I honestly have no idea whatsoever where to begin finding locations to start playing.

have you tried your local game shop?
You could try and get your friends into it.
Or you could probably find a forum somewhere?

In-person, game shops are a good way to find people, and so are meetups (through meetup.com).

If you're okay with online, a lot of people run games over Roll20 or Skype, organized on the forum or in the IRC channel.

There are usually several recruiting DnD 3.5 and Pathfinder games right here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?51-Finding-Players-(Recruitment)).

If you're looking for IRL games, look for a game shop near where you live. Anywhere that sells the books (they would be 4e or Next now) that isn't a general bookstore (I used to buy at Books and Company) should at least know where you can find games.

RPG game find (rpggamefind.com) has listing of local games looking for players.
If you can't find an in person game, roll20.net is really good ad web hosted games, and there are a ton of places there for new players to play and learn the various systems.
