Laruc, Virgil, Pog and Redrick managed to find the Kajitsu Star and the lantern, killing spiders, setting horses on fire, kicking dogs around, having parties with the goblins, shooting fireworks and defeating a powerful Goblin Black Druid Witch, Vorka. Along the way, they became accepted in the Licktoad Goblin community and the Chief promised his daughter's hand to Pog.
They are currently back at the village of Castenor, where Master Ludwig's brother, Wolfgang Mather, lives. Since they've arrived, the Umbra Carnival has been in town, and so they took some time off before returning to headquarters.

Meanwhile, Valken, The Infamous Thunder Pirate, arrived in town, meeting with Wolfgang and looking for them.
For many years, Valken Ironbeard sailed under the banner of "The Iron Pride" and Captain Amadeus Mather's command, (Yes, the father of Ludwig and Wolfgang.) until the ship was attacked and taken away by a Ghost Ship, leaving only Valken behind. He came back to Master Ludwig to tell him what happened, so they could work together on a way to bring them back, or at least have revenge.

Ludwig, Wolfgang and Valken seem to know of a way to save their father and friends. This will be revealed soon,

After their first assignment to investigate a tower in the town of Northback, which was supposed to be haunted and was not, the adventurers were traveling the Kingsroad back to headquarters, when a farmer asked for their help healing his son.
Since then, the group ventured into an old and abandoned temple of Pelor, fought a Water Snake and lost Selig, a Paladin who couldn't take it and went home.
They are currently exploring the temple, in order to save the boy.

GAME WORLD FACTS

I never created a game world. Neither did I create a full plot. But since some of you have started to build strong backstory hooks and motivations (best examples of this are Pog and Valken from Group 2), I figured that we all could work together to create the world. So here's some facts about it:

- There's headquarters, where Master Ludwig resides and from where he operates your missions and business. You all met Master Ludwig before, and you all know he's a Sorcerer-King; he built and rules over his own Citadel, where an actual town has spawned;
- There's Havenhollow, the village near the Manor of Astabar, and the Crooked Crow Inn;
- There's the Kingsroad connecting all these towns;
- There's the town of Castenor, where Wolfgang Mather, the "mayor", lives, currently hosting the Umbra's Carnival, so there's that too;
- There's the Licktoad Goblin Village. They're friendly. A little too friendly, perhaps.
- There's a foreign Japanish-like country, from where the Kajitsu come from ( I actually took this from PF's world, Golarion )
- There's the town of Northback, which apparently has a tower and prankster kids;
- There's some cool backstory elements from some of you.

All suggestions are welcome. If you have friends that wanna join, Group 1 and Group 3 have open spots. We can take 3 more players (or 2 if Shane B comes back), but only by invite (mine or yours).

Let's build a great game world, enriching our backstories and main plot.

Well hello there, looking forward to getting started.

Will we be using separate threads (OOC/IC) for each group's missions then?

Also, i think we need to come up with some awesome names for our groups

Character Creation
Name: Rhogar of Clan Nemmonis
Class: Tempest Domain Cleric
Race: Dragonborn (Blue)
Background: Sailor. Hatched high in the cliffs along a storm lashed coastline and serving his clan upon human vessels providing his god's protection through the rough seas in exchange for coin and the pick of their trade goods. Rhogar has come ashore once more to further pursue his clans and his gods work. Finding employment with Master Ludwig's Adventuring Company provided the opportunity to further his skills and discover vital information that might benefit his clan in the coming years.
Motivation and Goals: Rhogar's main goal is his clan, which for the past few decades has been in slow decline. He hopes to gain either some information his clan might use to secure better trade or even tributes from it's neighbours, or to uncover an artifact so they could take that by force. Secondary to that is his god, Thunder and Lightning, raw primal power, he revels in the chaos and unbiased power of nature and hopes to channel such forces himself.

Like this, but a deep cobalt blue...

Was thinking about that =) You could name your groups. I'm posting the 1st groups game thread as we speak. Group 2 and 3 will follow soon. Will have the 3 game threads up today.

