My Summoner just hit 9th level, and will likely take the Improved Familiar feat. I'm wondering which the best Improved familiar is. I'm mainly looking for safe scouting capabilities and also increase my economy for when I get more wands, so having hands and being able to speak is probably a must. Oh, and my Summoner is LE.

You've just described an Imp.

Exactly. They're CE, though, so you'd have to settle for a Quasit; basically the same, but just a tiny bit worse.

Alignment: Always lawful evil
EDIT: Noticed this is tagged PF, but they're still LE.

You've just described an Imp.Yeah, Imp is very good. but imps can betray me at any time for their own gain. Kinda dangerous. Still my #1 pick, but any other suggestions?

I'm personally a fan of the Doru Div. (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/outsiders/divs/div-doru) They're very similar to the IMP, but with the added benefits of a slightly stronger spell list, and telepathy.

Tripurasura is the only lawful evil option with hands aside from Imp.

Well, the Imp Consular has telepathy as well, and I'm past 8th level. Does the Doru have hands?

Oh crap, sorry about that. For some reason I have it ingrained in my mind that Imps are demons and Quasits are devils, when in fact it's the other way around :smalleek:

So could any other familiar. Just do the LE thing and make it clear to your new Imp buddy that there's a lot of soul-gathering opportunities in it for him if he stays loyal and a humiliating death in it for him if he doesn't.

Hmm...Heh, what kinds of humiliating deaths  I have like Acid Splash as my only offensive spell.

Ideally, whatever kind will make it look the worst to its boss (assuming that devils in Pathfinder still reform back in Hell at some point after being killed).

Honestly in that scenario a Cacodaemon is a lot worse. And the Imp can still benefit from delivering the enemies you killed.

Other options:
- Cacodaemon (they're the same but they hate you for being alive so unless you're undead...yeah)
- Div (I wouldn't go with a familiar that sows "misfortune and ruin" tbh)
- Isitoq (a lot less capable but also a lot less dangerous if you happen to have Control Undead or Command Undead)
- Tripurasura (less scouting but reliable and is trying to recruit you for his causes, there may be some good deals in there)
- Shikigami (yeah well Invisibility and Statue make this thing actually great, also commune with nature is imho a better spell than commune)
