Interspecies lesbian bondage relationship.

... huh.

It's how I roll. I was originally going to make it a same sex male interspecies bondage relationship, but I had the twin problems of 1. The Princess kidnapped by a dragon is the classic image in the mind of people, and making the character male might have undermined my main subversion, and 2. Pretty much every picture I found of the menfolk in a similar situation was full rooster visible (nudity was also a problem with the ladies, but less of one, oddly).

I figure it will be fun to watch longterm who has more problem with "dating a dragon" vs "girlfriend." I plan to laugh angrily regardless.

It's even true, considering that Shades started life as a crappy Twilight AU fic until the author decided to change the names and nothing else and then sell it to make a profit.

Meyer could have sued and won, is what I've been hearing.

If you really think about it, almost every story is more interesting/amusing when you assume at least one individual involved was a dragon.

In all honesty, replacing one of my parents with a dragon in that visual is SLIGHTLY better than the alternative. My parents are gross. Though, a dragon just like... watching? That's about a thousand times worse.
Yeah, I'm gonna go swap this brain for a new one now. It's never getting clean.

My parents are cool. Though I'm not sure who'd be the dragon. Either my father in full early seventies hippie regalia (there's so many hilarious pictures of him in long hair, pink sunglasses and flower shirts) or my mother in early rock leathers and punk hair. Both work.

By all means be amused; you're quite close.

The dragon is my twin sister and the princess is the fundie cheerleader she shacked up with our sophomore year of college. Though I suppose after 23 years of continuous cohabitation, shacked up don't really cover it.

Well, Lana describes herself as "butch" and pretty much endorses the connotations that come with that label. And she's got a real temper. Close enough to dragon for humanoid purposes. *I'm* not going to argue; I've long since learned discretion is the better part of valor. Would you? :)

I have the blanks for Philosoflumph and Bilbo in the tumblr posts I first used them. Using the search for philosoflumph and bilbo should show them.

And I am currently usually pretty up to date with uploading, though I often skip anything that directly referrs to the talking here, as those wouldn't make any sense out of context.

It's a chart showing what various mythical creatures are "made of". For instance, a Centaur is a mix between a human and a horse. Pegasus and Hippogryph are both horse-bird hybrids. Minotaur is human-bull. The main blobs are the source creatures, and the overlap lists the various creatures resulting from that mix.

Whoops, I meant to select the Natural 1 on the guy that was reduced to 1 HP.

That... is major Game of Thrones spoilers. Read at your own risk:

The guy in the second panel is Oberyn Martel, who has just trounced Gregor "the Mountain" Clegane (http://www.geeksofdoom.com/GoD/img/2014/06/gregor-clegane-the-mountain-halfthor-bjornsson.jpg) in a trial by combat. The Mountain was chosen to fight on behalf of the prosecution because, as you might guess by looking at him, he's generally considered in-universe to be the second-greatest swordsman on the continent. Oberyn volunteered to fight for the defense because the Mountain is a horrible person who raped and murdered Oberyn's older sister and her children during the civil war that the series starts (IIRC) ten years after.

Anyways, as I was saying, Oberyn gives the Mountain a beatdown of epic proportions... and then, instead of finishing him off, starts circling him trying to taunt him into confessing to the above crime in front of the shocked crowd... which goes about as well as suggested by the third panel. Specifically, he eventually steps just a little too close to the lying-on-his-back-but-still-quite-alive Mountain, who trips him, rolls on top of him, and demonstrates precisely why he (the Mountain) is played by the current Strongest Man in Europe.
EDIT: Nat-1'ed my Spot check.

To me, what makes the series of images even funnier is that that is exactly the kind of thing Gygax would do to screw with his players.

Gygax was actually kind of a softy. If rumors are true, he didn't really kill anyone all that often and he wrote tomb of horrors specifically because people commented how easy-going and no lethal his games were.

I've never been able to wrap my head around that 'it's eating all our elephants' creature. First off, it looks insectoid, right? So...how did it get so big? How does it support it's own massive weight with no skeletal structure? How does it /fly/ with only one set of very fragile looking wings? What on earth are those crazy back leg/claw/fin/wthf things? Why does it have a reptilian head and an insect body? Why are its primary grasping appendages /behind/ the crazy mantis arms? Why does it have both?! What the hell is it ambushing that it cant pick up and fly away with? WHY IS IT SPIKED!? WHAT EATS THAT CREATURE?!

