I know that in one of the books (3.5, I'm sure, but I could be wrong) there are two illustrations that point out what darkvision is supposed to look like. On the left page, it gives the colour image of a creature. On the right page, it shows the black & white outline image of the same creature.

For the life of me, I can't find which book this is in. Anyone know?

I am like 80% sure that's from a 2e book.

I'm 100% sure it's in a 3.x book. It's been over 10 years since I last saw a 2e book, so it's not that.

I am, however, 80% sure it's 3.0 book

I do not know the images you are referring to, but Darkvision is very well defined.

Darkvision is Black-and-White vision out to the stated distance. It is not affected by the amount of illumination available at other distances (so you don't lose darkvision just because a light went on briefly).

I can see no reason why it would be the outline of a creature - you see the creature, just in black and white.

It's a duplicate picture of a Mind Flayer. One in color, one in B&W

I'm pretty sure 2nd edition didn't have darkvision. It still had infravision, which saw varying degrees of heat.

I'm 90% sure that you have a 50% chance of being mistaken.

I'm 100% sure that I've never seen that picture and that 0% of the time we try to figure out exactly what dark vision IS we cant.

I remember back in 2e it was just heat vision. So much simpler to comprehend.

Every time we try to apply dark vision with darkness spell it gets wonky.

To be fair, the Darkness spell can be used to make things brighter in 3.5.
