you could be steam rising from an engine.

or smoke from a factory

or if you want to mix with earth, you can be a sandstorm.

or perhaps you are a tornado, whirling about.

or perhaps you are helium elemental, happily living in a hot air balloon or zeppelin.

or a neon elemental escaping from a neon sign. though that might be too close to plasma.

or a fog or mist elemental, drifting near the ground.

or if you want to go into space, you can a nebula elemental, a giant gas cloud amidst the stars, full of wonderful colors

any of those sound good?

well technically, Homestuck refers to Void as an aspect. which is not the word element. and technically the void it refers to is a metaphorical void rather than a literal one. even John Egbert's Breath is more about the abstract meaning of Breath, which is movement and freedom, literal breath and wind might just be a side effect. To me it seems too abstract to be an element in that kind of form, but thats not for me to decide. thats just my opinion on the matter. other people might say differently, who knows?

oh and I decided to tinker with my mercury elemental a bit, and managed to improve it, hopefully:

it shows up, but for some reason inkscape makes the actual boundaries a little larger than the thing actually is when I apply filters like that to make it metallic, so I can't fill it up because that would play havoc with the 120x120 boundary thing, make it smaller to see when its an avatar.

All real members of the spanish inquisition have facial hair. But no I'm afraid I can't do any modifications, currently heading off into the wilderness for a few days.

You could do it in Paint I think. I cleaned it up a bit more (not that you see it in avatar size), but shaving him is a bit more than I can do tonight.

Eh, there's virtual sweets down there for anyone who wants them. I'm voting we do a more town-focused deal first, rather than trying to run plots just yet. Once we have a deal we're working on we can do more stuff. That's how most of the FFRP stuff seems to work - there's always fun going on in some tavern or other little place, while big plots are more sporadic.
