More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver's Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge, the Forge of Spells, where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby town of Phandalin prospered as well. But then disaster struck when the orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path.

A powerful force of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magical treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave. was lost.

For centuries, rumors of buried riches have attracted treasure seekers and opportunists to the area around Phandalin, but no one has ever succeeded in locating the lost mine. In recent years, people have resettled the area. Phandalin is now a rough-and-tumble frontier town.

Neverwinter : The Driftwood Tavern - Day 0

Each of you have received a letter from your friend and patron Gundren Rockseeker, scrawled quickly in his own hand on a mostly-clean bit of parchment and bearing the family crest:

Friend,

The gods have seen fit that my brothers and I should happen across quite the opporunity. In support of this endevor I shall be needing armed escort to see that a wagonload of neccessary supplies makes the journey to Phandalin safely. Meet me tonight, an hour after sundown, at the Driftwood Tavern and make ready to set out at dawn.

~Gundren

Roughly an hour after sundown you make your way through the winding city streets to a courtyard near the Coriol Street Gate. Squatting squarely on the corner of Coriol Street is a two story stone building that bears a swinging wooden sign in the shape of a three-masted galleon riding atop a banner emblazoned with the taverns name. Large barrels as tall as an adult human are stacked on either side of the main entry's stone stairs.

Once inside, you find Gundren at a long wooden table near the back. The dwarf is joined by his warrior companion who he introduces as Sildar Hallwinter, and soon you find that five others received letters identical to yours. He explains the task before you: He and his escort need leave immediately and make preparations in Phandalin. The six of you, he excitedly explains, will pick up a wagon full of supplies in the morning and escort it safely to Brarthen's Provisions for which you will be rewarded with ten gold pieces each.

"Now!" he chuckles and pats his companion on the back as he stands. "Enjoy your night and your meal. Get to know each other, you leave at first light. An associate will meet you outside this same in with the wagon tommorow and the pair of us shall meet you in Phandalin in three days’ time. If all goes according to plan there shall be more drinks to be had and more coin to be made. Ha!" Then the pair head outside and begin to saddle up into their ponies with haste, visible through the front windows of the tavern. Quickly, the pair heads out the city gate, leaving the six adventurers to wonder what the big opportunity might be and more importantly who each of their new companions was.

Torrin Yarjerit

The black-scaled dragonborn leans back comfortably in his chair. His greataxe and a set of javelins are leaning against the wall near him, and he has a pair of handaxes on his belt. He takes a gulp from his tankard of ale and looks around at his companions, sizing them up. As he scans across the table, his eyes linger for a moment on the tiefling, a small amount of acid flowing into his mouth in a tiny trickle, before he reminds himself that one's ancestry doesn't dictate their personality, with himself being a fair example.
"Name's Torinn. Live a fair bit away from here." Torinn shrugs after this. "Not much else to say about me."

Liuailo Galanodel

While Gundren was going over the details of the job, Liuailo nodded his head but did not speak. Every once in a while he was distracted by a glimpse of his newly acquired rapier. He'd purchased the fine blade from the coin he'd swindled off a dapper gentleman, now he'd just hoped to get out of town before the gullible noble came to his senses.

When Gundren left Liuailo sunk in his chair a little more and kept an eye on the door. When his meal was finally served, he tried to relax a little, but not too much. It was hard not to enjoy a hot meal and warm bed, especially when someone else's coin was paying for it, but he knew he couldn't afford to be to careless.

Well Torrin, a pleasure to be makin' yer acquantance." Liuailo thought about extending a hand towards the dragonborn, but something about him made Liualo stop. "If there ain't too much to say, then I'll not pry. I know there can be times when even giving a name is saying too much. How about the rest of you? Any good stories to share with a warm meal and good drink?"

Neverwinter : The Driftwood Tavern - Day 0

As the group begins to introduce themselves to each other a pair of waiters begin to set several plates of food along the center of the rectangular wooden table. Roasted mutton that has been carved into thick slices is piled high on two main platters and several smaller plates and bowels are laden with various vegtables. Boiled potatoes, steamed carrots, and beans waft small trails of steam into the air above them as the last platter, stacked with several small loaves of bread and ringed in small cubes of cheese, is placed in the center. Before each of you is placed a wooden tankard which is then filled with Dwarven Rockaxe Ale.

Aeron

"Aeron" the ranger says, taking small sips of his beer while his eyes scan the room, fixing on the door and windows. A moment or so passes in silence before he adds, "I like your necklace," raising his mug to Torinn, and gesturing to the necklace of humanoid ears around his own neck. "Seems we have similar taste, as it were."

Aeron sips some more of the beer, and it becomes apparent that he is not used to imbibing. Through his stubble, his cheeks turn a light shade of pink. He puts the mug down and reaches for a cube of cheese. After sampling it, he reaches for another cube and a roll, sliding the latter into his shirt. "For later, just in case." With that, he goes silent again, resuming his watch.

Sergor Bersk

He listened closely while Gundren talked - his father gave him enough raps on the head to make it a habit - but as the dwarves depart, Sergor resumes his slacked-jaw staring. Dumbfounded, his wide-eyed face turns back and forth between the dragon-born and the tiefling adventurers.

It is only when Torrin and the elf speak that Sergor remembers to mind his manners. Mumbling something to himself, he addresses the group:

"Well met! I am Sergor Bersk, and - ah, look at what Gundren has prepared for us!"

As the food and drink is being placed, he clasps his hands and silently mouths a prayer. Then he piles his plate high from as many dishes as he can reach, and sets to feasting.

Torinn

Noticing the one human seeming to gape openly at both himself and the tiefling, Torinn grimaces into his drink, as he downs the rest. Hopefully its just the fact that dragonborn are rare around here, and not that his ancestors were black dragons.
The large dragonborn sets down his empty tankard, and then eagerly drops several slices of mutton onto his plate, with only a small selection of vegetables to accompany them. Torinn takes a large bite out of one slice of mutton, when Aeron comments on his bear-tooth necklace.
Understanding well the desire to keep a trophy of one's accomplishments, Torinn nods and speaks around the mutton in his mouth, "In'eed, i' sheems we migh'."
He then grabs the full tankard of Rockaxe, and takes a drink to help wash down the meat, and makes a pleased noise. Its not often that Torinn gets to drink ale, or any alcohol for that matter, living as far away from others as he does.

