Red Hand of Doom.

Doom.

Doom.

The letter from the burgomaster arrived blood stained but it wasn't intended for you. The messenger was dead in the saddle but had managed to lash himself to his horse before he was too weak to hold on. Fleeing whatever fight had pierced her riders side the horse followed the familiar road out of the Vale, herself kept alive by look and the favor of whichever god or goddess watches over fools and desperate men.

The horse greeted your own just as you were breaking camp, yourselves having arrived in the outskirts of the Vale proper just the night before. The merchant you were guarding on the western road took one look at the letter and its dozen equally blood soaked brothers and offered double pay to escort him back the way you came. Three swordsmen and a fearful priest took him up on the offer and left before the cook fire had cooled, the priest offering a hasty blessing and the merchant both promises to carry the letter to the nearest Keep and curses at your damn fool heads.

- - -

A Call to Arms! Brothers and Sisters of Peace, Nobles and Common Folk, All Defenders of the Realm, Harken!

The Horde has arisen in the Wyrmsmoke Mountains aside Elsir Vale. Uncounted numbers of blood crazy goblinoids and their tyrannical Wyrm overlords gather a Doom that will consume the Realm in fire and pain. These are no mere reports of drunk farmers, I have seen the waiting Horde with my own eyes and they stretch from Peak to Peak!

Send all Brave Peoples to our defense and together we can stop the Horde before they raze the Vale and escape its confines to burn the Realm. With Haste there is victory. With delay, there is only death.

Signed,
Burgomaster Jarmaath, Lord of Brindol Keep

- - -

Whether for private reason of vengeance or oaths of protection of the innocent and the wild you gathered your courage and took the road east while the merchant rode west. The road is well traveled and well kept and a hard ride brought you along the banks of the Elsir River as it paced the road. The wasteland over the plains to the south keeps the roadside clear of dwellings but as you followed the river closer inside the Vale you saw the beginnings of civilization. Farms and mills are sparse along the river and each you pass is either deserted, razed, or both. Signs of bloody battle are clear at each one though no bodies remain, only scuffles in the dirt and pools of blood, some still drying.

The sun is beating out the last rays of afternoon as the woods begin to reclaim the farmland along the road, the high spires and peaks of the Wyrmsmoke Mountains raising above and behind you.

Warwick, Human Ranger

Warwick turned in the saddle and looked over his shoulder, Cowards, he thought towards the remnants of the caravan fleeing from the battles to come. How do you win glory to your name when you flee? What woman would want the children of such a man? Pushing his dark red hair from his face, he looked in turn at each of those riding around him that chose not to flee and smiled behind his beard, for these people knew what it was to live! A life huddled behind stone walls for fear of the world is no life worth living.

He sighed then, looking at the signs of battle around him. Might not be anything left to fight. Bending forward he rubbed Fleet's neck reassuringly, she was no war trained steed as were some of the mounts his companions rode, but she'd been with him long enough on hunts and dragging kills that she wouldn't shy at the smell of blood.

"Are we too late?" he asks quietly to those riding near him.

Gazing at the aftermath of battle along their path, Warwick stopped and dismounted briefly at a couple of battle sites, checking for signs or tracks that might hint at what was doing battle here, before mounting and riding forward to the others. No bodies, and that worried him because they were either coming up behind an organised army that's carting away the dead, or worse, whatever is beating back the defenders is eating the dead as they go.

West of Drellin's Ferry

The signs of the battles read like open pages of a book to Warwicks trained eye. Unlike most stories, the same tale was told over and over again. The attackers crept through the woodline in a number of groups, the smallest a pair, the largest a dozen. When no quarry was in the yard they surrounded the house or barn and stormed in to find them at dinner, rest, or work. While the fighters with booted feet spilled blood, smaller goblin feet rushed from the trees and ransacked the houses, leaving with more weight than they came in. Other groups of goblins went to the pen but instead of killing the animals they bound them and led them away. Hounds raced through the woods bringing down those that try to flee.

When all were slain or captured the attackers gathered up the dead and led the slaves (who carried the corpses) away back into the woods. All the trails lead to the river and once on the other side head straight into the foothills of the Wyrmsmoke Mountains. Nearly all the blood spilled is red, except for one farm. Two large pools of greenish black blood lay on the ground in front of the burned house. From it's sight and smell, Warwick knows the name of these foes: Hobgoblins.

