I may be playing a 5e campaign with some newbies (from never played to never played properly) and will be assisting the DM a lot but not DMing myself. I'm a hardened 3e player and because I'm the most experienced by far have started a discussion about if I should just teach them 3e.

As for hardwear, one of the players has a 5e starter kit complete with the three vital books. We don't have any 3e books (but that may change). PDFs, and a couple reference sites are what will be used most likely.

What do you all think; should I learn 5e (something I'm starting to research today) and teach that, at risk of a bit of confusion on my side. Should we just go with 3e instead?

And the big question I'm looking to an answer, how does 3e compair to 5e? What are the major differences, advantages, and disadvantages? What are some good sources to research with? I'm finding it easy to find comparison between adjacent editions but a generation gap is a bit awkward, as I know little 4.0 (and don't like it from what I know).

These are popular questions! I recommend these three threads:

Worth It (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?367762-Worth-it)
Looking for opinions before I dive in (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?368332-Looking-for-opinions-before-I-dive-in)
Would a 5e game be a better way to go back to basics than core only 3.5 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?366720-Would-a-5e-game-be-a-better-way-to-go-quot-back-to-basics-quot-than-core-only-3-5)

Short answer, the consensus is try it out! It's pretty great.

I recommend giving 5E a shot. Worse comes to worse, you go back to playing 3.X.

5E's mechanics draw from 3.X and 4E, but its sensibility actually comes from 2E's "theater of the mind" play style.

If you'd like to dip your toe into into 5E without spending any money, here are the basic rules for 5E in downloadable .PDF format. (http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules)

Good luck!
