View Full Version : [Week 6] Which is the Playground's favorite monster?! - Rock solid!

Here is the point: We all put here our favorite creature/monster, and then at the end of each day "this" post will be updated with a table containing which creature has been selected and how many people do love it. At the end of the week we will see which monster is your favorite of the selected type or subtype. Every type and subtype will be randomly selected (by me, or at the forum dice, taking suggestions from you, fellow playgrounders,) or it could be in order, we'll see if this gets crowded enough. Remember that this isn't a competition, it is just a little game, so don't try to convince others to change their choices as they have their favorite monsters as you have yours. I'm not planning to show every nickname, so I want to order it from books/sources where they are found, also I will make a top 5 if we reach enough votes.

This week type/subtype is:

Earth subtype!

My vote: I'll go along with the Earth Elemental, also a point for the Earth Elemental Monolith. These two are personal favorites (duh?) Also, set another +1 to the Mineral Warrior creature, for a +1 template, and the flavor it gives, it is pretty good and the look of the creatures is ameizing~

The date to finish the count will be Sathurday, August 9nd; from that point on, no vote will be added to the popularity table, but feel free to keep commenting your favorites.

The sources you can use to pick your favorite are on the list below, also if you have more than one favorite, don't hesitate to show it to us! No creature whose entry wasn't originally of the selected type is allowed (for example: if the week's monster type is: Dragon, no Dragonwrought Kobold is available, just creatures with the Dragon type as their base creature are allowed, in this case; DW Kobold got it fom a feat.) At the same time, no creatures that obtained their subtype are allowed to be chosen (for example, Dragonblood subtype week, no dragonborn human is allowed, because human wasn't originally intended to have dragonblood subtype, but its subtype is "dragonblood" because of the Dragonborn template; however Silverbrow human is allowed because its original subtype IS dragonblood.) Also, when a creature is based on a template (such as the Lich, the Vampire, or the Zombie) the template is allowed to be selected as your vote; however, you cannot specify a creature with its own entry adding an alien template. TL;DR: You can select the Skeleton Creature as your favorite Undead, but not a T-Rex Skeleton (using two creatures.)

Oread. Definitely oread. It's my favorite kind of cheese, meaning cheese that leads to large quantities of earthquakes.

you messed up with the favorites table, claiming maruts are undead and liches are oozes. I don't know about my favorite Earth type, though. Maybe tommorrow.

Well, time to go through the old sourcebooks and see if I can find any obscure Earth creatures... I'll say some more later, but my first vote goes to the Earth Weird.

Oh man, I think I'm going to have to go with Brown Dragons. I'm just a big fan of Brown Dragons in general, what with the 500' tremorsense. Nothing else particularly stands out.

Here's an official Mineral Warrior (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20031003e) link. I'm going to guess that this one will win, due to its part in character optimization and the lack of interesting/unique creatures with the earth subtype.

Stonechild (Miniatures Handbook/Races of Stone) - quite suboptimal as a PC race, but I'm very fond of them as NPCs.

We have Gargoyles, Crysmal, Xorn and Thoqqua. Those are all kinda cool. Ish. And that's just SRD content.

Thoqqua, because Magma Worms.

Xorn, because my uncle actually used them once in a very cool way.

Earth Genasi, because one of my friends found a version with the racial ability
Sink (Ex): You sink like a rock. You cannot make Swim checks to stay afloat.
And it didn't remove the need to breath.

That's awesome. Another vote for those Earth Genasi.

After much thought, I guess I have to say Brainstealer Dragon. Again. The biggest surprise for me is that it is Earth Subtype!

Earth Elemental. It just is what I think of when I hear 'earth subtype'.

Earth Elemental.

Why do I never see these threads on the main page? I have to click on the OP's username to check if any have come up recently...

EDIT: The thread was started on the 10th but all votes have to be in by the 9th? :smallconfused::smallyuk:
I think there's a mistake here somewhere :smallwink::smallbiggrin::smallbiggrin:

DOUBLE EDIT:

This brings up some really interesting BBEG ideas mental images.

I'm going to go with the Earth Whisper, because it defies so many expectations and messes with your head.
It's an elemental with the earth subtype but it's incorporeal, and makes for a nasty fight.

Salt mephit. Total a-holes to all that they meet. They act like they have 10 times the hit dice and provoke people to kill the messenger. Like mark wahlberg's character in the departed.

From Planescape 2ed: "The sarcastic and acidulous wit of salt mephits lowers their life expectancy dramatically." & "Spellcasters who deliver a nasty, foulmouthed salt mephit to an enemy thereby declare open warfare."

Earth Elementals, I think. They're just really neat, and a classic.

Offhand, the urdunnir dwarves (2nd edition, also I think they are mentioned in 3E's players' guide to faerun and in races of stone), are one of the cooler dwarf subraces that I can recall.

The first module that I ever ran (ruins of undermountain: the haunted halls, or something) was a 2E story set around a forgotten urdunnir library in the Forgotten Realms.