Astar Stonehold - Dwarf Paladin

Astar looks at the grim testament to war around him. It reminds him of Ynrol after the raiders hit it, but those raiders had been human, or mostly so. These were goblins. From what he had heard, they were nastier to the prisoners they captured. To the dead, too. He did not like the fact that they were carrying the dead off. There were a number of things goblins could do to enemy dead, none of them good.

He looks at his companions. They were hard people, every one of them. If it came to fighting, he had no doubt that they were capable. And he had no doubt that there would be fighting.

"How far do you think it is to Brindol Keep?" Astar asks. "I suspect we may need to take shelter somewhere else tonight."

"A vanguard of naught but cowards and brigands, preying on the defenseless." Sneers an opulent looking half-elf, as his eyes pan across the varied scenes of devastation. The contempt souring his features is matched only by the resplendent finery of his clothes, costly even to an untrained eye, an artfully wrought ensemble comprised of fine silks, dyed in black, gold and crimson. As though voicing agreement, a jet raven perched upon his shoulder offers an indignant sounding caw, evidently well domesticated as it displays none of the skittishness characteristic of a bird of its kind, even among those retained as pets. Its head moves about in a strangely calm, measured way, as though likewise assessing the damage wrought.

As Warwick's query reaches his ears, Garathos turns to regard the man, responding by way of a dour nod. "It would seem that way. Too late perhaps to save these innocents, but certainly not to avenge them." Looking off towards the east, eyes flitting between the worn path and dense woods, the nobleman's face bears a frown of naked concern, clearly perturbed by something.

"I must admit, the idea of staying upon this trail in plain sight fills me with apprehension... should these transgressors lurk, or encroach upon us from the foliage, our situation would be precarious indeed."

He looks towards the bird couched on his robes, inclining his head at the animal; a testament to its superb training, it appears to echo its owner's gesture with a reciprocating crook of its beak.

"Perhaps it would be wise to send forth my companion here, that he might gauge what lies ahead?"

Garathos' eyes again trace the tree line, replete with worry.

"Beyond that, do you feel we might make our way through the woods?"

Warwick, Human Ranger

"Hobgoblins!" he curses in his soft voice, emphasizing his disgust by spitting to the side. This was no battle, but a slaughter. Which was typical of the goblinkin, cowards all unless they possessed the greater numbers needed to overwhelm their foes.
Warwick looked up towards the sky marking the fading sunlight and then to the trees on the edge of the forest. Turning to the dwarf he shakes his head slowly not knowing the answers while thinking carefully on the risks of tramping through the tree's in the dark "Not all were slain. Prisoners. Marched off towards the trees," he gestures off to the side "They should leave a clear path. But we are losing light."

He nods then at the half-breeds suggestion. "Aye, send forth your bird. Much time will be saved if she spots any cook fires from the sky. Your magicks let you commune with it yes?"

Satheris (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=18055), Clan of the Flowing Water
Satheris rides with the group, quiet as always. Since he did not grasp the common tongue as those that had lived among it for many years did, Satheris tended to stay quiet. Instead he did what his training had taught him to do...just listen. By just listening, Satheris had picked up enough of the common tongue to be able to communicate with people, but he was still self conscious of his lack of grammar.

Satheris thought nothing of it when the others left, continuing with his group on the mission at hand. When they reached the site of the battle, Satheris' face grows dire and he is immediately put on edge. He pulls out his bow and knocks an arrow, eyes sharp and keeping a watchful eye in case and stragglers have stayed.

As soon as he hears "Hobgolbins" he spits on the ground and makes a somewhat growling sound, <"Hobgoblins......awful, disgusting creatures that have no business living. Naught but cowards and thieves....we shall put them down like the rabid dogs they are, hopefully giving some people to those that lost their lives here."> Of course, those that do not know elven don't catch any of that. Satheris then realizes his slip up and sighs at himself. "Hobgoblins is disgusting. We kill them and revenge these people." Quickly shutting up, Satheris goes back to searching the wooded area next to them, riding up to Garathos, <"We should get off the road while your little companion scouts ahead. Who knows how many of those vile creatures still lurk about. And while one isn't a problem, hundreds would make for a very bad night."> Satheris tended to like Garathos and usually used him to speak to in elven. Satheris had no qualms with half-elves, even though he grew up exclusively around evles, and tended to take Garathos for who he was, as opposed to what he was. Satheris had heard, now that he was out in the world, about elves not wanting to have anything to do with what they called "half-breeds". He never understood this mentality, but he guesses that there is evil of all sorts out there.