It's possible those spikes are to fend off competitors for mates.

Evolution is not inherently logical. Features do not evolve for any one specific reason, there is no mind behind it. They simply show up via mutation and, if the creatures that carry those features happen to survive, they are passed on. The spikes seem to aid the creature's survival in some way, but we only assign explanations, evolution does not provide them. Perhaps the spikes are involved in a threat display, or attracting mates, or fending off rivals, or grooming, or perception, or serve some other function we cannot deduce from this picture alone, or even a combination of functions.
Of course, the obvious possibility might well be the correct one. There's always a bigger fish.
Or maybe a wizard did it.

I would make a demotivator for taxes, but I have no idea how to even start searching for that image.

Evolution doesn't have to provide function at all. A trait doesn't have to be useful to be kept, it just has to not be a bigger disadvantage than advantage. Meaning a trait whitout any advantage can be kept as long as it has no disadvantage either. So these spikes might be there for no reason whatsoever, as long as the creature isn't having any problem because of them, they'll stay.

That extra baby tooth in between the "two front teeth" that doesn't do anything and does';t get replaced when you lose it(I had to get mine pulled.) And that's just the stuff that doesn't do anything or has negligible effect on the body.

there's all kinds of weird crap in the digestive tract alone that makes no sense or is horribly inefficient for it's intended purposes.

Or that fact that human evolution progresses at a much slower rate than we change the environment-we're built for small tribal environments where the two biggest stressors are "make sure family has enough meat for winter" and "try not to get eaten by that pride of lions" and that really screws us up in a "civilized" environment.

After uploading the image to Imgur, look on the right hand side of the image. There should he a selection of options of ways to link to the image, like so:

http://i.imgur.com/Frho4Dg.png

Copy the code from the BBCode (Message Boards and Forums) and copy it into the body of the message here. If you just copy the URL at the top and try to put it into an [ img ] tag, it won't work, because the base URL is not seen as an image. That said, you can take that base URL and add ".jpg" to the end of it and it should be directed straight to the image, allowing you to put it in an [ img ] tag.

I love Lovecraft, good stuff. Honestly its the horror of not understanding, of not being able to understand. Add in the fact that most of those horrors are virtually unkillable and you have something that scares people, not when they read it but when they lie awake in bed later that night thinking about it. Thats how Lovecraft does horror.

Also Spiders *shudders* but only the little ones, big ones im less afraid of, its kinda weird.

Yeah, I think what makes Lovecraft scary, even to this day, isn't the unknown specifically, rather, the unknowableness of the rest of the universe. Which, as progress marches on, actually becomes scarier as we do think that we have only scratched the surface of the universe, and the Mi-Go, and Elder Things, and Great Old Ones are still waiting for first contact, which is something we likely won't survive.

Eh, I never found that to be of any significant horror. There was life before, life will continue after you're gone, and even when we're all gone, the planets will keep on turning. This is no great surprise or horror.

And when you grow up with that as fact, cool.

Lovecraft grew up in a universe designed by a comforting loving figure to handle his needs. Having that stripped away is frightening. It's the same anxiety as being on your own for the first time, magnified.

I find it worrying that people no longer feel existential horror. It seems like they must have something wrong with them, to look at the terrifying vastness of Creation and the mystery that is life and death and just go 'meh.'

Also, close-ups of spider faces are nightmarish.

Why should that horrify me? There's an infinite universe to serve as canvas to my brush, and no limits upon my arts. I, and indeed all humanity, will write my own destiny, find my own meaning where I can, and together, there is nothing we cannot accomplish in time.

When you realize, deep down, that you are the Old Ones who come and destroy the known world, not through malice or even attention, but through your mere presence in an ecosystem, it becomes rather difficult to fear them. When you look at it that way, you realize that it's just eldritch abominations all the way down, that you are both a universe unto yourself and utterly significant to the world beyond, and you look down into your beverage container, shrug, and continue on with your daily life. You can't help that uncounted microbiomes in your gut will live or die based on your choice of drink, nor that the sidewalk that you're standing was an apocalypse to that which was there before, nor that the sun will swallow the earth in the inexorable passage of time. It's just the natural order of things. Why be scared of it?

