View Full Version : [Week 8] Which is the Playground's favorite monster?! - Choose your form, already!

Here is the point: We all put here our favorite creature/monster, and then at the end of each day "this" post will be updated with a table containing which creature has been selected and how many people do love it. At the end of the week we will see which monster is your favorite of the selected type or subtype. Every type and subtype will be randomly selected (by me, or at the forum dice, taking suggestions from you, fellow playgrounders,) or it could be in order, we'll see if this gets crowded enough. Remember that this isn't a competition, it is just a little game, so don't try to convince others to change their choices as they have their favorite monsters as you have yours. I'm not planning to show every nickname, so I want to order it from books/sources where they are found, also I will make a top 5 if we reach enough votes.

This week type/subtype is:

Shapechanger Subtype!

My vote: For my vote, Changelings, Tsochar and Mimics steal my heart. There are more, but I'll keep it at 3. Changelings are of my favorite player race of all time, their posibilities are endless :). Mimics are a fun addition to DMs, because of their ability to be doors, chests, beds, and else. Tsochar, as aberrations, I love them.

The date to finish the count will be Monday, September 15th; from that point on, no vote will be added to the popularity table, but feel free to keep commenting your favorites.

The sources you can use to pick your favorite are on the list below, also if you have more than one favorite, don't hesitate to show it to us! No creature whose entry wasn't originally of the selected type is allowed (for example: if the week's monster type is: Dragon, no Dragonwrought Kobold is available, just creatures with the Dragon type as their base creature are allowed, in this case; DW Kobold got it fom a feat.) At the same time, no creatures that obtained their subtype are allowed to be chosen (for example, Dragonblood subtype week, no dragonborn human is allowed, because human wasn't originally intended to have dragonblood subtype, but its subtype is "dragonblood" because of the Dragonborn template; however Silverbrow human is allowed because its original subtype IS dragonblood.) Also, when a creature is based on a template (such as the Lich, the Vampire, or the Zombie) the template is allowed to be selected as your vote; however, you cannot specify a creature with its own entry adding an alien template. TL;DR: You can select the Skeleton Creature as your favorite Undead, but not a T-Rex Skeleton (using two creatures.)

Changelings for sure, with Tibbits as runner-up. The early entry to Warshaper is wonderful and who doesn't like being someone who can be anybody? There are also wonderful stories about Changeling Chameleons "dying" and being "recruited" in a completely different role as a completely different person.

Changelings are one of my favourite races ever, the change shape ability is just so cool and they have loads of flavourful and interesting mechanical options. Tibbits are also awesome because who doesn't want to play a werecat and also because of the kitty cat of pure evil and slaughter build.

For me, it's tibbits or changelings. A hard call, but i'd say Changelings.

I would vote succubus, since i think they really should have the shapechanger subtype, but since I cant, I'm instead going to vote for tibbits because daaawwww

I rather enjoy Mindflayers, myself. Mind blast!

Maurezhi (Fiend folio) totally desserve this subtype, so do Fey'ris (Monsters of faerϋn), but both haven't it...

Lycanthropes

I particularly enjoy building characters off of the werebear, wererat, and werewolf subtypes of lycanthrope (although I would enjoy the last more if its alignment was lawful neutral, or just straight neutral, like it should be.)

I will second changelings and Tibbits as other favorites of mine

I'm oddly a fan of wererats. They're probably the least powerful of the lycanthropes so it's really a flavor thing. I just like the (yes, cliche) idea of a thieves guild of wererats in the shady part of town and turning into a rat more for stealth reasons than for combat. My main PC at the moment is a ratfolk witch; hence my avatar.

Definitely Changelings. They're my favorite D&D race. After that, Lycanthropes and Tibbits.

Hagunemnons, a.k.a. proteans.Nice infinite variety of shapes, combined with the change being a free action, makes them the most exemplary shapechangers. Their also one of my favorite types of shapechangers, to boot (amorphic "change-shape because no form is my own", not this pansy "oh, I can change, but I do have a natural self"), with that fluff backed up by having the best regeneration in the game.

Lycanthropes in general, Werewolves in particular. So my vote goes to Werewolves!