Garathos grants an acknowledging nod as he takes in both Sathris and Warwick's opines and observations.

"Hobgoblins? It would seem to fit the crime; such base creatures have no qualms about preying upon innocent farmers and civilians. Beyond that, perhaps more concerning than the nature of our apparent foe, there isn't a corpse in sight; if they made off with these, I fear the worst; do they intend to bolster their ranks with necromancy?"

At Warwick's caution of the setting sun, the half-breed looks towards the sky's far off panorama as though to confirm what is already apparent.

"If safer travel through the woods might impede us, it is a small price to pay for our safety. Fear not about the dying of the light friend, for me and my pet have been gifted vision of unusual acuity; the night will impede us no more than the mid-day sun; more than might be said about our apparent foes. Darkness shall be our ally."

When the woodsman presupposes the noble's capabilities, he responds with a magnificent grin.

"As to your query, I indeed possess the ability to communicate at range with Kaeravak; astutely observed! Though, I am able to do one better."

Gesturing at his shoulder mount, an esoteric motion of his fingers sees it disappear from view entirely!

"Quite a useful trick. I expect it will be particularly handy in our journey to come."

When he sees Sathris canvas the area for signs of a lingering foe, Garathos is likewise inspired into action, head panning about the perimeter of trees and savaged farmsteads.

<"Very wise of you Sathris, it would indeed be prudent to assure the safety of our position. You have my complements.">

He smiles at those who seem unfamiliar with the racial tongue, picking out any looks of befuddlement.

"Ah, please pardon my Elvish; my friend here thinks it best we sweep the area for threats before we head into the woods; I couldn't agree more."

Hamza remained silent. There was nothing in the world she hated more than hobgoblins. Wherever the group had gone, Hamza had half a mind to track them down and kill every last one. Thankfully, it appeared she wasn't the only one with that idea. When the half-elf offered to scan the area ahead, Hamza nodded in agreement.

"An invisible pair of eyes will prove handy," she remarked, "We should move quickly, though, in case they plan to meet up with a larger group. We haven't time to waste."

The raven flaps it's invisible wings and glides through the air, skimming the tree tops as you all leave the road and make your way through the light brush in the woodline. The horses don't appreciate the change in route and Windhunter in particular is vocal with his displeasure, snorting, stamping and giving Astar a hard time just for the sake of being obstinate. The raven is much quieter as it flies above the trees and goes on ahead.

<< There's a house on the other side of the hill you're approaching. Nothing in the woods around it, looks deserted. >> Pause. << I'm up on the roof. Nothing to see. >>

The road turns away from the Mountains and then crests a small rise and descends into a dusty grove in a large, shallow dell. Through the woods you can see the outlines of a crumbling farm house; beyond it the road winds back north east and squinting you can almost see a small something on the river that might be Drellin's Ferry. Something more immediate catches Hamza's attention as she steps into a footprint in the mushy ground, the same booted print that was at all the razed farms. Knowing what to look for now she finds half a dozen more in the woods, all leading downhill towards the farm house. The sun sinks down a little lower and she catches a brief flash of metal somewhere in the woods between the top of the hill and the farmhouse, undoubtly the glint of sun on mail.

Here's a map (https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/18DfrC1JomAXtee9GDmcKBa7HcG_CxtRRkhEtZrdsgNY/edit?usp=sharing). The PC's (minus Kaervak) are not on the map at the moment; you all are just on the top of the hill, represented on the map by the blue circle at the top. That's not an official starting box or anything, you can spread out in a line, bunched up, whatever. That's just your relation to the map.

Kaervak didn't see anything on his way in and is perched on the top of the abandoned farmhouse.

"Let me get prepped and lay down some fire, then you two can barrel in."