Aeron

Chuckling as the fighter and barbarian devour their food, Aeron says, "Nothing like living for today, hmm?" and sips some more beer. It's obvious that the alcohol has the effect of loosening his tongue.

"Stories . . . I don't have many." Aeron takes a gulp. "Would you like to hear of the volcano that destroyed my village and my family or the undead horrors that have overrun its remains?" Pausing for a moment, Aeron sets his drink down again, frowning at the cup. He reaches over for another roll, breaking some off to eat. "Hmm, sorry. Maybe the story of how Gundren hired me?"

No larger than a child, a green-eyed, dark-haired gnome pokes his head over the table. His tunic is bright green with silver buttons; although he has taken it off now that the group is indoors, anyone who saw the gnome outdoors would have seen his magnificent, enormous, wide-brimmed hat. A rat dozes on the gnome's shoulder.

His large, sparkling eyes look to everyone in turn as they speak. He stands on the bench, bringing himself slightly closer to eye-level.
"Aeron, was it? A pleasure! Torinn, well met! Sergor, welcome! It's a delight to meet you all! I am Kayjat Rosendoofe Cobswobble Two-Sheds Exsprat Sproutfidget, but most people call me Keys."
He reaches for a few potatoes, and pops one whole in his mouth.
"*Gulp!* As you can see, I am a gnome! Some people think gnomes are related to potatoes, and that isn't far from the truth! I've always loved spuds, so that makes me something of a cannibal, in a sense. I pride myself on being a repository of pointless knowledge, so if you need any questions of little importance answered, I hope you will seek my counsel! I must say, I'm quite excited to get underway. Adventure! Excitement! Romance! Oh, what a story we shall spin together! Ha ha!"

The tiefling's smile grew wide at the mere mention of storytelling. "Oh, is it my turn? Can it be my turn? Great!

"I've got this one about six adventurers who all embarked on a doomed errand together. They were hired for what seemed at first like a simple escort, you know, just to make some quick coin. But they all turned up dead, drained of all their blood and viscera! See, they thought they were being hired by a completely legit employer, but he turned out to be a master vampire all along! Haha!"

She rolled back into her chair, giggling madly. Her dark eyes sparkled. "Just kidding," she crooned. "It's us!"

Despite her manner, there was something infectious in the little tiefling's voice. Maybe it was her lilting, singsong quality, or the odd innocence of her demeanor. Either way, she seemed to lack anything that could be called genuine malice, so at least there was that. "Call me Kit," she stammered, breathless, once she'd finally calmed down. "Everyone who's anyone calls me that."

Torinn

The dragonborn glances at the gnome over a particularly large piece of mutton as he rattles off his name, surprised that the small man is able to say the whole thing without needing to take a breath somewhere. "Keys it is then."

After the tiefling has finished laughing at her own strange, grim story, Torinn squints at her a little. "Seems you found that thought a little bit funny. Not sure I would in the same situation." He then shrugs a bit and goes back to eating, finally eating one of the potatoes he had grabbed earlier.

Keys stares wide-eyed as Kit finishes her story. After a beat of silence, he bursts out laughing.
"HA! Ha ha ha! Ah, I believe you and I shall get along famously, Kit! A pleasure to meet you! Let's hope the fates see fit to re-write your story's ending!"

Kit tilted her head oddly, pale hair spilling over one shoulder. It gave the distinct impression she was rolling her eyes at Torinn, and that would take some getting used to.

"Of course I found it funny. Because it is."

And then she was smiling again.

"Well met, Keys." She leaned in conspiratorially, but cast a furtive glance in Torinn's direction. "Try not to talk about vampires. Our dragonborn appears to be afraid of them."

Sergor Bersk

Sergor continues to eat and drink in silence, smiling for Keys's introduction. It is only when the tiefling regales the table with her story that he pauses. As pale as day, he sets aside his platter and makes a sign across his chest.

"Aeron, you were going to tell us how you were hired? Or maybe you could tell us about your trophies", nodding towards his necklace. "I'm all ears for how you got that", he says with a warming grin.

Draining the rest of his tankard, he attempts to wave down one of the waiters.

Neverwinter : The Driftwood Tavern - Day 0

As introductions are made, stories are told, and ale is drank the noises of the tavern around you begin to pick up as well. Now that the last bits of the days light begin to fade outside the citizen of Neverwinter arrive in small groups and begin to enjoy an otherwise ordinary night in their favorite tavern. The bartender and the wait staff fall easily into their comfortable routine as trays of food and drinks are constantly brought forth from the kitchen area to various tables throughout the common room. The waiters move in a sort of dance, dodging misplaced chair and tipsy patrons alike, as they balance large trays of stacked plates and full tankards.

A young human, likely in her late teens, catches sight of Sergor as he waves and motions towards his tankard. She nods politely and makes her way to the table to collect the cup and a few moments later brings it back from the bar full and frothy. Anyone else that finds themselves near the bottom of their mug is likewise treated in kind.

In the far corner of the common room a group of dwarves breaks out into laughter at some joke unheard by the adventures. They hoot and hollar about various things for a moment before settling down again. Near the center of the room, at a large circle table made of a dark and lacquered wood, a game of cards has been started and is being dealt around cluttered tin mugs and a few bottles of cheap wine. A human man with the dark tan skin of someone who's spent a lifetime at sea begins to deal cards out quickly to a pair of dwarves with auburn hair, a half-elf, and a tiefling with skin the color of dried blood.

Liuailo Galanodel

Liuailo took some mental notes of the strange persons he was sharing a meal with. Sergor and Torinn appeared to be the muscle, handy to know who to hide behind when things got dangerous. Judging by Aeron's eyes, he was as cautious as Liuailo was, and that was never a bad thing to have around. Keys and Kit appeared to like to share stories but he really couldn't really say much more about them other than their outgoing personality. Maybe Kit was a bit not right in the head, but seemed harmless enough so far.

