I'm looking for the name and source of a particular type of monster, which I believe is a type of giant.
IIRC they ordinarily live in family units or small clans and are more or less peaceful. However, occasionally during/after a pregnancy a female giant of this species will start bloating up to another size category and become ravenously hungry, to the point of attempting to eat her family/spouse if they don't scour the countryside for anything remotely edible to shovel down her gullet.
This madness/ravenousness/brutishness is inevitably fatal in the long run, but feeding the giantess keeps her alive for longer.
They looked sort of like lumpy, overgrown, ruddy smurfs or oversized peasants from the illustration, IIRC.