The noble makes several hushed incantations as a polished obsidian crystal clasped about his neck 'glows' with peculiar black luminescence, exuding pulses of darkness that flare with each syllable. When his chant concludes, he quickly maneuvers one hand to draw a silken pouch about it.

"Back away if you value your sight... this spell will engulf everything about me in an impenetrable dark the moment I withdraw my pouch."

Perched on the roof, the raven has a birds eye view of the chaos in the farmhouse below. Half a dozen Hobgoblins are scrambling around trying to hastily don whatever armor they can grab and line up in a defensive formation at the same time. Spears, shields, swords and maces are picked up then dropped then picked up again as a taller Hobgoblin dressed in fine chainmail bellows orders at them. The surprised panic of the soldiers quickly gives way to a somewhat ordered chaos as the sergeant manages to line them up in front of the door, the first rank holding tight to their shields while the second rank readies longspears. A hobgoblin against the back wall readies a crossbow, the tip of the quarrel trained at the closed door.

Apart from the hustle of the soldiers stands another Hobgoblin, this one dressed in hardened leather. Though he carries himself with the same discipline that all soldiers do his bearing is calm. His eyes are half shut as he reaches into a pouch at his side and pulls out a loose mixture of darkened dirt and throws it over the sergeant, his voice low as he recites some ritual in the goblinoid tongue.

"A little bird tells me there's eight of them holed up in there. All are mounted up on the door, ready to attack anyone who comes through. First rank has shields and swords, the second, longspears. One has a crossbow. Leader's wearing quality chainmail. There's also a caster in hardened leather; not sure what kind, but he imbued 'Zarr' with some kind of enchantment."

Regarding his implement, the warlock twiddles the shard of smooth obsidian with an absent minded gesture, dull crimson flaring up where his fingers touch, a frown articulating discouragement at the obstacle between him and his foes. He then moves forward, gaze sweeping across the homestead as though in search of some vulnerability. It isn't long before his sharp eyes find their quarry, settling upon the contours of a hobgoblin. Thrusting his crystal forth, two further rays of dark flame scream out from its depths, one tracing a precise trajectory through the trees and window to hit its mark while the other narrowly misses by inches, scalding the wall beside its intended target with a caustic hiss.

When she got closer, she began to call out to the hobgoblins. "I will rip you all into pieces so small even your mothers won't recognise you! Stay inside and die, come out and die. Either suits me fine, but I will get to you Azarr. No amount of stone will stop me - if you had any balls, you'd come out and face me yourself!"

Satheris (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=18055), Clan of the Flowing Water
Satheris hears that the goblins are hold up in the house and starts moving that way. As he approaches he looks at the house and weighs his options. On the north end of the house he sees a hole in the roof that might suit him well to use his bow and pick them off from above, so he goes for it. He moves through the forest with uncanny speed and before anyone knows it, he is up on the roof. He pulls out his longbow, knocks an arrow, and shoots at the first goblin he sees, smiling.

The Hobgoblin shouts out in surprise as twin bolts of arcane energy flies through the broken shutter. He manages to dodge the first but the second slams into him, knocking him off his balance just in time to avoid by chance the two arrows fired by the elf that appeared out of nowhere on the roof. "Azarr will feast on the marrow from your bones!" The Sergeant shouts through the walls in a heavily accented trade tongue. Satheris can see the Sergeant turn to look at the priest and shrug, then turn his gaze up towards the elf.

The muscle bound hobgoblin shouts at the injured one and the soldier backs away from the window and grabs something off a hook on the wall. As he fiddles with it the Sergeant takes a dagger from his belt and flings it towards Satheris, shouting at the soldier. The soldier leans back and throws it and as it's coming towards him Satheris realizes it's a net. A simple sidestep and the dagger flies past Satheris while the net gets caught up in the hole in the roof. The Sergeant scowls at the elf. The priest, just outside of Satheris's view through the hole, begins some new chant.

Satheris is missed by the dagger and net. What a lucky elf.

Satheris:

Deftly avoiding both attacks, Satheris counters with two arrows at the injured hobgoblin before following up with his superior, keen for the kill. Then, adequately menaced by those close calls from his perch upon the roof, he concludes that his initial plan was probably more risk than reward as he gracefully tumbles to the ground.