When the card game broke out, Liuailo eyed its progress. Not that he was interested in joining, far from it. Games of chance involved too much uncertainty compared to his usual schemes. But when someone had too much ale and lost too much money, suddenly everyone around them is a no good cheat.

Liuailo leaned over and whispered to Aeron, "I'd keep an eye on that game. I've seen too many turn violent and that violence spreads quickly in places like these."

Torinn

Torinn growls a bit at the tiefling for the "afraid of vampires" jab and grips his tankard of Rockaxe tightly, before downing the rest, choosing not to make an issue of it, after deciding she was just making a joke of some sort.

As the tavern starts to fill up and become nosier and more raucous, Torinn begins to remember why he doesn't travel into the city all that often, as large groups of people bother him. He winces when the dwarves break out into loud laughter and frowns in their direction. Three tankards of ale and his volitile nature were all yelling at him to do something, but instead he decides to order his fourth ale, determined not to let his chance to drink go to waste.

Aeron

Having finished his mug of ale and what other food he could pick at. Aeron nods his head to the others and stands up. "It is getting late, and I want to be on the road early. Good night." He stumbles a half-step away from the table before steadying himself, hoping that nobody noticed. He then very deliberately walks toward the stairs, turns around, walks back over and grabs his longbow from where it was leaning against the wall, turns back around, and very very deliberately walks toward the stairs again. Ascending without too much difficulty, he gets into his room and shuts the door.

Not sure if we're sharing rooms or if we have single rooms, but anyone who happens to come in will Aeron passed out awkwardly on the bed.

Keys chuckles at Kit's vampire jest. He flashes her a grin; for the briefest of moments, his incisors seem elongated and pointy.

The gnome twiddles his thumbs for a moment, but as Aeron gets up to leave, he can sense the evening winding down.
"Well, I look forward to traveling with everyone tomorrow, bright and early. I believe I will pay my respects to this establishment; allow me to excuse myself."

Keys hops down from the bench and finds a visible corner of the tavern. He pulls up a stool and stands upon it, his fiddle in hand. With a waggle of his fingers, several multi-colored orbs of light appear from thin air and begin orbiting the gnome silently. His fantastic light show on display, he begins to play a merry tune on his fiddle, tapping his toes in time. It's not the greatest song in the world, which is a good thing, since it's difficult to hear over the growing din...

Keys cast Prestidigitation to create a harmless sensory display; in this case, temporary vampire teeth. He then casts Dancing Lights before playing his fiddle.

Kit returned the smile, but the effect was only mildly disturbing - her fangs were real.

She rolled back into her chair, tittering madly once again. "Don't break a string!," she called after the departing gnome.

Kit paused to catch her breath. "And then there were four," she said, eyes falling upon the brooding dragonborn. Her mouth quirked up at the corner, another flash of those wicked canine teeth. "C'mon," she said more softly. "I've never seen anyone drink so much who wasn't either depressed or an alcoholic, and you aren't smiling. Why don't you tell me what hurts?"

Torinn shrugs at the tiefling. "My smiles tend to put people off. My mouth doesn't pull in the same way others' do, so I end up just baring my fangs." The dragonborn bares his yellowed fangs to demonstrate. "Besides, its too rowdy here for me. If I didn't enjoy ale as much as I do, I'd be asleep already, away from all these people." As if to punctuate this, he takes another large gulp from his tankard. It appears that the alcohol has, at least, loosened the reticent dragonborn's tongue a bit, having almost said more now than the rest of the night combined.

"No excuses!" Kit cried. "Who cares if you've got teeth like an abandoned cemetery? If you're happy, then smile! Seeee?"

She demonstrated again, fingers tugging at the corners of her mouth. At least the tension had ebbed out of her, there and gone again in half a second - like quicksilver on a quicksilver sea. She must have been expecting the dragonborn to say something nasty.

"You'll make more friends that way," she added, a harmless little jab.

Don't be too late, you others, we hafta leave in the mornin'."
With that, the large dragonborn stands up, grabbing his greataxe and javelins from their spots leaning on the wall, not bothering to holster them, and heavily stomps his way across the room to the stairs, giving little heed to those in his way, expecting them to move for him.

Neverwinter : The Driftwood Tavern - Day 0

In response to the lights and illusions conjured forth by Keys, several other patrons adjust their chairs slightly to afford them a better view. The sound of wooden chairs sliding across worn wooden floors interrupts the din of conversation and laughter in random spikes of activity. The group playing cards at the center casts a few quick glances to see what the commotion is about but for the most part remain engrossed in their game. Keys begins with a bit of a rocky start, which loses the attention of several of the people in the room who turn back to their drinks and conversation, but after a moment or two begins to play a merry little tune.

Those who make their way towards the stairs are met by an assistant who directs them to one of three rooms near the end of the hall. Each room is small, though not terribly cramped, and has two small beds positioned against the walls. The rooms aren’t anything worth bragging about, and the beds little more than stuff mattresses and rag pillows, but they're paid for by someone else’s coin and likely the last bed you'll see for the next several days. At times activity down in the main room picks up but never enough to keep anyone from sleeping and by around two hours past midnight even the most rambunctious patrons have found their way out into the warm Neverwinter night.

Torinn groans noisily as he walks down the stairs into the tavern's common room, regretting drinking as much ale as he had. As he glances around and sees that he is the first of his companions to wake, he debates on whether he should wait for them to wake up, or if he should go and get the wagon of supplies ready. The dragonborn finally decides that he'd rather get on the road as soon as possible, and heads out to get things ready to go.

Neverwinter : The Driftwood Tavern - Day 1

The next morning's activities begin even before the sun begins to rise. Two of the tavern's workers begin to load a wooden wagon with the assorted provisions that Gundren had ordered. Two large kegs of strong ale are packed beside each other directly behind the driver's bench. Behind them a dozen sacks of flour have been stacked into two neat rows between several casks of salted pork. Near the rear of the wagon the men begin to pile in various bits of mining equipment: roughly two dozen shovels are joined by a similar number of picks and crowbars as well as five lanterns accompanied by a small barrel of oil.

