View Full Version : [3.X] Setting Neutral Deities & Pseudopowers

Hey all,

Looking for help to find all official 3.5 sources of deities that are not tied to a specific campaign setting. The ultimate goal is to create a reference table of some kind for these deities.

First, some stuff to get out of the way - not looking for Dragon Magazine, homebrew or 3rd party, please. Also, not looking for deities from "real world" pantheons that got 3.X stats (i.e. Norse, Egyptian etc.).

Definitely not looking for Greyhawk, FR, Eberron, Dragonlance or Kalamar based deities.

Having got that out of the way, let me get the ball rolling (note - some of these deities may have ties to one of the campaign settings mentioned above, but appear in their respective books also as "standalone" gods):

Book of Vile Darkness: Karaan, Rallaster, The Patient One, Scahrossar, The Xammux and Yeathan.

Complete Warrior: Altua, Syreth, Valkar, Halmyr, Lyris, Konkresh, Typhos, Sulerain & Nadirech.

Lords of Madness: Ghaunadaur, The Great Mother, Ilsensine, Mak Thuum Ngatha, The Patient One and Tharizdun.

Races of Destiny: Urbanus, Zarus, Tarmuid, Aulasha, Glautru, Soorinek, Syeret & Wathaku.

Arguably every god in the 3.5 PHB is setting-neutral since the Greyhawk association was implied rather than stated. Which would give us, I believe:

PHB: Boccob, Corellon Larethian, Garl Glittergold, Gruumsh, Moradin, Nerull, Pelor, Yondalla, Ehlonna, Erythnul, Fharlanghn, Heironeous, Hextor, Kord, Obad-Hai, Olidammara, St. Cuthbert, Wee Jas and Vecna

But that's arguable and can be disregarded as either too obvious or not actually setting-neutral. More relevantly, from the back end of Deities and Demigods, we have:

Deities & Demigods: Taiia, Elishar, Toldoth, Dennari, and Erbin

The dragon Pantheon is kinda weird. They are in RoDr as setting neutral gods, but the big two (Bahamut and Tiamat) also appear in pretty much every setting out there. Stormwrack has a list on p.49.

I'd say any god is setting dependent actually. You could pull off a cleric of pretty much all gods in one of the overarching settings, like Planescape or Spelljammer, but, otherwise, I'd be hard pressed to allow PHB gods in a custom or specific setting besides the one they stemmed from.

Pretty much this. I'd say that all 3.5 deities are pretty much setting-specific, both theoretically (i.e.: they depend on a setting to exist) and practically (i.e.: every "setting undefined" deity is meant to exist in Greyhawk).

Yeah, it's a given that the deities are "setting dependent", in that the maker of the setting chooses. But I think the OP is asking for deities that weren't made specifically for a setting.

The draconic deities aren't really tied to any specific setting that I'm aware of (or rather I don't think they were made specifically for any particular setting). They're laid out in the Draconomicon.

They are
Aasterinian
Astilabor
Bahamut
Chronepsis
Falazure
Garyx
Hlal
Io
Lendys
Tamara
Tiamat

There's also all the monsterous dieties, but I'm not going to list those because I don't have the book, and I don't feel like digging through wikipedia. (which btw has a list of all the D&D deities to date, and I think lists their domains, books and setting if they are setting specific)

All deites are setting-specific. Some may appear in many settings (mainly the racial deities like Gruumsh, Corellon, Moradin etc) but they're still specific to their respective settings.

It's largely due to cosmology. Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms are essentially the same setting with some minor differences, and as such you will find several common gods between the two. However, you're not gonna find any common with a setting like Eberron.

Isn't Ghostwalk also a campaign setting though?

Yes it is. And its gods woudn't work anywhere else. Its cosmology is weird.

There are gods in Libris Mortis. The ones I remember are Doresain and Evening Glory, but there are a couple others.

There's also Vorel (sister to Tiamat and Bahamut, presumably the maker of orange, purple and yellow dragons, killed by the former) and Sardior (creator of the gem dragons). Every single one of them are Greyhawk deities. :smalltongue:

As far as I'm concerned the deities laid out in books that aren't setting specific (like the draconimicon, or the core books) are the setting neutral ones. Yeah they happen to be present in Greyhawk, but they can show up in any generic setting. I've never played any setting specific games, but we would still use the core deities.

I was only listing the stuff in the draconomicon because that's the only non core book I have on hand to look into, those gods I missed are not in the draconomicon.

To clarify: by non-setting specific, I mean not strongly tied to an "official" campaign setting. The warrior pantheon in Complete Warrior is a perfect example. To the best of my knowledge, these gods don't have ties to any existing published campaign setting.

Yes, for the nitpickers, once I use them in my game, they are "specific" to my campaign world. :smalltongue:

Others (as has been pointed out) are a bit more blurry - the gods presented in the PHB are all Greyhawk deities initially, but in the context of the PHB, are presented as standalone entities that any DM can drop into his own world if he doesn't want to generate his own pantheon(s). Similar with Bahamut and Tiamat - they have appeared as connected with more than one published setting, but in sources like Races of the Dragon, are, again, "standalone" entities.

Thanks everyone for your input, and keep the suggestions rolling!

The Living Greyhawk Official Listing of Deities can be found here:

http://www.wizards.com/rpga/downloads/LG_Deities.zip

Most of the deities are obscure enough that you could use them in any campaign setting and nobody would know they were from Greyhawk. There are some non-specific deities sprinkled in there as well, such as draconic and non-human deities that have been printed elsewhere without any specific campaign world implied.

Great list Darrin!

123456789blaaa - interesting point, I guess I need to make some kind of distinction. What is a better term than deity for any D&Dverse being that can grant spells (other than an ideal)?

Pseudopower, maybe?

Pseudopower is a great suggestion, thanks.

I've got a couple of job interviews today, but when I get time I will start formatting a table.

Keep the suggestions/additions coming in everyone, great work!

None of these are deities. They may be worshipped and grant spells but they aren't actually gods.

Orcus is portrayed as having gone from demon to actual deity in the Ghostwalk setting. In the Greyhawk setting he had to be killed first, and come back as the god "Tenebrous" - and his career didn't last long.
