View Full Version : Ways to increase a fly speed?

I have a character with a fly speed of 20' (perfect). Perfect is great, but 20' is really slow.

Are there any ways to increase fly speed? There's expeditious retreat, longstrider, fast movement, dash, and a bunch of other ways to permanently or temporarily increase one's base land speed. I'm striking out in finding a way to do the same for flying...any ideas?

There is at least one spell in the spell compendium(Air wings?) that doubles natural fly speed.

Haste, though it is temporary.

There's the Improved Speed feat in the Draconomicon that adds +20 to your fly speed (plus some other stuff), but you need to be of the dragon type. You might negotiate with the DM to engineer a feat that improves your fly speed a bit.

Haste increases all your movement speeds by 30 ft., up to a maximum of twice the natural speed (which you'd hit here, making your fly speed 40 ft.) Likewise, a monk's speed bonus doesn't specify a particular type so it applies to all your natural movement speeds. Both of these are enhancement bonuses, so they don't stack.

The Speed of Thought psionic feat increases your speed by 10 feet while you're psionically focused; again it doesn't specify a type so it applies to all natural movement speeds. This one's an insight bonus, so it would stack with the haste/monk boost.

The hustle psionic power gives you an extra move action in a turn. It's not technically an increase to your fly speed, but it will let you move further in a round.

If you are willing to look outside of standard D&D, Arcana Evolved has a spell that increases fly speed x10.

Er, Wings of Air, the spell Meklor meant, and its counterpart, Greater Wings of Air, both only increase the maneuverability grade of flight. Which doesn't help someone with "perfect" already. The 2nd level druid spell from the Compendium is Cloud Wings, and it only adds +30 ft., not doubles. Though actually, +30 is better than doubled in this case, isn't it?

There's a feat in Planar Handbook called Air Mastery or something. I took it as a Janni (who have a mere 10 ft. Perfect) to get a decent speed.

^The feat is called air heritage and it gives +30ft to fly speed

Heart of Air (CM) is an hour per CL buff that adds 10' fly speed among other things. Haste has already been mentioned. Flight of the Dragon (Drac) gives 100' fly, but it's more replacement than extension of what you have I think.

That would be it.

Of course, Air Heritage can't increase the fly speed it increase more than itself. Meaning, it would make the speed 40', not 50'.

Look in Races of the Wild. There are quite a few flying based feats in there. Im pretty sure one increased flight speed.

Nope, not one that improves fly speed there. I looked for it for my character who has 30 ft fly speed, and there is none. There are those that give you certain benefits while flying, though...

There's Rapid Flight, from Races of Faerun.

Of course, due to editing error, it was left out of the book itself. You have to go to Eric Boyd's (http://www.ericlboyd.com/dnd/feats.html) site to find it.

Savage Species had feats for natural flyers. It was a 3.0 book, but I don't think another rulebook is out there that overrules it.

Take some levels in artificer, invent jet boosters?

So, to recap:

Heart of Air (CM), personal only, 2nd level spell.
and
Air Heritage (Planar Handbook), feat that will net you +20'

These are the only 3.5 ones presented (I'm pretty sure RoF is 3.0)

There's a spell in RoD that increases a temporary fly speed (ie: one from a spell) by 30' for as long as the spell lasts up to 1 hour per level, but you said actuall fly speed so that won't help.

Races of Faerun and Savage Species are both 3.4 in that they were written with 3.5 in mind despite being 3.0 books.
