The Lords of Sleeping Beauty OOC (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?368285-The-Lords-of-Sleeping-Beauty-OOC)

From your terraced tower the view was magnificent as you watched the core of the kingdom crumble. The castle, a small lump of rock, mortar, and steel on the horizon is swiftly consumed by monstrous vines. For all the swirls of dimly lit mists and in the distance however, it was much less impressive then you'd thought it would be. the kingdom itself failed to crumble in that instant, nor did the land split or the sky fall from above. It was... normal... but what would you do now?

Their royal family's castle was engulfed, but for the people of Eska the first days went like any others. Ama Wyn poured her subject's energies into tending and harvesting the forest with relentless care. She deemed the thoughts of her subjects best employed on their duties until the inevitable panic of the realm cooled. Her own thoughts turned to her neighbors, who she suspected to be of quicker temperament than herself. She would soon see what natures prevailed upon them and until then ready herself for the worst.

Although Kalrus saw the signs of the capital being engulfed by the curse, the edges of large vines spearing the sky and the dark mists that engulfed it, he was unable to view the destruction directly because of the distance. But bad news flies on the crow's wing they say, and rumors of what had transpired were already circling through his small settlement. Yet the youthful lord, whom was leaning against the northern railing of his hall to gaze upon the chaos of the curse, could only smile when the rumors in the air floated to his ears. For to him, the oppressive reign of the king that had come to a abrupt end was a signal. A signal of freedom, that no longer was he bound to give up a portion of his taxes to the king every season, that no longer could he have not more than a small militia or settlement out of fear of a swift and brutal punishment, no more did he have to broker for favor with stronger lords just to keep his lands.

"Talgon, send out men to recruit builders and architects. Tell the guards to keep order in the village at all cost. We must expand quickly, for this signal will be different for every lord in the realm." Kalrus tells his single court member who was watching the rising vines with a confused expression on his face. Talgon hesitantly asks in a confused tone, "Wha' signal, m'lord?"
"The signal of change, Talgon, of change. What change though will be left for those that grasp it." The lord replies as he leans off the railing before turning and heading back into his hall.

Alonzo surveys his forest and his people, with the reclaimation of the castle by the thorny vines, his people have restlessly waiting for a sign of change. Since the curse took ahold of the land, they seek the answers in nature that they cannot seem to find, so it falls to him to protect those most dear to him, and find the answers that he and they all seek, where ever they may lie.

Word came last to the northern border, where the young baron stood vigil at the bedside of his dying seneschal.

"This is ill news, indeed" the old man whispered. "The king kept the other lords in order. Without his strong hand, many may see this as a time to expand, whether to claim the kingdom for themselves or at least a larger part of it. There will be war.

"Have a care. The People will need you. Break the curse, if you can; bring back the king, but protect the People at all cost." With this final counsel, the steward breathed his last, and the baron, already bereft of his parents, felt truly alone.

"Summon me riders," he told the servant standing near, "and tell the People there will be a proclamation: the People must prepare to move."

Summer found Eska in good form. The uncertainty spurring them towards greater efforts rather than lesser. Wyn however was the sort to be eternally dissatisfied and set off on her own to speed the harmony and progress of her realm.

The People are on the move, seeking to bring order in their rugged country. While camp guards and overseers watch over their two small encampments and families are selected to settle yet a third, the Baron takes the Baronial Guard to explore new territory for future settlement.
Baron and Baronial Guard move to hex 5.5 to explore. What could possibly go wrong?

As the heat of summer begins once more to fade, disturbing news has come your ears in the past few months, all in bits and pieces, but you're able to put most of it together now. Lord Grancies the Heroic (Hex 44) has been sending pleas for help, claiming that Lord Stone (Hex 56) has violated their ancient treaty and declared war upon the lordship of Pinesridge.

While both nations are on the other side of the kingdom you know some things of each

Lord Grancies of Pinesridge

Priding himself for having never used militant force to control his citizens, Grancies is loved by his people. His great grandfather was a holy man who earned his line the right to bear the crown in the ceremony for crowning kings. You know his lands to be bountiful fields upon which they raise horses, brilliant white steeds the like of which can be found nowhere else in the realm.

Lord Stone of the Crispen Lands. Former lord of Highpoint Reach

Lord stone however remains infinitely more famous then Lord Grancies. Lord Stone was a broad stocky man with sharp determined eyes with a scar running along his jawline. Three years gone Lord Stone was the most powerful lord in all the lands. Lord stone looked down on the whole of the kingdom from his mighty fortress, Highpoint Reach (Hex 57). Just beneath the fortress was a prosperous city larger then any other.

Lord Stone had always been a man who valued control and spoke little. He had armies combing the subterranean streets, and more still up above in his fortress ready should any nation displease him. When his son fell in love with Lord Grancies' daughter, he offered an exchange of guests, his youngest for Lord Grancies' daughter, the oldest and strongest treaty of peace a nation could offer, and Lord Grancies leaped at it. It was only so long afterwards that Lord Stone decided that he was ill content with his lands and wealth. So it was that he came to challenge the great dragon Jaldron at her cave. Eight hundred men Lord Stone had brought, and eight hundred men Jaldron slew. So great was her rage she left the king to watch as she flew out towards his fortress.

Her mighty wings blocked out the sky overhead as she fell upon the castle, hammering it with her claws, and blasting at it with her breath until the walls fell. She did not stop though, Any who stood were eaten, and who ran were crispened into cinders and ash. afterwards Lord stone rallied his people to gather in the planes below the mountain and turned towards rebuilding. Still today this defeat hangs over him, shaming him, and spurring him to make his nation one far greater then Highpoint reach had ever been, some even say he's turned to the arts of necromancy and devil-worship to achieve this goal. It is thus that the holdings of Lord stone are now referred to as the "Crispen Lands"

And so Alonzo's tidings spread throughout the lands. None knew what exactly had transpired, but Alonzo had returned alone, covered in the filth of the road.

Some report a great shadow passing over the lands, obscuring the sun for miles about, others say it was a raging storm of lightening which tore trenches in the ground large enough to serve as mass graves, a sign of foreboding. Still more lie awake in their beds looking out their windows as if searching for a great horned monster of shimmering green which they claim would one day devour the world.

With the coming of spring the snows melt once more opening up the roads, yet with the loss of the king and rumors of infighting between the lords, banditry has shot up throughout the kingdom, groups of orcs and goblins, the lesser races that the kingdom normally wiped out each year surged forward, assured of their supremacy and right to reign over the weak farmers of the land. Reports have also reached you of a more tame group of goblins who run a traveling circus having lost several of their animals when someone left the cages open overnight.
