I'm wanting to play an arcane caster for a new campaign, but I don't want to play another generic god wizard. I was flipping through Complete Arcane for a completely different purpose, and saw the Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil, and thought of playing a wizard who's obsessed with colors and colorful spells. And so was born Crayola the Magnificent.

I'm not sure what level we're going to be starting at yet, probably 3-5. I'll probably just go straight wizard in to Iot7V, unless there's another prestige class that fits well I'm not thinking of.

I'm looking for suggestions on building him. Mainly spells and feats. I want to be optimized, while sticking to the theme as much as possible. I don't need every single spell to be related to colors, but I'd like to have options of as many as I can come up with. And ones that are kind of tenuously color related are fine too (I thought of the orb spells, since they're each a different color).

Color Spray is your friend.

Any Light or Pattern descriptor spell is your friend, as is Prestidigitation (air sketch), Color Spray, and all things Prismatic.

I'd recommend specializing in Abjuration, and going Wizard 3/ Master Specialist 6/ IotSV 7/ Master Specialist 4. You need Spell Focus and Greater Spell Focus for Abjuration and Skill Focus: Spellcraft to qualify for IotSV, you can just take Spell Focus: Abjuration and Master Specialist will give you the other two for free.

Everything an Abjurer gets from Master Specialist is quite good, but don't forget that the major esoterica is only usable 3/day. You'll get a decent bonus on Dispel checks, which is added after your caster level so for example at level 20 your Greater Dispel Magic will be 1d20+20+5. Take the feat Planar Touchstone from the Planar Handbook for Catalogues of Enlightenment for the Inquisition domain's granted power for an additional +4 bonus to dispel checks, and this can be gained fairly early.

Otherwise just follow the God Wizard handbook (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1570.0).

Except none of that really helps out with the theme I'm going for at all. I specifically don't want to play another generic god wizard. I've played with plenty of them, and played a couple myself. I'm bored with them now.

Master specialist might not be a bad idea though. I forgot it gives you some of the feat prerequisites for Iot7V for free.

In that case, I'd probably go generalist or domain wizard instead, possibly Wizard 5/ Incantatrix 4 into IotSV so you can add Persistent Spell to as many color-related buffs as possible. There are plenty of prismatic spells (http://dndtools.eu/spells/?name=prismatic&range=&spell_resistance=&area=&duration=&saving_throw=&casting_time=&school__slug=&sub_school__slug=&descriptors__slug=&verbal_component=1&somatic_component=1&material_component=1&arcane_focus_component=1&divine_focus_component=1&xp_component=1&rulebook__slug=&description=&class_levels__slug=&domain_levels__slug=&_filter=Filter), though it's sad that Prismatic Aura and Prismatic Bow get discharged so they're ineligible for Persistent Spell. You can still have Persistent Fire Shield twice, a red one and a blue one, probably also Death Armor (SC) and make it purple or black. Spell Thematics (http://dndtools.eu/feats/players-guide-to-faerun--22/spell-thematics--2714/) could be useful, "prismatic" would make your spells multicolored.

Edit: (Greater) Luminous Armor, too! Use Spell Thematics to make it appear as multiple colors instead of just a bright light!

This reminds me of Sparkles the Wonder Kobold. He was a kobold sorcerer wild mage with every single prismatic spell as well as every spell with the word "color" in its name. Also he burnt as a lot of Presdigitation recoloring EVERYTHING. Grandted I used sorcerer so it is not as applicable, but I recommend Spell Thematics. I had "Rainbows and Glitter" as mine and was able to cast the most noxious glitter dust (the glitter spouted rainbow glitter).

The SpC has several spells with "rainbow" in the name.

Blinding Color Surge would be perfect. (And it's a good spell.)

Color Spray and Glitterdust are my first two thoughts. And it doesn't quite fit, but you might also want Melf's Unicorn Arrow.
