Obtaining/Purchasing a Pet

Greetings, Playground. I was pondering ways to gain a mundane pet without the use of Handle Animal (as it is not a native skill for my class) -- I was originally thinking Warbeast, but an owl Warbeast is... silly?

Any suggestions are welcomed (I need to ensure that it will perch on my shoulder and stay there.

Wild cohort (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a) would do this pretty well. It's like an animal companion obtained feat style. Owl is even one of the listed options.
