Maybe this has already been brought up, but would it be possible to implement a CAPTCHA system for when someone signs up for a new account? Would that cut down on the "Watch X online FREE!" postings?

Or has this already been done and there are humans out there doing it? (It's been a while since I signed up myself, of course.)

Anyhoo, just a suggestion.

We did use a CAPTCHA previously, it had little to no effect and was hindering actual users registering. We now use a CAPTCHA-like system which isn't having the effect we would like, but isn't hindering actual users registering.

A large number of forums are having luck with the following strategy:

Don't allow new users to post links. Force them to have posted four or five times before allowing them. Anyone who tries to embed a link on their first post is automatically marked as spam.

It's a minor inconvenience for new posters, but really seems to keep the spam down on other sites.
