So I was at Gen Con and was talking to the people involved with running the D&D encounters and some of the designers. Due to some information I have been seeing on the sites I will list some of the information I found out here.

I found out you start out at 3rd level. You only do first and second if you are teaching people the game.

Personally, I like to start at 5th. But that's just me. It might make the CR 2 Challenge of the Intellect Devour-er make more sense. Or I could be completely wrong. So who knows.

Yeah, I plan for level 3 to be the starting level as well. It's when the Subclasses first come online, and it's low level enough that its still simple to throw together a character, but high enough that you won't die quickly.

Starting at 5th is understandable, that's when the classes really start coming into their own, but I personally will seldom start games that high level. I usually do 1-20 campaigns. But then, I'm lucky enough to have a reliable weekly group over the last 5 years.