Regardless of if the adventurers all join in to help with the loading, just after the first orange-red rays of sun begin to speckle the towers of the city the wagon is ready to set out. A pair of oxen is yoked to the front and a pair of reins is looped into place and hung casually over the bench seat awaiting a driver. The animals seem extremely docile and are perfectly content to stand and chew casually on a mouthful of oats while waiting for their driver.

With a few days travel ahead of them yet, the six adventurers give the wagon a final look over and set out on their journey south along the High Road, which leads south from the city and runs parallel to the Sea of Swords. To the east the mighty Neverwinter Wood rises just along the crest of the horizon and will continue to do so until the group reaches the Triboar Trail. Once they have done so, the group will leave the main road and travel east until they reach their destination.

The entire first day is spent traveling the road south and is mostly uneventful. The road is dry and dusty but the occasional easterly wind keeps the summer sun at bay. No danger rears its head and aside from the occasional travelers heading north, a few deer and one very curious fox is the only movement the group spots along the way. Lunch is had under a large shade tree not too far from the road and while it’s nice to give your feet a break after about an hour or so your journey is resumed until dusk. When night falls the party makes a small camp a little ways away from the road and proceeds to carry on schedule watch shifts through the night.

He assists with the loading of the wagon, and when the time to depart comes, he does his best to scout ahead on foot. When night falls, Aeron informs the group that he will take first watch.

When morning comes, he will brew a strong nettle-tea that he offers to other party members. It's bitter, but it helps to wake you up rather quickly. Aeron is ready to continue the journey at first light, opting once again to be on foot and scout ahead of the group.

Keys is quick to rise, bright-eyed and energetic. During the trip, he sits in the wagon, perched atop a barrel. He passes the time by playing tunes on his fiddle, on occasion using his magic to create mildly-entertaining distractions: glowing orbs of light, soft tinklings of ethereal music, or odd illusions of tiny clouds, birds, or miniature dragons.

And of course, should anyone be brave enough to strike up a conversation with him, they quickly find the gnome never shuts up.

Sergor

Sergor is awoken by a dull throbbing inside his skull and the sun needling into his eyes. After that second tankard, the evening was a blur. There was the gnome's music; some dancing with a brown-haired girl, and some lurching around in the arms of an ample chested woman; singing and more drinking with some dwarves...

Finally, with a little too much groaning, he gets up on his feet and heads downstairs. Just in time too - the wagon is practically rolling away when Sergor stumbles onto the scene. He spends the rest of the day quietly, hunched over as he wrestles down his queasy stomach.

Yet the walk out the city does him good: returning to the countryside restores some of his cheer. By the time night falls, Sergor is alert and offers to take the second watch.

Later that afternoon, Kit took her place at the wagon's flank, happy to stretch her legs and happier to see the countryside.

The tiefling wasn't her usual frenetic self for the time being. She walked slowly and wore the serene mask of someone who hadn't a care in the world, no plans for tomorrow, and a deep, resounding peace with the knowledge that things like family and adulthood were mere afflictions that happened to other people. From time to time, she tried making idle conversation with the rest, but for the most part, Kit seemed content to keep to herself, stopping here and there to chase a fox or some other small rodent into the weeds.

It wasn't entirely an odd look for her.

"I am familiar with the mask you wear, for I wear it myself." Aeron says to Kit, as the group breaks fast by the morning fire. "We orphans need to stick together. My family was killed by a volcano, and it has haunted me every day of my life since. You?"

"A volcano?" Kit asked, incredulous laughter bubbling out of her throat. Her laughter abruptly faded. "Oh," she blinked, realizing he was serious. Three decades out, the tragedy that struck Neverwinter and its surrounds was less than a distant memory to the nineteen-year-old tiefling. "Sorry."

"Never met 'em," grumbled Kit. "Don't plan to, either. I mean, one day, they left me on the doorstep of one of Neverwinter's rottenest orphanages without so much as a name, so why would I want anything to do with a pair of lousy tieflings like that?" Kit gritted her teeth and tossed a rock into the fire, sending an eruption of orange sparks into the wind. "I should thank them!" she said, quickly raising her voice. "Names- Names trap you! Names are like prison brands! Names come with a whole list of stupid responsibilities, and that's unfair 'cause they don't even all weigh the same. And that's why names are worse than useless," she concluded, stubbornly, "and I'm glad they never bothered. Ack, does that make sense?"

Aeron

"It does, actually," Aeron nods, "I do not know what my parents named me. I was but a boy when the fires and ash changed my life forever. The druids named me - Aeron means cursed one in the Old Tongue of the Druids, though it is meant satirically more than anything else. See, the Druids view all things in this world as part of the circle of life, all part of the balance. When nature's balance is upset, such as when man cuts down forests to make a village, nature resets the balance - sending a volcano to wipe the slate clean. I was spared, so clearly, as the Druids believe, Nature had a plan for me. I see myself as cursed because I lost everything that I hold dear, and the Druids see me as 'cursed' or 'destined' because I am somehow Nature's emissary - meant to deliver justice to Nature's enemies. They have an odd sense of humor."

Aeron kicks dirt on the fire and packs in his cooking gear. "Now then, shall we? I estimate we have a couple more days of travel ahead of us." Aeron offers his hand to help Kit up, and seems to attempt a smile in her direction.

Fun fact, I just picked the name Aeron because it sounded cool. Then I looked up the name in a Druidic dictionary, and "aer" refers to a magical curse, though it is used satirically. So ... there you go.

Keys

Keys' fiddling grows more somber as he eavesdrops on Kit and Aeron's conversation. Who knew that the lives of adventurers could be so sad? Keys made a personal promise to attempt to change that, if he could.
"That's an interesting perspective on the concept of names, Kit," Keys said from atop his barrel, "We gnomes have a much different philosophy. Names are simply what they are: a thing you call someone. They can be fun! Most gnomes collect them. Why, I have names that my family calls me, names from my friends, names from complete strangers, even a few insults that stuck. We don't invest much in them, but rather enjoy them for their own sake. It's one of the wonders of this great world that most other races have such an inflexible stance on nomenclature. I suppose if you get truly frustrated by one or more names, perhaps you should try the gnomish method, and simply make up a few yourself!"

