Ok, allow me to explain this creature.
In the game I am currently running the party has managed to get a deed to a castle and the land its on, don't worry they aren't getting the castle just the land by the end, but its haunted of course. The castle is 200 years old and has echos of it split across 4 dimensions, one in the martial plain and three in the dreams of its former owner who is guarding a powerful artifact. This artifact is a dream relic that has allowed the dreams of others to infest his own including a Face Stealer, an aberrant creature made of black light that seeks to experience all things by taking them from others eg. there faces's.
This creature is less a boss and more an entity that the party encounters every now and again. Its goal is to take the faces of the three aspects of the owner of the castle that resist it called John, Cenn and Lake each named after the owner, John Cenn Lake, in order to take his face as a whole. Right now the party doesn't know this and think its some sort of time thing, lol as if I would give a level 4 party a time quest.

What I need is your help balancing, I don't know if this creature is overpowered but I still want to be very difficult to defeat. The party may run every time they encounter it because the first time it was encountered it was on the material plain which means it was invincible see unimaginable, but I still want it to be an encounter they are hard pressed to win if they just find it and don't have a plan.
Any opinions would be great.

It wears its masks on its chest, the creature lacking a head, that it is currently using and the others are worn as if they were attached to a belt around the waist.

Tactics
Its tactics are simple it teleports around each turn striking at enemies depending on the threat they pose to it and will even attempt to undermine strategies used against it like engaging with the tank as a distraction and instead going for the warlock that is blasting away from behind. When it finds an "interesting" target it will use collect to grab the target and steal its face avoiding any interference.
