Hello there!

Assume you play a 6 level spellcaster that gets to prepare 4 spells of any (9 level spellcaster) spell list each day (for each spell level).

Which spells do you prepare?

My own list so far (I lack experience with higher level spells :/ ) :

1.
Entangle
Vanish
Snowball
Blood Money

2.
Scorching Ray
Animate Dead, lesser
Create Pit
Invisibility

3.
Animate Dead
Haste
Invisibility Sphere
Protection from Energy

Generic question, generdic answer.

Depends on the enviroment and setting, if you are going to adventure in a dungeon or to stay in town you prepare different spells and spells are A LOT situational.

For example, is stronger a Fireball or Charme Person when you are in town for talking etc?

Regardless of setting there are usually clear winners for their level (haste, control winds, animate dead @ 3rd...) - but for the sake of simplicity I'd say combat only unless it's an AMAZING utility spell.

Assuming you mean in the Pathfinder system, assuming you mean for a 6th level spell caster (thus able to cast 3rd level spells at max), and assuming you mean a non-specialist (i.e. you have not built for summoning, enchantment, etc.) I would suggest as follows:

0- Create Water, Detect Magic, Ghost Sound, and Prestidigitation
1st- Color Spray, Entangle, Mudball, and Silent Image
2nd- Glitterdust, Mirror Image, Scorching Ray, and Rope Trick
3rd- Fly, Stone Shape, Rain of Frogs and Wind Wall

I was referring to the maximum spell level available, not the caster level.