Garathos & Kaeravak:

While Satheris moves to (relative) safety, the ominous storm of dark draws inexorably closer through the woods. Two more hissing tendrils lance across the narrowing distance to instantly perforate the crossbow wielder, each blasting inch wide holes in his chain. The first is comparatively innocuous and superficial, puncturing the shoulder of its intended target. The second however proves a terminal hit, tearing organs with a violent gout of blood.

Dismissing the aura of dark about himself, Garathos casually approaches the subdued hobgoblins, face wearing the vague semblance of a smile. Perhaps it was justified; the assault had gone exceedingly well, free of even the merest casualty. Pausing momentarily, the noble decides to allow Satheris to 'assert' himself before interposing.

"Please excuse my friend; since witnessing the devastation wrought upon these lands he has been understandably eager to met out some manner of ah..."

He lapses into a brief contemplative silence as though in search of an appropriate descriptor, though it's unclear whether this is done for dramatic effect or out of legitimate deliberation.

"...justice, put charitably. That having been said, I believe we can arrive at a mutually beneficial outcome that won't involve hours of arduous torture. Should you and your superior cooperate, I have no doubt I can pull some strings to arrive at an acceptable accommodation on your behalf; I am a man of not inconsiderable influence in these parts after all."

You can't stop Azarr Kul, you're already standing in the new Land of the Dragon and you don't even know it!" He says with a smirk, then frowns and shuts his mouth.

Warwick pauses as he was stripping off the armor of one of the hobgoblins and looks quizzically towards the hobgoblin sergeant to see if it was joking. It thinks we're soldiers, he figured and chuckles softly to himself while he goes through the pockets of the body he was crouched over, before grabbing it under the arms and dragging it outside to deposit in the woods with the rest of the bodies. "The rules of war bind us no more than they do the angry commoners whose lives you've laid to ruin; the same we each represent in our own ways."

Garathos looks about at his gathered peers.

"That said, at the risk of sounding cliche, there are two ways this interrogation can go. Let me assure you that any resistance, though worthy of admiration, is misplaced and ultimately futile; every being has its breaking point and my fellows have no qualms with finding yours. Personally I would rather strive to provide each of you a pardon on the basis of cooperation than have you slowly and excruciatingly flayed and rent apart until we get what we need, but if we must, I suppose it's an alternative that will have to be..." His smile parts to a fiendish grin as he lowers his gaze at the officer. "...entertained."

His attentions then turn from the sergeant to his grunt, eye unblinking betraying a sublime, gleeful anticipation.

"As this squad's commanding officer, I understand you have a responsibility for the well-being of those under your command; I would urge you to not to abdicate that duty. Warwick finishes stripping the corpses and has made a tidy little pile in one corner of the room with all the salvaged gear while the half-elf continued his questioning, not that he had any use for most of the equipment. The arrows would be useful no doubt, and perhaps the weapons could be of use to arm the prisoners if they ever managed to find and free them, but a lot of the equipment was large and unwieldy and was likely to get caught on the vegetation if their trail took them back into the woods.

Bundling them together he decided that the longbows would be of use and he took all six of them and the quivers of arrows outside to fasten to his horse, unsure if those besides the mage and himself had any means of ranged combat he wanted to make sure that they'd be able to thin out any enemies before they got into melee if they found themselves in a good position. Walking back inside he picked up the packaged trail rations they'd found and took them back outside to divide between the group's mounts.

Garathos looks on impassively as the hobgoblin soldier is summarily executed, his hands crossed, expression betraying a casual indifference to the death of the creature; if any emotion might be gleaned, it would be a subtle hint of satisfaction creeping upon the corners of his lips. When the sergeant declares his unwillingness to cooperate however, his seeming neutrality quickly sours into a disapproving frown. Leaning forward off the roughly hewn stone, he moves to loom over the surviving officer, frame casting a foreboding shadow across his bound captive like a promise of suffering to come.

"Speak hobgoblin. Despite my companion's rash actions I meant my promise: cooperate and you will be spared undue punishment; do not and you will be made familiar with a _decisively_ unhappy alternative; for example:"

He abruptly thrusts his obsidian shard towards the slain warrior. As though beckoned forth a silent, spectral vestige of the goblinoid promptly coalesces and rises from its body. The blurred edges of the phantasmal being closest to Garathos' implement waver violently, form compressing and distorting towards the gleaming stone as though inexorably drawn into it. The phantom hobgoblin's flickering visage is drawn into a terrible, silent scream, transfixing the sergeant with pleading eyes, its face a mask of naked terror.