Kit shrugged. "How do you think I got the name I have? Kit, like a kit fox? Or like the way 'kid' sounds when you're spitting out the words? Either way, when people call you something often enough, it tends to stick."

Liuaio always had a habit of being a late riser and this morning was no exception. He was practically tripping over himself to meet everyone downstairs before they departed.

Liuailo decided to take up a position at the rear of the wagon. He figured that way if they were ambushed, he can always claim someone else should have seen it first.

Liuailo avoided the heavier conversations about death by fire but took interest in the conversation about names. "Keys has it quite right, Kit. I've found if you aren't happy with who you are, or who people think you are for that matter, the best thing to do is make a new name for yourself. 'Tis always worked for me."

The Sword Coast : The Triboar Trail - Day 3

In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business." You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.

You've been on the Triboar Trail for about half a day and the sun hangs overhead as puffy white clouds drift lazily from the sea and head east. The trail is much narrower and rutted than the road had been but the pair of oxen still trudge along at mostly the same pace. Aeron estimates you've been making near twenty-five miles a day and at this pace may be lucky enough to reach your destination tomorrow evening. As you come around a bend, you spot two dead horses about fifty feet ahead of you directly, sprawled out in the middle of the trail and blocking it. Each has several black feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

Upon seeing the horses, the ranger quickly draws his bow and nocks an arrow. "Hold, everyone. Ready yourselves." he half-shouts back to the group. Inching forward, Aeron opens his senses to his surroundings, unsure if the threat has passed or not. He slowly makes his way closer to the horses. "Black fletched arrows, both horses dead. Hard to tell much else though."

Out in front of the group, Aeron notices the horses first and calls the group to a halt. Quickly, he begins to put his keen senses to work and deciphering the scene that sits before the party. Torinn pulls on the reins and pair of oxen slow to a halt and casually stand in the middle of the road awaiting further instructions. Hoping down from the wagon, the dragonborn brings his might greataxe to bear. Meanwhile, on the northern side of the wagon, Liuaillo crouches and readies his bow.

Liuailo notices that unlike the last few days the sounds of the woodlands have died down. Birds aren't chirping and even the drone of insects have died down despite being the middle of a summer day. Ahead, the shape of the two horses laying in the road is quite visible and several items are scattered in the road nearby. From this distance you cant make out all of it, but it appears to be the saddlebags that the horses had been equipped with.

Ahead, the shape of the two horses laying in the road is quite visible and several items are scattered in the road nearby. From your closer vantage point you can make out two important things. Firstly, these horses appear to the be same horses that Gundren and Sildar left on after your meeting in the tavern. Secondly the saddlebags have been removed from the horses and riffled through then left laying scattered in the road. Nearby a small leather map case, also opened and empty, has been tossed aside.

Though you're still at some distance, your time as a ranger allows you to see that the arrows are of a crude design and appear to have been fired haphazardly. Rather than keen strikes fired for a precise kill or to slow the target they appear to have simply pincushioned the poor animals until they dropped. The pools of blood beneath the animals have had time to soak completely into the soft dust of the road and have become so dark they are near black. This leads you to believe the corpses have been exposed to the elements for about a day or so and the summer sun has been doing them no favors. The dirt of the road appears to be heavily disturbed: footprints and scuffs abound but you'd need to be closer to check them better.

As Aeron picks up the empty map case and heads back towards the wagon several pairs of eyes watch him from the underbrush. Once the man's back is turned four dark shapes slowly stand up from their hiding places before bursting forth from the foliage. The creatures are slightly shorter than a human and have leather green-brown skin, large ears, and yellowed fangs. There are four of them in total, each dressed in crude leather curiasses, two of them are swining well-worn short swords while the other two are already nocking arrows into wooden shortbows. The two with swords begin to barrel down the embankments towards the wagon while the two with bows are content with having the high ground.

While all that was going on, Kit calmly stepped out into the open.

Immediately, her companions could tell there was something off about her. The tiefling’s hair was two shades darker. Her skin, still pink, was ashy pale. Somehow, she’d produced a rod from somewhere on her person. It was made of black iron, and all that energy that had been hanging in the air was suddenly focused at its tip, causing the rod to burn the sullen orange of metal fresh from the forge.

Oh, and her eyes were bleeding.

Words like broken glass rolled off Kit’s tongue, darkening the air in rhythm with every syllable. With practiced precision, the tiefling raised her iron rod and took aim at the second goblin swordmaster.

Something strange happened next.

Hair stood on end. A cold wind blew. Sounds became muffled and distant. Instead of the anticipated flash of light or hellfire, reality rippled as Kit’s spell took hold. Almost without thinking, she laid a curse. A nasty one.

And then the anticipated bolt of black lightning hellfire erupted from her rod, streaking through the air toward the hapless goblin.

Magical sleep had barely set in when a hex's dark curse began to bind itself to the hapless creature. Of course drops of acid gnawing at bits of its skin aren't urging it to be still. "You win..." He quietly sobs again.

Kit stood nearby suddenly, looking for all the world like she hadn't just spent the last thirty seconds calling up blasphemies from the deepest pits of Hell. She still carried the rod in her hand, though, and thready smoke wafted from its orange iron tip. She waved it around nonchalantly while she spoke.

"What's he saying? What's he saying? I doubt it's anything nasty. He looks really sad."

Kit gave Torinn a gentle push, encouraging him to step back.

"Please stop drooling on the goblin."

Nodding, the ranger gestures to Torinn that everything appears ok. "He says that we got them all, and that he's alone now. Torinn, if you can keep him cowed, and Kit, if you and the others check the bodies, I'll check the perimeter to see if I can glean anything else. If they took Gundren and Sildar, and were waiting for us, they might have a base of operations somewhere close by. Perhaps the Goblin can even lead us there, if properly motivated."

