If I gave a Ranger the full animal companion progression like a druids, what should I take in exchange?
Or is the ranger bad enough off in the first place to just grant it as an balancing attempt?

first: depends
second: this sounds like it belongs in the home-brew section.

Take nothing. In my games I mostly run full-animal companion, full-caster level Rangers. Never had a problem.

Very much this. Give them a full animal companion, and then if you're in a sufficiently powerful game, maybe give them more stuff. Rangers need hugs of various kinds.

Yeah that's what i figured personally. Thanks for the reassurance.

In Pathfinder, the ranger companion is -3 instead of 1/2 level, and you can simply take Boon Companion to make it full progression. So the answer to your question is that it doesn't break anything and they don't need to pay anything to do it, other than a feat if you're so inclined.
