Monster PCs

Just from viewing the basic rules pdf and hoard of the dragon queen supplement pdf got me wanting to ask how the monsters would hold up being played as normal characters, like for example the hobgoblin. Can anyone with the starter set/phb comment on how badly they would be overshone, or if they can be played normally like any other character?

A CR 1/2 generic thug has... 3d8+3 hp iirc, and attacks twice in a round. Goblins get extra actions. From the monsters I've seen, I feel like I'd rather play one of those than a PC, honestly...
