Venomfire come in to effect even if they pass the poison dc?

Just curious, does the venomfire spell still do its caustic damage even if the subject passes the dc save for the poison, or only if they fail?

The way I read it it comes into effect when the poison weapon deals damage. So fail or pass the poison save, you're still taking acid damage.
