If the content from OotS was turned into a movie/TV show, what would it be rated?

Vote away!

I would say PG 13, it doesn't have any nudity That isn't covered up or blood all around. It does have some, but you can't really have much gore in a Stick figure option. It does have some "dirty" jokes.

Partial/Censored Nudity ^^ (other cases of naked Elan are strewn throughout the comic)

/NITPICK!!!

But I agree with you, yes, PG-13. I was thinking it would be totally sweet if there was a TV-14/PG-13 show/movie that followed the storyline of OotS.

No Nudity? (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0025.html)

No Blood? (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0265.html)

You might want to re-read the archives, you know. :smalltongue:

PG-13, some profane language, mild comic violence and some sexual references.

You neglected to explain what the ratings mean: http://www.mpaa.org/FlmRat_Ratings.asp

It's not like everyone here is from America.

Why is it that it seems NC-17 (No one Under 17) is a stricter rating than R (No one Under 18)?

Regardless I'd put OotS as an R rated movie. I mean, Nudity, Blood, Decapitation of living creatures, lots and lots of violence, even if as a comic it is cartoony, if it were a movie it would not necessarily be as such.

True the language isn't so bad but a Picture is worth a thousand words.

Edit: Admittedly I accidentally voted PG-13

I suppose the difference between R and NC-17 is that no one under 18 may watch the film without an 18 year old parent or guardian. With NC-17, no one under 17 may watch the film, period.

Not that I find the rating system useful or anything. If anything, I find them to limit the artform of film to some rather arbitrary standards.

At any rate, PG-13 is probably what this would be.

I'm not familiar with the US rating system. However, under the UK system, it'd be U (Universal) but not Uc (Universal, especially young children) as unrealistic, cartoon characters suffer violence but the good guys generally win.

R is noone under 17 without a parent or guardian, NC-17 is no one under 17 period. X is no one under 18 period.

PG, because, well, I'm not so bright. <_<
And it can't possibly be worse than the cartoons nowadays... in spirit, if not in practice. "Sneak attack, bitch!"

People younger than 18 can get into an R-rated movie if accompanied by a parent or guardian. People younger than 17 can't get into an NC-17 movie no matter what.

PG-13. While there is alot of sexual content, most of it is done 'offscreen'. The worst it really shows is kissing. Also, the gore never gets beyond a thin cuts or tiny stab wounds.

One movie? Ha! When I get my money, I'm making one per book!

Wait, what was this topic about? Miko? MitD? Evilgasms? Oh, I see, ratings.

PG-13. If they wanted to make it "R," I'd find ways to tone the script down...

^^ A few examples of gore that's far beyond thin cuts and tiny stab wounds, such as impalement, bisection, writing in human blood, decapitation of helpless opponents, puddles of blood, deep wounds, slashes literally strewn across the character's faces. Also see my above post where Belkar's eating chunky salsa made of kobold blood. However, I still agree that it's PG-13.

Its not like your 5-10 year old doesn't see worse on Pokemon or GI Joe or any of the numerous other cartoons on TV. Stop coddling the kids.

The pms and O jokes alone make it pg-13. That's before the audience adds in its various commentary.

Lol, if this is rated "R" then 8-bit theatre is rated "Obsene" and Penny Arcade is rated "Your eyes will bleed"

I would definately say pg-13 due to the adult humour and minor gore.

R is the correct rating, officially, I think. It seems things are rated on their "worst"/highest-rated moment, and the scene where the gnomish blacksmith begs for help when captured and used as a pet by Thog (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0142.html) is definitely R-rated.

To back this up, an entire half-series boxed set of the series "Angel" was rated 18 in the UK instead of 15 because of one scene of helplessness/implied torture like this. I was actually a bit disturbed by the strip in question - it definitely made the bad guys bad.

I think that's more violent than gory. I mean, in the OotS-verse, when you cut someone's head off, you get the head and the body, no blood or anything.

I think turning it into a live-action format would completely miss the point.

A cartoon would be far more appropriate.

I voted as R due to the violence...Translated into live action, it seems like there would be quite a bit of blood and gore. Also, if it were made as an R it would be a better movie. It seems that actors and directors are always talking about the really good part they had to cut out or edit in some way to get in under a PG-13 (and in some cases to get in under an R). Lord of the Rings was borderline (there was a contractual obligation to bring it in under at PG-13) and I wonder if it would have made it under as it was shown without the muscle you get when you're doing a major film adaption of Lord of the Rings... Much as I like OOTS, I don't think it would have quite that much oomph behind it. And the little sex there is in OOTS might be the tipping point regardless. A lot of violence with a little sex and nudity is worse than a lot of violence to some people. Funny sex seems to have a good shot at a PG-13, but funny violence with sex not so much.

BTW - Does anyone else get as much enjoyment out of reading the reviews on sites like ParentsTelevisionCouncil.org and Capalert.com? It makes me feel so bad (in that good kind of way) when I read about how bad the things I enjoy watching are. Their interpretations of some of the stuff, and even just the things they pick to complain about, make me laugh out loud.

There is enough sexual references/innuendo, swearing and violence together to place it solidly in the PG-13 camp for me. Over here I'd probably rate it 12+. It's really not that bad, I could have watched it at more or less any age and not been scarred by it in the least. But then, I was playing M-rated games when I was 10...

Since we don't use that system I voted "other", but I guess something similar would be applicable. Kids! Only read this comic in the company of your parents!