Will create an OOC thread for each group as soon as you guys decide the names =) If I was playing, I would vote for "Power Rangers" :smallcool:

Checking in

I have not yet made a Mythweaver's sheet, I'll throw one together today despite loathing the formating (ick) but for the moment I'll copy over the text version from the recruit thread. Should be complete as I just went with the standard starting equipment.

Name: Kelimo "Kel" Kale
Class: Druid
Race: Half-Elf
Background: A young shaman on a pilgrimage who managed to get himself robbed (figuratively and literally) along the way now having completed the voyage seeks to raise funds to make the lengthy voyage home and complete his journey

Description: A short young man of unpreposing height at 5'4" with the slender build marking him to be of elven heritage. Tanned skin mark his heritage of one of the worlds wood elf tribes, but his pointed ears are hidden by a mop of raven black hair. Eyes are a soft blue color. Dressed in the simplest of garb with a pair of loose fitting off-white trousers and a vest with with a suit of leather armor. Carries little more then a pack and a quarter staff of driftwood. Never wears shoes. (Not a half-elf but best picture I could come up with (http://www.zerochan.net/1067594))

Motivation and Goals: A free spirit in the truest sense of the words Kel believes in harmony with nature via listening to the self as one's connection to the greater world, thus he lacks and doesn't care for such notions as plans taking matters as they come and drifting like a leaf on the wind. While he has a goal to return home this he does not consider this more that an intermediate thing. He does however have a few principles he honors. That which would defile the natural world he will oppose, and that which threatens his friends he will fight. And the worst sin of all though is the crime of wasting food.

Background: Outlander
Feature: Wanderer
Ideal: Life is like the seasons, in constant change, and we must change with it. (Change)
Bond: Injury to an unspoiled wilderness is an injury to me.
Flaw: I am too enamored of ale, wine, and other intoxicants.
Trait: I'm always picking up things and absently fiddling with them, sometimes breaking them.

Backstory:
Far to the south lie the Spider Forest Islands. The name referring to the roots of the tropical islands impressive mangrove forests. Long protected by a wood elf tribe who call themselves simply the First Folk and who follow a radical sect of druids that believe that in ancient days there were no gods and that all the races were but ever-changing spirits at one with the land and beasts. Rarely visited and off the main trade routes the First Folk kept to themselves, and were mostly left alone. A small trading port never growing to more then a town.

Kelimo Kale's mother was a ship captain who had the misfortune to wreck on the isolated islands. His father sheltered the human woman, and romance blossomed, followed by one child. After his birth Kel's mother returned to the sea, becoming one of the few regular traders to call on the islands, but her long absences led to Kel being raised by his father among the First Folk. While half-elves often have difficult upbringings among humans it is perhaps more difficult for those raise among the elves. For it is easier to grow up fast then to hold back the inevitable and so Kel found himself growing older quicker then the his peers. Eventually he became rather unconnected from most people.

Following his father somewhat whimiscally he sought to become a shaman of his people. While a trial for his father and other instructors he showed little care for theology but a nigh instinctive grasp for connecting with the world around him thus was allowed to continue. Eventually it came time for the final task to be accepted as full member of the circle, a pilgrimage away from the islands alone and unaided by family to a collection of sacred natural sites. While the locations varied Kel was given perhaps the most difficult and distant of routes. Yet he set off with enthusiasm, wanting to see more of the wide world and its many lands.

While he completed his pilmgrimage there was trouble along the way. The coin he had saved all his life should have been sufficient for the trip and return, but he discovered the pleasures civilization had to offer as well as its dangers. Robbed literally once when he was careless, and more figuratively by tavernkeepers along the way he found himself broke and in need of a ready source of funds to afford passage to return home. This lead Kel to Ludwig Mather's Adventuring Company.

Appearance
Dorrine taller than the average woman and a trim, athletic build. She has muddy-red shoulder blade length hair and clear blue eyes. Her looks are simple, though pretty.

When adventuring, she wears leather armour over a sleeveless, cream coloured tunic. On her back, she wears a backpack filled with her gear. On the top, one on each side, is strapped a hooded lantern. On the left side is a coil of rope. Attached by two straps, to the bottom, is a tightly rolled bundle that includes her outdoor sleeping arrangements including a bedroll, blanket and tent. She is meticulous in its rolling each morning and takes pride in how little room it takes, relative to its contents. On her back, under her pack there is a thin space where a quiver and bow rest. On each hip she carries a shortsword.