"I'd assured you torments beyond reckoning did I not? You presumed them physical; a fair assumption, and something I would most gladly partake of in spite of the reservations of those among us, but, as you can see, I had something a little more... permanent in mind."

His prior sadistic grin once again splays across the half elf's face, eyes glinting with macabre anticipation.

"If there's anything else of pertinence to disclose, you'd best tell me, and be truthful about it; otherwise, once I am done with your fallen, you shall be next."

The farmhouse is silent as you mount up and leave, the horses eager to be away from the scent of so much blood. Following the road east the small hill behind you is quickly covered up and in a few minutes the road splits east and north. A signpost points east and reads 'Drellin's Ferry, 80 miles' while another points north and reads 'Wyrmsmoke Mountains. Danger.' Taking the north fork you quickly reach the bridge over the Elsir River, a simple construction of stone and wood that appears well built but aged by the weather. Looking at the road ahead the hills quickly turn into rising mountain slopes, the peaks of the Wyrmsmoke towering in the distance.

The hard ground is packed dirt and the tracks of passage are easy to see, even in the light of dusk. Booted feet trod all over the area, though the heaviest are columns of tracks coming to and from the wood to the west. Among the boot marks are prints of bare feet and paw prints, the animal marks easier to see because of a light scorching on the ground in their prints. The trail into the woods looks like it follows a deer run, just wide enough for two people to squeeze by side by side while horses would be cramped on the trail.

As the party continues to treks through the wilderness, Garathos' discomfort is almost palpable and readily noted; the noble was almost a fish out of water, completely removed from his element, grimacing at each intermittent brush of leaves and coarse branches by the edge of the road, always seeking to keep to its centre. The half-elf's face bore a look somewhere between disgruntled frustration and cautious apprehension, as though not sure whether he were more agitated at the sergeant's intransigence in spite of his efforts than wary of the uncertain dangers ahead; either way, the unpleasant nature of his mood was borne clear on darkened features, doubtlessly compounded by his ongoing friction with the outdoors.

For its part, Garathos raven flew well in advance of the group, nimbly darting from tree to tree when it wasn't circling overhead, almost as if it were engaged in a kind of deliberate, methodical reconnaissance; either that or the bird had acquired some truly peculiar behaviours.

Then came Warwick's query on the matter; seeming to lack an immediate answer, Garathos could only offer a shrug before making a vague gesture at his corvid vanguard, almost as if to provoke some manner of reply from the creature.

Warwick sees through the dark with the eyes of a cat and nimbly picks his way through the underbrush, guiding the companions along the path. After a few minutes of careful hiking Satheris spots another hunter's blind in the trees, this one empty as well. When he sees a third one the sun has fallen completely over the horizon. The first quarter moon provides little illumination as it begins it's climb from the east, but two campfires are visible through the trees ahead.

Creeping closer, Warwick sees that this hunter's stand is not empty like the others. Some figure dressed in armor stands watch, bow strung and leaning against the railing. The campfires ahead are in a small clearing and the ranger can see a handful of figures standing, sitting, and talking by them. Their voices are snatched away by the bursts of wind but he hears enough to recognize the goblinoid tongue. The flames in the firepits leap as they're whipped by the wind, casting long hobgoblin shadows on some nearby tents, each large enough for a dozen men to stand in. Across from the campfires Warwick can see a wooden pen with a few huddled, shivering humans inside while a soldier stands guard nearby.

Moving quietly back to the group Warwick relays the layout of the camp in hand gestures and hushed words, pointing out the sentry in the hunter's stand up the ladder and mentioning the possibility of more hobgoblins sleeping in the tents.

If they could silence the sentry before they were noticed it would allow a couple of them to rain arrows into the camp from relative safety and for the rest of the party to get in closer to the prisoners before they acted, preventing the hobgoblins from using them as hostages. They could also throw the longbow's Warwick had tied to his mount, over into the cage for the prisoners to put to use.

But there was still the problem of the tents and how ever many hobgoblins they contained... but that couldn't be helped.

