Hello denizens of the playground. For a campaign I'm running, I'm looking for the class that works best as a sheriff. I'm hoping for a wild west kind of feel to the abilities, so with the skills to collect information, solve crimes and get in dust-ups with criminals, but also respected by the citizens. I was looking at the classes and I think Marshal works well but I want your opinion, Oh Mighty, Learned Ones.

A little more back-story for those interested, the human nation has allied with the orcs and are soon to go to war. To field the largest force possible, the town guards are all being pressed into service however, to maintain law and order in the realm, a special force of trained operatives have been dispatched to every city, town and village with the power to maintain law however necessary.

Urban Ranger (this one (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070228a), not that one (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#rangerVariantUrbanRang er)) works pretty well for this purpose I think. If you want to customize it further (for example by replacing ranger spellcasting with bonus feats), look at the list of alternative class features (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?PHPSESSID=6ckpnm4ufhn5aan9m4n1dg7cq2&topic=7908).

Depending on how high level you want him to be, there are a few prcs which also have a good thematic thing going: Vigilante (Complete Adenturer), Bloodhound (Complete Adventurer), Justicar (Complete Warrior) and Crimson Scourge (Cityscape).

Thanks, I appreciate it. I never liked the urban ranger variant given in UA because it seemed like a lot of the ranger's power was lost. But the first link looks good. And I would prefer base classes only as it allows a bit more freedom, and I can show these sheriff's at a whole heap of stages in training.
