“The machine does not isolate man from the great problems of nature but plunges him more deeply into them.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupery

From September 28th to October 4th or so, dust off all your old Victorian clothing and grab your Sky-hook; it's time for Steampunk Week! This week is for showing, requesting and discussing avatars for Steampunk week, which was just recently elected official next theme week in the Playground.

If you have a creative twist on the theme, that's fantastic!

Have fun!

Its a shame my steampunk campaign setting is no where near a point to show off.

Well, I need ideas or inspiration for an avatar. Something to do with stringed instruments. Are there any iconic steampunk musician things that I can draw inspiration from?

Hmm....This intrigues me. I must consult with Ceika. :smallwink:

Can someone make me a white haired, black robed, tophatted boy with a monocle. Also, could he be swingig a pocketwatch in his hand

Wait, I was not intending on participating this time as my profile is under construction. X.x
Owells. I suppose I technically am by default?

Well, hopefully these help, but they are a few google image links of Steampunk musicians. For inspiration. Hopefully it is a decent enough range of looks.
Abney Park (http://www.google.com/search?q=Abney+Park&tbm=isch)
Steam Powered Giraffe (http://www.google.com/search?q=Steam+Powered+Giraffe&tbm=isch)
Professor Elemental (http://www.google.com/search?q=Professor+Elemental&tbm=isch)

Perhaps you have heard of Panic at the Disco (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOgpdp3lP8M)? (YouTube link)

Maybe you want to add some very useful (not really) mechanisms to your guitars?

Would playing the fiddle in a rowdy tavern inspire you? Playing the violin to entertain house guests?

Hopefully some of this rambling was of use to you...

Actually, that's really helpful.

Thanks. Should finish an idea soon.

I haven't changed my avatar since victorian week, so it kinda feels like things are starting to come full circle. I'm torn between sticking some gears on it, or just leaving it as is, and changing my avatar after the week. :smallwink:

somehow i missed this thread until just now :smalleek:

would someone be able to make an avatar for me?

i'd like my current avatar wearing either his cloak (hood down) [located in sig], or his casual clothes (probably modified to look more related to the theme) [current avatar]. with aviator goggles. and a steampunk-y keyblade (single or dual wield)

thanks in advance

I changed his coat to look a bit more Victorian and I admit I recycled the goggles I'd made for my toon. Does that work for you?

I know this is not going to be easy, but can someone make a steampunk-ified version of my current avatar? Y'know, using steam- or clock-tech as a theme instead of magic. It should be identifiably the same person, but it doesn't have to be in the same pose. However, the table should still be in the picture somewhere.

Is this a request thread too? If so,

Is there anyone willing to do a steampunk stormtrooper?

Thank you for that awesome avatar. As I looked at it, I realized one thing. It has no gears...

Could you by any chance at a misty looking grayish/black gear or set of gears in the background?

From that choice of song, kpenguin seems to be suggesting that gears should not be added for purely decorative reasons, and instead should serve some purpose. I don't mean to call anyone out specifically, but I am interested in people's opinions on the subject.

Is Steampunk an aesthetic? An ethos? A genre with some associated symbols? Inquiring minds want to know!

Also, I wanted to contribute to the conversation rather than just ask for an avatar. Which I would also like to do. If anyone feels like making a steampunky uniformed Mindflayer.

I suppose it comes down to personal preference. Personally, I'd rather the gears served a purpose. :smallwink:

Hmmm, I never thought about it.

In SciFi dragons are too big to fly. In fantasy, dragons have wings, and magic allows them to fly. In Steampunk, dragons have wings, but are too big to fly on their own, so you make a balloon powered bicycle so your dragon can fly.

Well, Steampunk is and always will be my favorite genre of anythign EVAR, so by chance could kind soul take upon themselves to make me a steampunk avatar? Anything incorporating my username and steampunk aesthetic would be great. So, a Steampunk D20, Dragon, both, etc.

I'll do it! I love steampunk, and I just recently made a standard dragon I can use for this. I'll have it up by the end of the day. ^.^

It doesn't work as well in avatar size as I would like, but there's only so much tweaking you can do to make a dragon smaller, and enough of the details show for it to still look good... right?

Still not great at knowing steampunk style stuff, and not great at color coordination, but whatever.

The monocle and the boot gear thingies are slightly based on an avatar someone made for me waaay back the previous time there was a Steampunk Week. Still have the link in the signature.

Also still with the ice wings from last theme week to make things difficult for Character!Cly because I can.

Made it most of the week, but it's time to change the avatar again. I'll miss the steampunk-android logo, but it's time to move on. I've only had 5 avatars since I joined nearly 10 years ago and this will be number 6: one shiny, new avatar now in fiery rune and sleek black on white flavors. I think I'll go for the sleek one.