"Take the longbows and a quiver from my horse to throw to the prisoners," he says before turning to Satheris and gesturing for him to follow towards the sentry. "Wait for the sentry to fall," he instructs before pausing momentarily for any objections or suggestions.

Warwick - Human Ranger

"The sentry is right above the only places you might have a chance, but the light from the fire will most likely reveal anyone hiding in the tree's attempting to pry a hole in the pen," he says shaking his head, there was a spell he'd seen a druid use once that called up a thick fog, he was now wishing he'd taken the time to learn it as it would have been quite useful for masking their movement. He did know one spell that could possibly help them, but was saving it to throw off pursuit should those tents hold more than they could handle and they had to flee.

Having mused over his comrades ideas in silence, Garathos at last gives voice to his thoughts.

"Seems that the best way to proceed is to take out those tower sentries quick, quiet and simultaneously. To paraphrase my friend Astar: 'before they know what hit them'. A coordinated barrage of arrows and my bolts should do the trick; though they indeed contrast against the day, they are almost invisible against a backdrop of night. Just be careful to angle your shots such that they fall onto the platform. Once done, we can evacuate the prisoners, then mop up the camp remnants. If necessary, I can shelter our charges with a cover of darkness."

Looking out over the camp, the noble attempts to ascertain any other pertinent details of note. At a gesture, his raven vanishes into the night,

"Permit my friend a couple of minutes to scout the area; he may just catch something we haven't. Remember, we still need insight on their disposition of forces, plans and movements; capture anyone who might be of rank; it is important we learn where and when to best focus our efforts."

Kaeravak will move into heavy foliage then become invisible, scouting out the camp perimeter. He will then land, transform into a spider and investigate the interior of the tents before returning, polymorphing back into a raven and revealing himself.

Hobgoblin Warcamp

The ravens flight around the camp is uninterrupted by shout or arrow, though the winds buffet it something fierce. Staying out of the bright light of the fires, the bird doesn't see any other towers or hobgoblins hiding in the trees, nor obvious traps or hindrances on the ground. Dropping down to the tents and shifting form, the spider crawls through a small tear in the first tent. Inside are three hobgoblin soldiers playing some dice game, their heavier arms and armor laid to the side in favor of more comfortable leathers and heavy blankets. Though the spider doesn't speak the hobgoblin tongue, it's clear that one of them is losing pretty badly and the other two are making sport of him.

The inside of the other tent is as sparely decorated as the other one, but the two hobgoblins inside are soldiers of rank evidenced by their higher quality clothes, arms, and armor, as well as the few maps spread out on the rough camp table between them. The older hobgoblin appears to be in charge of the conversation, pointing to different places on the map and glaring at the younger soldier across from him. The elder hobgoblin has a pair of short tusks jutting from his mouth and faintly glimmering scales on his neck and throat; the younger carries no such distinction aside from the highly polished half-plate armor he wears.

The raven returns and tells Garathos the above.

Warwick

Knowledge Check (Hobgoblins)
Hobgoblin warband procedures follow closely to regular military orders. Soldiers in a combat zone are kept on a constant level of low alert and are required to be ready to fight at a moments notice. This means that personal weapons are kept within arms reach at all times, if not already worn on their body, and that they wear a minimum amount of body armor while not on duty, typically some version of light armor.

It isn't long before Garathos' raven makes a quick and abrupt return, seeming to almost materialize from the dark. The avian creature curiously pivots its head and issues a set of subdued caws that seem to be suffuse with meaning, its master looking on with interest.

"Three hobgoblins in the far tent, two officers in the other. The former are distracted with some manner of dice game, the latter seem to be discussing strategy; several points on a map were indicated."

Turning to look out over the camp once more, the warlock angles his body against the buffeting winds, evidently doing his best to minimize the chill while retaining a useful vantage.

"Gusts are especially strong tonight; enough to impede arrow fire. Though they will have no effect on my sorceries, they may well stifle our bows. I'll take out the hobgoblin in the southern lookout at range; hopefully one of you can close on the other and put it down without raising the alarm. Anything else?"

Warwick listens intently to the new information and after hearing Garathos' plan to take out the southern sentry, turns to Satheris, <"Shoot whichever one is still alive when we go,"> he says altering the plan slightly. "Wait for me to get into position, then let loose. With luck the other hobgoblins wont notice anything and we'll be able to move into a better position."