Well existential horror has the same issue as existential philosophy, and ironically it's also what can make them compelling: there's nothing you can really do about it.

It doesn't matter if you fight c'thulhu, because he'll survive and bring the end times anyway. It doesn't matter if you run from c'thulhu because he'll survive and bring the end times anyway. It doesn't matter if you try to placate him, or hide from him or even ignore him, because he'll survive and bring the end times anyway. The fact there's nothing humanly possible we can do to change that, there's little point worrying about it because whether you do or do not fear it has no effect on any level: it'll still happen. In a weird way, it makes us think the comic horror itself doesn't matter, because we can't interact with it much at all.

On top of that, "your inevitable demise" has a few issues in being horrific. For one, if there's nothing you can do to change the outcome it's a bit railroad, and for two, it can make empathy more difficult, as "He's gonna die anyway, who cares?"

Plus, to me at least, saying something is indescribably horrific doesn't automatically make me try to think of something indescribable: it makes me think "oh, the author's too lazy to describe it properly. Yawn :smallsigh:" At least try to describe how indecipherable it is, like in this card. (http://sales.starcitygames.com/cardsearch.php?singlesearch=Nemesis+of+Reason)

H.P. Lovecraft, meet N.D. Tyson. Fear the loss of Meaning, or wonder at the new Knowing.

To be fair, our generations grew up with the greater volumes of knowledge about the scale and workings of the universe that were being first published or becoming broadly known in Phil's time. Imagine if he had been writing before cell theory became common knowledge? All these individual... things making up your body, unknowing and uncaring of your own wants or needs, just waiting to rebel at their purpose and take over. Or more frighteningly a creature which is just a single piece of a larger entity (connected by long tentacles, as extradimensional space wasn't an idea at that period) killing or destroying things as its job while the superbeast is just passing by. Or imagine if he was more versed in the uncertainties of subatomic phenomena. We might have gotten Weeping Angels 80 years earlier.

Quoting Cracked.com on the topic:

It's not the appearance of the monsters in his stories, it's the reality of them, the fact that they exist. Their existence alone proves that humanity is doomed and that all our hopes and dreams are stupid. Running into one of Lovecraft's Elder Gods is like finding a strange pair of underwear in your bed and realizing that your spouse is cheating on you. It's not the underwear itself that's stabbing you in the heart; it's the betrayal it represents. Lovecraft's monsters are proof to the protagonist that the universe is not benevolent. Finding strange underwear might mean that your spouse never loved you; stumbling upon a Lovecraft creature means that God never loved you.

To attempt to refine these statements, finding out that, if things continue as they are, the universe will render humanity a tiny blip in the charts of physical existence doesn't seem such a big deal to me.

In terms of space:
People have known that the Earth was tiny in comparison to the space it moves through, and the sun in the sky since Newton or earlier. It seems improbable that Lovecraft was getting quite so much millage out of the vastness of space. I suppose that discovering that the life-bringing warmth of the sun is hardly a unique warmth could be scary, much as a child who sees the careful tended fireplace that drives off their shivers in the bitter cold of winter might be somewhat taken aback to know that their are several fireplaces in their home (in rooms they were previously carefully kept out of), all of which are also kept burning. I don't pretend to be a psychologist, but I actually doubt that that is the problem since a little thought reveals that the care need not be less, only the skill and power to tend millions of "fires" all the greater. Still, "it came from beyond the stars" is a Lovecraft concept (whether original or not), so perhaps there is something to it.

In terms of time:
I submit that it is only when and if one accepts the absence of an immortal soul that is equal or greater in longevity to the physical universe that things get spooky.

Yep.

Lovecraft had a pretty good sense of humor about his own writing skills - his short story "The Unnameable" opens with the narrator (a very obvious stand-in for H.P. himself) being chided for a friend for his overuse of words like 'undescribable', 'unnameable', and so on. (Of course, they then run into something that really IS unnameable...)