Looking back to the goblin, Aeron asks, "What is your name?"

Torinn has to take a step back to stop from falling over at the unexpected push from the tiefling. With anger in his eyes, the dragonborn turns his gaze on Kit. "I don't know what fight you just saw, but in the one I just participated in, this greenskin scum was part of the ambush that tried to kill us, and possibly killed our employer! That he didn't get a shot off is irrelevant, and even if it WAS relevant, its a greenskin! The only mercy it deserves is that of a rabid animal!" Torinn then takes a hold of his greataxe in both hands, and says "And if you want to keep your hands, tiefling, you would do well to not push me again."

Arguing didn't help. There was a job to do any money to be made and the end of it. Liuailo decided it would be best to defuse the brewing conflict as quickly as possible, but he couldn't help hide the frustration he felt.

"Now you both step back just one minute! I am not about to put our job and our lives at risk over a few hurt feelings! If you want to get paid at all then perhaps instead of squabbling like petulant children, the two of you ought to start helping Aeron get to the bottom of this ambush so that we can get on with delivering the supplies and finding Gundren if he even is missing at all!"

"Or you'll what? Are you going to kill me too because my skin's not the right color? Gods, you really are awful.

The Sword Coast : The Triboar Trail - Day 3

In answer of Aeron's question about a name, the goblin whimpers a bit before grumbling something in it's native tongue. The ranger has to think for a moment at the translation at first he's slightly confused at the thought of even a goblin being named 'Dirty Stain' but after the initial hesitation it suddenly clicks. He notices the bruise-like discoloration of skin along the jawline on the left side of its face. 'Splotch' likely a jeering nickname earned from his tribemates. Before the conversation can continue with the prisoner though a bit of an argument breaks out among the party.

While the group bickers, the sobbing goblin tries to scoot a few inches closer to the trees and isn't exactly subtle about doing so. Tied up as he is though he knows that he doesn't have a chance of escaping six armed adventurers.

South of the road just beyond the treeline you discover the hiding place where the goblins had lain in wait. Several blinds had been constructed that allowed them to remain out of sight while waiting until travelers were trapped in the narrow section of the road. Judging by the look of the area they've likely used the same spot to carry similar ambushes a dozen or so times.

Several blinds had been constructed that allowed them to remain out of sight while waiting until travelers were trapped in the narrow section of the road. Judging by the look of the area they've likely used the same spot to carry similar ambushes a dozen or so times. In addition to the smaller goblin footprints that liter the area along the road and into the trees there appears to be a narrow trail that winds through the foliage heading in a general northwesterly direction with fresh marks where something -- or someone -- was recently dragged.

"Hold up, I think I've found a trail of some sort. Heads northwest. Not sure how far it goes, but it couldn't be much more than a few miles." Aeron walks back over to the group, "Splotch here might be able to give us an idea of how long it would take. I don't like the idea of leaving the cart here, but I also don't like the idea of possibly leaving Gundren to the goblins."

Just as soon as it had started, the fight was over. As the group spreads out, looking for clues and interrogating prisoners, Keys shouts out from the back, "The wagon is secure!"

The gnome hops down and comes closer to the others. He winces a bit as the argument breaks out; he sympathized with Kit mostly: her heart was in the right place, at any rate.

"How far away are we from Phandelin? Perhaps we should take the wagon there, then circle back and follow the trail? I know time is of the essence, but we have no one to guard an unsupervised cart."

Kit came sauntering toward them several minutes later, pausing to gingerly pick her way across the corpse-strewn path. When she passed the desiccated corpse of the goblin she'd killed, Kit made a face, but otherwise said nothing.

"I found their hiding place in the trees," she said, tossing a half-shrug, "They must have been using it to watch the trail."

And then Kit walked past, walked over to where the goblin remained bound, hesitated, and then finally set down in the dust. She sat cross-legged, tail tucked underneath her knees. It was all she could do to keep from squirming irritably.

She stayed that way for a while, wrapped up in an anxious knot. Several times, Kit looked like she was about to say something, contribute to the plan, but then her expression cooled again and she returned to silence. It was obvious that she was still upset.

The goblin doesn't seem to be particularly hungry but if you offer it the food it takes whatever you've offered cautiously. If you offer everything from the trail ration at once he takes the fish first and seems content with that. Once he has the food he doesn’t begin eating though, whether it's because he's still bound or becuase he's simply lost his appetite from recent events. Splotch does not appear to comprehend either the elven or dwarven languages but does nod along emptily to anything said in Common. Aeron takes his pack off and sets it on the ground. He then begins to gather up some of the grass, putting it in his mouth and chewing while he pulls off his leather armor. Sitting down on his pack, Aeron examines the damage to the armor. He then lifts up his tunic and sets it next to him, sitting shirtless and still chewing away. Pulling out his waterskin, he washes the wound on his side and dabs at it with his tunic. He then spits out the mass of congealed grass that he had been chewing on, and spreads it across the wound. "Cragmaw chosen. Not just bandits now, we mercenary. Boss say we paid good money too." Splotch bursts out, quite obviously eager to brag about the might of his clan but then seems to realize that he's letting on to quite a bit of information. The goblin appears to mull things over for half a moment before making his next comment. "Don't know why... but I tell you who. Tell you who pay for dwarf man and you let Splotch go? Yes Yes Yes." He nods along to his string of yesses with increasing excitement that he may have a way out of this situation that doesn't involve a battleaxe or copious amounts of acid.

Without too much trouble you are able to lead the oxen and wagon from the Triboar Trail and navigate it through the trees to a point that a small ridge and thick forest blocks all view from the trail. Enough distance has been covered that you're pretty confident that not even the goblins, if there are more in the area, would accidently stumble upon it. Aeron and anyone who helps him are able to effectively hide the tracks of the wagon leading from the road to its hiding spot. You may choose to put some sort of marker near the road or in the trees that would signify the location to you. Of course there are also two dead horses that might serve that exact purpose.