Moving silently to the base of the sentry post, he starts to climb towards the platform, as he reaches the top he turns back towards the group and nods to Garathos and Satheris before throwing himself up over the edge and drawing his rapiers to quickly silence his sentry. His blades swiftly and effectively stabbing into the creatures vitals, he catches the body before it could drop and props it into a sitting position against the railing facing away from the fires.

Acting on cue, Garathos glowers at the lone sentry in the tower, spitting a nearly inaudible epithet. He then bids his familiar off to the southern tower before stalking off towards the west side of the camp, circling about the tower while he moves within the treeline and foliage, keeping low to the ground, meticulously avoiding any illumination cast by the camp. The half-elf's motions are slow, careful and deliberate, painstakingly avoiding any twigs and detritus that might betray them.

Taking up a position within a set of dense brush, he waits for Satheris to move into position before reciting a whispered incantation, firing off twin bolts from his obsidian shard. Garathos' projectiles strike true, cleanly penetrating the creature's armour to fell it in a silent instant.

Warwick jumps slightly as the Hobgoblins at the fires turn to see the southern sentry fall dead, it was time to save the prisoners. Still crouched hidden atop the northern sentry post, Warwick picks up the dead Hobgoblins longbow and whispering the words of a spell quickly marks one of the tougher hobgoblins near the fire with his magic. Then finding the calm needed to make the shot he breathed out steadily releasing the arrows towards their target.

Satheris rushes in an catches one of the soldiers off-guard while Warwicks arrows find their mark in a sergeant by the fire. As the hobgoblin snaps off the arrow shaft and rises to his feet, his shout of warning is cut off by the exploding bolt of lightning that erupts right next to him. His lifeless body slumps down and lands partway in the fire.

The hobgoblins in the camp scramble to their feet, grabbing at whatever weapon is nearby while a deep voice shouts from within a tent, bellowing a wordless warcry. Hobgoblin Warcamp

Darkness and lightning descend on the hobgoblins, blinding and blasting them in equal measure. Caught by surprise, half a dozen hobgoblin corpses lie on the ground, dead before they could manage a counter-attack. The thunderclaps from the lightning punctuate the howling wind like godly drum beats over a screeching symphony and the panicked shouts from within the tents are lost in the noise. Three hobgoblins rush out of the far tent clutching whatever hand weapon was nearby and stop when they see the globe of darkness over part of the camp. One of them motions to the others and clasps his hands together in front of this chest, then nods towards the darkness. The others hustle over to the edge of the darkness and stand side by side, then slowly advance into it, weapons held at the ready. Though stumbling through the darkness, they manage to hold their line as they run into the hobgoblin stranded inside, adjusting their line south and shouting in surprise when they bump into Garathos and Warwick. They grab the shoulders of those next to them and twist them to face the direction of your companions, and then blades lash out in the darkness, trying to find their targets.

Seeing the globe of darkness through the rents torns in the tent by the lightning, the two hobgoblins emerge from the back of the tent. The elder hobgoblin with short tusks quickly scans the battlefield and focuses on Astar, then taps the soldier of the sergeant next to him and the both of them advance on the dwarf. The sergeant swirls his heavy blade around as he approaches and then launches two massive swings at the dwarf, while the commander stands nearby and lifts his long blade into the air. He shouts something in draconic that sounds like a both a prayer and a curse and then fire erupts from his mouth as he breathes a cone of liquid flame at Astar's face. The cone expands behind the dwarf and catches Satheris, extending into the darkness as well to scorch unseen Warwick.

Hamza the Paladin & Lord Marsec the Druid

Taking advantage of the raven buffeting the hobgoblin Hamza blindsides him, delivering a massive strike with her greatsword that the hobgoblin casually sidesteps before sweeping the blade back at him as she reversed the stroke.

Meanwhile, still in the guise of a spider perched secure on a branch that was bobbing up and down the in the wind, Lord Marsec quietly watched the carnage unfold below him. From his vantage point he easily see's the two hobgoblins appear from the inky cloud of blackness as it moved away from them. Mentally calling out to the storm again he sends a bolt of lightning to strike at their feet.
