Is an avolakia large or medium? A friend of mine claims the entry lists 'large abberation' but a 'face' of 5x5.

It is exactly that: Large with a 5x5 ft face.

Larger size does not necessarily mean larger face. Avolakias are really tall and really thin, hence why the have a Large size with the face of a medium/small creature.

Huh, alright. does that mean that they're 10ft tall though? Or simply medium sized?

Do note that the Avolakia are detailed in a 3.0 book, where monsters had individual sizes. In 3.5, it'd be represented in combat as a 10x10x10 cube.

Ignore this.

On the topic of the 3.0 Monster Manual 2 and its weird entries, was there ever a 3.5 update for that book? I've only ever seen the original 3.0 version of that particular book, both in stores and online.

There was an update booklet (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20030718a) for it, in addition to its errata (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/er/20040125a). Incidentally, the former specifies that Avolakia occupy the normal amount of space for a Large creature (a 10'x10' square).