The group makes a small, temporary, camp at the head of the goblin trail and rests up while continuing to pry information from their prisoner. Several of you begin to munch on your trail rations knowing full well what sort of events the rest of your day may end up thrusting upon you. Slowly, the sounds of the forest begin to pick back up around you; at first a lone bird began its calls but soon several others have joined in the chorus. The drone of insects flitting through the woods begins to softly rise and even a few butterflies casually find their way through the trees around you. One, sporting blue wings rimed in black with tiny white spots, flutters near Kit before finally coming to rest on one of her horns.

The group of adventurers enjoys a quick rest in the shade of the trees along the Triboar Trail letting the soreness of the road and of the goblin ambush wear off. Torinn manages to get a quick nap in, even while Sergor whistles and Aeron casually plays on his flute. Rather than make a full camp and spend the time cooking a full meal the group opts to nibble at their rations and a few non-poisonous berries can be found near where they hid the cart. Food is laid out for the pair of oxen who carry on as if they group hadn't just been ambushed, or was about to assault a goblin lair. Ignorance truly is bliss.

During this time some of you continue to try and pry information from your captive goblin. Liuailo and Aeron employ their best use of diplomacy, both in Common and in Goblin trying to slowly reassure Splotch that it's in his best interest to aid them. Should the goblin ever need a bit more reassuring, they remind him that Torinn could always be roused to come chat as well but that he 'doesnt enjoy being woken up early...not one bit'. A simple threat, but effective. Finally, hesitantly, he agrees to provide you with the information you're after, likely hoping that you'll take pity and release him at some point in repayment. Splotch relays to the group that his boss received a message from the leader of the Cragmaw Clan ordering them to set up ambushes along the road and to capture the dwarf Gundren Rockseeker. Apparently the dwarf and all of his belongings were to be delivered to the king himself who makes his home in an abandoned ruin of a castle somewhere in the southern tip of the Neverwinter Wood Someone going by the name of The Black Spider is paying handsomely for the dwarf and his map.

The group begins to pack up their gear and make ready to follow the goblin trail back to the hideout from which the ambushers have been planning their attacks. Splotch continues to try and dissuade you from venturing into the caves, especially with him in town, and pleads for his freedom. Despite this, you know that your friend is in dire need of your help and set out to rescue him. As you make your way along the trail you can clearly see the evidence of numerous goblin tracks back and forth along with the marks where two humanoid creatures were dragged for a while before apparently being picked up and carried. A mere ten minutes into your journey along the trail and Liuailo's keen even eyes spot a trap awaiting anyone who would dare venture towards the goblins hideout. A simple snare lies in wait ready to spring on anyone with poor situational awareness, likely leaving them suspended above the ground several feet. Your prisoner has nothing to say on the matter. As you continue further down the trail you cautiously keep an eye out for more traps and this time Aeron notices the leaves along the trail have been purposes placed and that the tracks go around them. Throwing back the false cover reveals a crudely dug pitfall trap roughly eight feet deep.

Finally, after near four hours of marching northwest along the twisting goblin trail you reach your destination. Ahead of you lies a small clearing in the trees before a large rocky hill at the base of which is a small natural cave from which a brook flows. The water babbles along the rocky outcroppings and skirts the edge of the clearing before disappearing into the forest. The cave is dark and no sources of light can be seen inside from the distance but all the same Splotch pleads for his freedom. "Please!" he whispers "I already tell you everything. King want dwarf man cause Black Spider pay much. If others see Splotch with you they try and kill him too. Please!"

"I'd like to believe that showing mercy, even to one such as Splotch, is enough to tip the cosmic balance a little closer to kindness, goodness, and peace. To kill in self-defense is one thing, but to execute a prisoner at our mercy strikes me as needlessly cruel. Set Splotch free, I say. Let the winds of fate take him where they will. If you want to kill goblins, then I'm sure there's a cave full of them right ahead. Now I suggest we figure out what we're doing to get Gundren before we're overheard squabbling."

Torinn

"Kit, the only questions you need to ask, are 'Is the world a better place if it lives?' 'Who will, or could, get hurt if I don't kill it?'" Torinn says, surprisingly gentle in his tone, considering he was just threatening her a moment ago. "It is...admirable that you are so forgiving. Honestly. But this thing," Torinn says, his tone harshening as he points to the pitiful goblin, "Wouldn't spare a second thought as it cuts the throat of a young child." An observant eye can see moisture beading around the dragonborn's eyes.

Kit lowered her rod even further, head bowed and shoulders tense. She didn't look up at Torrin, but stood where she was, staring at the ground like a child being scolded by its parents.

At the dragonborn's gentle urging, she clutched the rod to her chest in both of her shaking hands.

"I don't know," she protested. There were tears forming in the corners of her eyes now. "I don't know. I don't know."

Keys nervously shuffles his feet near the rear of the party. This confrontation had been itching away at the back of his mind during the whole trip, and now it had resurfaced, just as he feared.

"There is scant little mercy in this world," the gnome said softly, but loud enough so that all could hear him. We needn't soil our hands with what some would see as murder."

"But what if he's right?" she croaked, uncertainty quavering in every word. "They were waiting back there. Waiting for someone to come along. Waiting for a long time." Kit took another step back, but didn't look up. She didn't dare look up.

At least, not until Aeron finally cut Splotch free, but only then did she watch with a sour look on her face. The tiefling finally nodded her head, once, hoping against hope they wouldn't come to regret this later.

Cragmaw Hideout : The Cave Mouth - Day 3 : 1810

Tensions rise as the six adventurers’ discuss what should be done with their goblin prison. Sergor, Torinn, and Liuailo think it best to dispose of the creature so that it cannot cause more harm. On the other hand Kit, Keys, and Aeron make the argument that killing an unarmed prisoner is not the route to take and that he could be released. Tempers begin to flare and emotions begin to bubble up until finally the ranger steps forward and undoes Splotch's bonds, freeing him. Without even a second thought the tiny goblin begins to scramble back down the goblin trail in the direction from which they had come.