When not adventuring, she tends to wear a somewhat strange style of sleeveless gowns and tunics, that revealed her detailed arms, but with a rather modest midriff that while snug, go well on to her hips.

Personality
Dorrine is often described as arrogant and proud. She asserts herself and is not above being sarcastic and getting people she finds to self-righteous extremely flustered. She seems to have little use for noble or religious types, though she can be extremely diplomatic when negotiating work. She is impressed by strength and work ethic. She also cares deeply for the less fortunate, having known what it's like, and she is patient and friendly to those she sees as shy and reluctant around others.

Background
Dorrine was born poor to a single mother. She never asked or cared who her biological father and was never told. Her mother worked tirelessly to provide for her and Dorrine would help out with as much as she could.

When she was twelve, her mother caught the eye of a wealthy widower. In an elaborate courtship, the man won her mother's heart and they were married eight months later. This gave Dorrine a father as well as a brother who was twenty years old with a wife of seventeen years of age.

Her new family treated her and her mother extremely well, as if they had always meant to be a part of it. Wanting to please her father and be the best nobleman's daughter possible, Dorrine would throw herself into studies and 'catching up' as rigorously as possible. She would learn etiquette, history, writing, fashion, dance and many other things that were expected of daughters in her new class, never finding them boring or dull, but eager to be the best.

At age seventeen, something would happen. What exactly, Dorrine does not speak about. All she would say is that her presence in her household would cause a great scandal that she could not let her family bear. With the blessing and provision of her step-father, she left for a caravan guarding company he often employed, and trained with their captain until she learned the necessary skills to set out on her own. She knows her family released news that their beloved daughter met an unfortunate accident and wanted it that way. She took on the surname Bertard a family loyal to her step-father who agreed that if asked, she was a second-cousin and would say nothing more about her.

Though the guard company would have had her stay as long as she wished, Dorrine decided to move away on her own, believing it's best to put distance between herself and her home, lest someone should recognize her. She now travels from company to company, never staying for long. Her reasons vary, from the attention of a would-be suitor, to increased position within a company, to simple wanderlust and the desire for something new or something that fits. Her most recent signing on is with Master Ludwig's Adventure Company and she plans to stay a while longer than normal as her funds have run low and wandering isn't exactly a paying profession. That is, however, if nothing should arise that would cause her to leave.

...huh, I'd meant to hyperlink the sheet in my original post and didn't notice I hadn't until now. That's embarassing . Well here it is: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=27181.

Alright, Redrick Infis, Tiefling Warlock/Entertainer has been built.

http://img.4plebs.org/boards/tg/image/1376/95/1376952723683.jpg

Redrick was damned from the day he was born. While certainly most tieflings had a choice in how they lived their lives and how they ultimately ended up, his family was a little different. One of his ancestors made a much more explicit pact with their devilish patron - not only would they be marked as a tiefling, but all of their blood would have their souls bound to the devil for all eternity and sent to the Nine Hells. He could only imagine his ancestor hadn't realized that 'all of their blood' included all of their blood that had yet to be exist.

It was a cursed life. Every member of his family despised the idea of death and damnation, and often lashed out as 'they were damned anyway, they might as well enjoy it'. This sentiment was something Redrick could agree with, and so as was tradition he ran away from home as soon as his legs were long enough not to give out on him. At first he was just a vagabond, but despite his delvish appearance he soon learned he had a way with words. This way with words soon turned to song, and when he first picked up a strangers lute to try plucking a few strings it was as if lightning had hit him out of the sky and told him this was what he was supposed to be doing.

His music was swift, hard, and catchy. It caught on with much of the young people, and he soon gained some small amount of fame. But the knowledge that no matter how much wealth or fame he accomplished he was still a damned man plagued at him. He went through mood swings between doing risky, illegal pleasures because it was all for naught anyway and solemn, depressing moods where he remorse what he had done and his lot in life. His music began to reflect that, and soon it was known that he was a musician that could instill equal parts fervor and melancholy.