Yup. Is there anything setting-related that 4e didn't **** up?

If I remember correctly those are Red Wizard renegades. In 4e Thay was taken over by Szass Tam, and while the Red Wizards still exist, those that aren't undead are essentially puppets.

Those folks are from an adventure involving a bunch of renegade Red wizards who are still being involved with the whole magic item trade thing. I suppose given that they're renegades still being hunted down by Szass's cronies, I would assume that hair was considered more convenient for disguise purposes. A red robe gives them brand recognition but can still be thrown on and off whenever they need to blend in. Shaving your head and tattooing it is far more permanent.

However you are still correct, 4e screwed that to the nine hells and back, because lord knows there's nothing more original than another area full of dangerous undead. (which is why 4e Forgotten realms added two new ones, Thay and Nethril with its shades.) Plus shoe-horning the new magic system is why the no shaved head thing works. (Any Red Wizard worth their salt who felt the strange need to be incognito, would just prepare a disguise self spell instead.)

To be fair though, Forgotten Realms came out a lot worse than some of the other settings. Mainly because they had to change so much to make the new system make sense. (Like that god-damned spellplague to explain the changes to magic.)

Eberron worked pretty well. In the words of the creator of the setting, many of the elements of 4e (like simplification of races, and ritual magic separate from wizard spellcasting). Dark Sun also wasn't bad. 4e could bring psionics more effectively into the rest of the rules. And because of the expansion of healing magic to other classes, they didn't have to make up weirdness to explain how templars and elemental priests get their healing powers so that parties would still be balanced.

The title was getting rather squashed as it was. I was thinking of adding Searing, Fiery and Blistering, as that would (slightly) alleviate the Fire Immunity issue while adding a bit more damage to boot, but that would have made the title all but unreadable.

EDIT: Reading a discussion on it, someone suggested adding Snowcasting/Flash Frost on top of Searing, just to have an icy-hot spell that bypasses immunities from hot and cold. Oh, and also Explosive (can't believe I forgot that). Could probably sprinkle in a few other Metamagics just to make it truly ridiculous.

By RAW, Energy Substitution can't be used with sonic: only fire, acid, cold, and electricity.

Since the damage types correspond to Fire, Earth, Water, and Wind elementals, respectively, and the aforementioned energy types with ES are prerequisites for turning into that type of Elemental with the Elemental Savant prestige class, this was probably the intention of the feat.

A shame, since Sonic is essentially damage via vibration, and that means you can't turn into a Vibration Elemental.

Zephyr is a type of wind, so a zephyr hound seems like some sort of wind dog.

My first encounter with zephyr is that it was the name of a local baseball team here in colorado decades ago.

My dad's company softball team was called 'Fugawe' which I believe is also a wind related word.

Necroticplague got it right.
Pack monsters that never sleep, and cannot be stealth'd by, very fast and can see long distances in all levels of light. They can claw and bite to attack as well as breath their various element for an AoE damage spell. Varieties: clear, light, dark, fire, energy, water, cold, air, vibration, impact, earth, gravity, plasma, nexus, nether, aether, chaos and time. The elements that they breathe are directly related to type (in order): poison(and invisible), light, darkness, fire, lightning, acid, cold, super poison, sound, force/shards, shards only, force/literally gravity, fire AND plasma, nexus, nether, ALLLLLLL types, disenchant and chaos, and literally time. Oh and what they breath, they are immune to.

They are everyone's least favorite monster.

Meh... details. You see dark ghostly spellcasters infused with necrotic shadow energy to achieve immortality through the sacrifice of their souls, I see a lich mixed with a ghost with a darkness fetish.

Sure they're technically different, but they're functionally the same in a campaign, a really sinister kingdom full of spellcasters that have sacrificed their humanity for dark power, likely with an army of the dead.

Only difference is Thay has more bones and rotting flesh, Nethril has ghosts.

But Netheril doesn't have ghosts (well, not anything too far out of the usual amount) nor does it employ armies of undead. The population is still largely alive and still human, unlike in Thay. There is an upswing of shadow-infused people, but that would make them Outsiders(Native) under 3rd Edition rules.
