View Full Version : trying to help out a fellow player with a noncombat chatacter

A fellow player that I've played with for 10 years, has made a fluff kind of character that is strong with skill use (like a rogue) but limited in combat . He can poke at range for small amounts of damage and likewise in melee . This usually works great coupled with a grease spell. He uses a whip for trip, disarm, and climbing/swinging. He has a few low level utility spells the strongest of which is dispel magic. (Which saved our butts last encounter) His class is a homebrew one that has the class ability to reroll a bad die roll x times per day. After a few encounters, he has found that even DR/5 shuts down his damage dealing potential since he only does 1d6+2.

He has a good UMD skill so we were gravitating towards that as a possibility. We are only level 6 and wealth is a little scarce so that's an issue. He is an arcane caster so he could use an eternal wand.
The best I can think of for him would be a wand of power word pain either regular or eternal for a low 750gp or 820gp respectively.

Any other ideas for him to have more of a presence in combat? In the party we have some good BFC already and dedicated illusionist, a melee cleric (not optimized) that uses an ACF that gives her animal like alternate forms rather than using domains, and a halfling outrider. We don't really have a damage sponge character so our tactics are to lay down some BFC (usually grease and/or glitterdust and some illusions and take down the enemies one at a time before the durations expire. So having him able to contribute against DR would help out.

Inevitability

If he's an arcane spellcaster, the Extra Spell (Complete Arcane) or Arcane Disciple (Complete Divine) feats may give him some nice combat spells.

The way his class is set up, he has a list of spells known and casts spontaneously. He can only cast 1 spell per day from each level. So he's not a blaster by any means. Very limited casting. Just enough to qualify as an arcane caster. Thanks though.