But then something happened to change his lot in life. It seemed he had fans on more than one plane. When passing a crossroads late at night, a devil emerged from the earth with a succubi on each arm and a strong stink of alcohol. It offered Redrick a lock of one of the succubi's hair as a proof of its favor, and also an intriguing offer. The devil really HATED the one that had signed off one the pact so long ago, and offered to buy up the deal and release all the future souls that would otherwise be bound to it, Redrick's included. But the devil thought the material a little boring, and thought Redrick up for more than just playing in inn's. So he would only do so if Redrick could play a true performance before five different kings of five different lands in his life time, and then complete a single other task of the devil's choosing.

Seeing no downside, Redrick accepted, and the devil imbued a shard of his power to help him along the way. Newly reinvigorated with a driving purpose to succeed, the tiefling continued to play as hard as he might... and yet never progressed far from simple inn fame. Distraught and desperate. the tiefling decided to gain his fame another way - he would become a famous adventurer, and play before the kings when he had saved their lands from disaster.

Sorry, don't really pay attention to tense when I write. I usually write in present for PbP, but depending on the context I may write in past to describe things over a longer period of time. Or, I just write in past because I don't know :smalltongue:. I can make an effort to do whatever the group decides on.

I tend to write in the past tense unless it's an action I'm rolling for, such as an attack.

I tend to write in the past tense unless it's an action I'm rolling for, such as an attack.

I tend to prefer past tense, too, but it's not a strong preference.

Also, after wondering why Laruc was like the only character in the party without persuasion, (despite it being one of his defining character traits), I realized that his background and his class should give him 6 skills, not 5. Persuasion has been added, at DM's discretion, of course.

Also, realizing that everyone's probably mispronouncing the name; it's La-rooque, not La-ruhk. Not that anyone cares that much, but he sounds a lot more debonair that way. (And his "real" name isn't quite as flattering.)

Also, also, realizing after that last post that I probably should have checked to see if the goblins besides the chief spoke common.

markodore64
2014-09-09, 08:22 PM
what tense are we doing this in?

I was thinking about this too. Do games on GitP typically just arbitrarily choose a tense for each game...? I sometimes like to use both, like Muenster said, to indicate overlapping spans of time; even if it's "incorrect". I think present tense gives an immediacy that works really nice sometimes.

Can we leave it to personal preference? Or does that make it difficult for any of you to follow along.

Anubis Dread
2014-09-09, 08:45 PM
What's a tense?

In all seriousness I tend to switch back and forth. During slow action or talking I tend to use past tense, while during more fluid action scenes I use either less hard past tense or present tense. So I really don't mind either way.

Muenster Man
2014-09-09, 08:45 PM
I'll try to write in past tense and keep it consistent if that's what folks want, although I might have to do what Surgate said and write in present to describe actions I'm rolling for.

Also, I did the same with Virgil. I realized he was supposed to get Athletics as a skill from his background, but forgot to mark it on the sheet.

Just a couple of general questions. I am new to play by post mode of gaming. So far I am really impressed with the narratives that other players present with their posts. But I don't know what rules, if any, exist in posting, and I don't want to inadvertently break any protocols. Can I assume that I should only post my reactions and actions and not any NPCs? Do I need to wait for everyone else to post before I post? If I want to do a skill check how do I go about doing that, etc.

Foodle
2014-09-09, 10:59 PM
Only thing with rolling in your posts is DONT use the preview button. It will mess up your rolls and you'll end up with [roll0] etc. instead of the actual rolls.

As to your posts, it's generally acceptable to assume things about your surroundings based on the description the GM gives you. If he says you're outside an Inn with a hitching rail for horses out front, feel free to assume there's a trough there if your character wants to wash its face or something, or generally anything that's just fluff. Just don't go intimidating a NPC and going on as if it actually worked, that's what the rolls are used for and the GM will usually post up something letting you know, or giving the NPC's reaction.

You can post multiple times too, which makes sense if you're having a conversation with another character etc, the only time you have to wait for others to post generally is in combat.

Checks generally in a spoiler at the bottom of your post, like:
Things in spoilers are generally considered OOC, so you can describe what you're trying to do if you want or just make a roll and hope the GM can guess from the IC part of your post above.