Torinnis the first to act and chases after the creature a few steps before spewing forth a gout of green acid which catches the goblin from behind. Stumbling and scrambling, Splotch manages to avoid the primary spray but thick globs of the acid cling to his clothes and skin along one side and begin to sizzle and burn. Letting out a cry of pain he claws at the acid trying to remove what bits he can before further damage is done but just then the blade of Sergor's battleaxe puts an end to his worries. The cut is clean and effective, severing the creature’s spine at the base of the skull and sending its head tumbling in the dirt for several feet. The lifeless torso slumps to the ground and sizzles with the sound of the acid gnawing away at the leather armor.

Ahead, the mouth of the cave still stands silent and dark. The shallow stream bubbles from the cave mouth, which is screen by dense briar thickets. The narrow path leads up to the stream and then into the cave on the right had side of the brook. The group is still within the safety of the trees at the foot of the goblin trail, and before them the clearing spans the few hundred feet from the tree line to the cave entrance.

Having planned out the strategy for entering the Crawgmaw Hideout the group of adventurers make themselves ready. Sergor takes his place at the front of the line and begins to head across the stream. Weapons are ready, torches are lit, and a marching order is decided. The gloom of the cave still lingers no light can be seen within its yawning maw as the fighter begins to wake through the stream cautiously expecting that guards would be seen in some cleverly cranny of the rocks at any moment. What he did not expect however was that as he climbed out of the stream onto the other bank he'd see east side of the stream flowing from the cave mouth, a small area in the briar thickets has been hollowed out to form a lookout post or blind. Wooden planks flatten out the briars and provide room for guards to lie hidden and watch the area-including a trio of goblins lurking there right now! Just as started as he is, the three creatures quickly grab for their bows and attack.

The room reeks with the stench of animals and savage snarls accompanied by the sounds of rattling iron chains greats you in addition to the, now louder, sound of running water. Aeron's offering of food, along with his experience with wild animals or this sort in the past, eventually allows him to calm the three creatures chained before you. They occasionally snap at each other out of habit but for now seem mostly curious as to whether the party might be considering giving up more food. They pace back and forth, dragging their chains along the rock and sand of the floor, and eventually one of them simply gets bored and sits down. You get the feeling that you'd be able to enter the room without being outright attacked like they would have originally.

Averting her eyes away from the wolves, Kit notices that at the edge of the torchlight along the main passage there appears to be another opening. This one is narrower than the doorway into the kennel and is in the opposite wall of the main shaft. The main passage from the cave mouth climbs steeply upward, the stream plunging and splashing down its west side. In the shadows, a side passage leads west across the other side of the stream, choked with rubble the path is made up of two steep escarpments with a small ledge between them. The first ramp of rubble ends roughly ten feet above 'ground floor' and the second ramp ends roughly ten feet above that. Aeron's torchlight dances along the walls and in the shadows of the ceiling to the north, you can just make out the dim shape of a rickety bridge of wood and rope crossing over the passage ahead of you. Another passage intersects this one, twenty feet above the floor.

As you scan the main tunnel ahead and look up at the rickety wooden bridge you catch the sight of something moving along it from the west towards the east. No one else in the group seems to have bothered to look up and go about helping or ignoring the fallen fighter.

Liuailo thinks quickly and grabs a secure grip in the rock wall beside him and begins to scamper up. Just as he gets a few feet up the wall the shape of his dragonborn ally rushes by beneath his feet.

Keys and Kit had already been scrambling to escape the trap and were running back towards the mouth of the cave. Keys spots the western passage and quickly scrambles up the pile of rubble which seems to hold fast. He braces for the inevitable avalanche should the force of the water cause another collapse but surprisingly the rocks seem to withstand the torrent. In the split second that Kit weighs the option of escaping the cave entirely or trying to take shelter near, but not in reach of, the wolves the wave catches up to her. She soon finds herself in the tangled mess of of wet, bruised, and angry adventurers laying along the banks of the stream at the cave's mouth.

Marching through the tunnel once again you begin to climb the steps in the step passage atop which the water trap had previously resided. A few lose stones still lie scattered about from the temporary damn wall but none of them impede your journey. You approach the steps through which the goblin had scampered off and at this point have a better vantage of the room itself. To your left is what remains of the large pool of water that had flooded the cave, beyond which is a second pool held in place by fieldstone damns. A narrow waterfall high in the eastern wall feeds the pools as the water flows from one to the other and then feeds the stream that flows through the cave mouth below. The sound of the waterfall fills this area making things harder to hear and spray dampens the gusts of air that waft over you. A pillar of rock and two large stalagmites block most of your view to the east but the room does appear to open up that way. Keys dashes into the waterfall chamber; on one hand he was somewhat sad, as he wanted to examine the waterfall and take in its beauty, but there was danger at hand, and he had to focus his concentration elsewhere.

Kit stayed close, rushing into the waterfall chamber in Keys' wake. She clutched the rod in her hand, seeking a better position to cast from.

Kit moves to R-10. I'm on my phone, so would someone mind moving Kit's token for me?

Encounter Five: These Puns Are Un-Bugbear-able

As Aeron enters the room he notices several things: sacks and crates of looted provisions are piled up in the south end of this large cave. To the west, the floor slopes toward a narrow opening that descends into darkness. In the middle of the cavern, the coals of a large fire smolder and trails of smoke wander towards the roof of the cave and hang there until slowly filtering out a crack somewhere above. All of these things however are the least of his worries though has he notices (as he had feared) that the goblin had ran to this room to call for it's allies. Two more goblins are to the rangers right, near the western edge of the room and a pair of large stalagmites, each of them drawing their short swords. To the left a large figure begins to rise from a makeshift throne of boxes.

"Klarg will build a throne from your bones, puny ones!!" The creature roars as it raises to its full height and a wicked looking wolf joins by its side. It looks like a much bigger, much hairier, goblin and the ranger recognizes it to be a bugbear. It reaches for a massive morningstar and large shield while roaring in anger.

Aeron

"We got a room full of goblins here!" the ranger shouts to his allies as he peeks around the corner. Taking aim, he shoots at the bowman and then backs out of view, not even checking whether his attack was accurate or not. "There's a few goblins and a bugbear and another wolf in there. Maybe we can draw them out?" he says to Torinn and the others.