Two logistical questions!

Are we expected to follow the narrative in all the groups?
And second, I'm thinking a separate OOC thread for each group would be cumbersome for all of us, especially the DM. :) So what about posting group-specific OOC comments in our respective IC group threads? This Living Room thread could be reserved for chat and announcements relevant to all the groups, yeah?

Muenster Man
2014-09-10, 03:57 PM
I've popped my head into a couple of other groups sessions out of curiosity, but I don't think it's expected.

As for OOC stuff in IC threads, it can work if OOC conversations are kept in spoilers and marked as such, but I'd rather keep this up all in this thread or have separate OOC threads.

For clarity, I don't mean OOC stuff like "hey guys, here's a picture of my dog!" -- I'm only referring to game-relevant OOC comments, like kazooka's below for example.

But if we end up with individual OOC threads for each group, we'd need to keep this thread to communicate with all the players at once. And I'm fine with that option as well.

(Background info: This is my first game here in a while, and those previous were short-lived, so I don't know the customs. And I have tons of notifications coming in all day, most work-related, so the least amount of irrelevant pings the better. :)

I think it's too early to picking a name for groups. But that's just me. I feel a worthy name will come from our actions over the course of the adventure. Names hold great power and weight, after all; It should have meaning to it, on top of sounding cool.

Thoughts so far:

Filtro is awesome.

I had to make a decision between a forgery kit and a disguise kit when I rolled up this character. I thought, "Forgery kit? What use is that going to be?" Turns out I've come up with three or four different things I would have wanted to do with it to date.

Laruc has this personality trait that points him towards elaborate plans. I'm beginning to wonder if that's more a reflection of my personality than I might have previously thought. I'm not going, "No, no, it needs to be more elaborate." Everything I come up with is pretty elaborate to begin with.

We've been collectively rolling really high. Makes me nervous about the bad times to come.

Wait, I thought we were Dorrine and the Four Compadres....

Haha, yeah I think a group name should just flow naturally. It might be something that gets created spur of the moment, something that all of a sudden villagers start calling us because of something we've done or perhaps something more formal because the characters decide that's what they want. But however it happens, group 3 will have the more kick-in-the-backside-awesomest-rockin name....

Yeah

markodore64
2014-09-12, 09:01 PM
Rules question, and maybe this is something about 5e that I'm just not getting yet. What if your class and background grant you access to the same proficiency? Does it double up somehow or are you just kind of losing a perk because of the overlap...?

Foodle
2014-09-12, 09:34 PM
"If a character would gain the same proficiency from two different sources, he or she can choose a different proficiency of the same kind (skill or tool) instead." -Page 125, PHB

I imagine it only applies to tool proficiencies, since your class would allow you to pick a different skill so you're unable to double up there. But DM might rule otherwise.

Nope, we understand. Elly adventures to raise funds for her hormone treatments. Just as valid a reason as any other adventurer! :smallwink:

-

Also, while working overnight and reading PHB (yeah, got paid $14/hr for 12 hours and all I did was read it and post on here!) I noticed some things that needed to be changed on Dorrine. One was while her background allowed her proficiency with an instrument, it did not give her one, she would have to buy one herself. She thought to herself about playing her lyre, but didn't say anything out loud, so pretty much that thought needs to be disregarded. Second was finesse vs light weapons. I didn't really look into the difference until now, where I chose two hand axes instead of shortswords without realize I can't use dex to damage and attack with handaxes, I switched to shortswords which was the other option. (Two shortswords or two simple melee)

I also switched her background (also didn't realize you picked two personality traits) to go more with her backstory and I expanded on her backstory. I did kind of mix Noble and Outlander together for backgrounds to make it more her. I also hadn't realized that her wanderer feature from the outlander background, allowed her to gather food for everyone making rations not needed in the wilderness. So she didn't need to complain about eating them again. Another oops! I also spent her starting gold so she has almost no money which is also more fitting.

But background, personality and such are on her character sheet and I will get them on her statblock post at the beginning of this thread when I wake up this evening.

I almost feel like they should be exaggerated a bit, as if they were rumors/boasts from each company. Unless Master Ludwig requires detailed reports from each group at the end of their missions that is.
