But Netheril doesn't have ghosts (well, not anything too far out of the usual amount) nor does it employ armies of undead. The population is still largely alive and still human, unlike in Thay. There is an upswing of shadow-infused people, but that would make them Outsiders(Native) under 3rd Edition rules.

Yes, yes. All I'm saying is that for thematic purposes most people would call an immortal spellcaster that sacrificed their soul to become a ghostly shade of their former self undead. Undead Empire, Shade Empire, potato, poh-tah-toe. I'm not talking about RAW, I'm talking about the themes present are still largely the same regardless of whether they're technically undead or not. Just like most PC's will consider an Ogre Kingdom and a Troll kingdom to be largely a matter of whether or not they pack fire and acid or not. Technically they're different creatures that don't even look similar, thematically you can count on them being big brutish and fairly dumb, just that one regenerates.

Similarly you can count on both Undead and Shade Empires to be warlike, led by lots of evil spellcasters, and likely creating dark unliving abominations infused with necrotic energy. The only difference for the PCs is that Thay has lots of physical undead (so they'll probably want to pack different weapon types to avoid resistances) and Nethril will require ghost touch weapons for all the ethereal enemies. Heck in 4e a cleric is nearly as useful for either considering that both are typically weak to radiant damage.

Bottom line, it doesn't matter if they're technically different, the PC's will still regard them as nearly the same, and worse generic. Heck at least Nethril was fairly original by replacing the standard zombie hordes with shades, Thay used to be evil human magic selling, slave owning, scheming wizards, and the spellplague made it into another generic zombie wasteland. That's the point I'm making, it gets overdone, especially when you replace something as cool as Thay with something as generic with another straight undead kingdom, when you've already added a thematically similar (but with a nice twist) shade empire already.

Sorry to say this, but in the past weeks this thread has so often been spammed by people arguing over if a joke is correct by RAW or canon.

So, shut up!

Send PMs or open another thread, but this really is not the place to tell other people that their jokes are incorrect and start long arguments about them.

Tinker gnomes are fantastic. And they get even better in Spelljammer, where all their hare-brained bat-guano-insane contraptions actually work since they're away from the influence of Reorx's curse. They're still insane, but they work.

Three words: Giant Space Hamsters.

Four words: Miniature Giant Space Hamster.

Go for the eyes!

Edit: As an aside, Spelljammer tinker gnomes really did breed those. Completely indistinguishable from ordinary hamsters, but they're in the books. As is Wooly Rupert, the dreaded Tyrannohamstersaurus Rex, of whom all gnomes live in fear.

See Cluedrew's comment. Because they're tinker gnomes. They're not known for such trifling things as "logic," "rationality," or "common sense." Quite the opposite, really.

Riker is Number One, Three is the *Tri*wizard Tournament, I don't really get four either, and Elevenses is a hobbitish meal.

EDIT: According to google, Four Kings and Queens is a reference to 'The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe' which would explain why I didn't get it. Not a fan of C. S. Lewis.

You could alternatively go with "Four Kings, and Four Queens, in a card deck".

But given the font, and the context, the Lewis reference is what's intended.

What the hell is that thing in Spiders demotivator?

That, my friend, is a Chwidencha. Also known as spider leg horrors, for hopefully obvious reasons.

Each of them used to be a drow, who appear to have a penchant for being turned into inhumanoid forms.

If Lolth thinks high level drow turn out to be a total failures and useless for her purposes, she turns them into various types of spider creatures that still could have some uses for her schemes. Driders are one type, chwidencha another.

It was the Secret Service and Steve Jackson Games, while they were working on GURPS Cyberpunk, back in 1990. The full story has a permanent home on the SJ Games page here (http://www.sjgames.com/SS/). But fear not; there is a happy ending: "The one bright spot in this whole affair was the creation of the Electronic Frontier Foundation."

Is this rule 34 of roleplaying? If a picture exists, somewhere someone plays a character based on it?

If not, it should be. Especially considering some of the truly weird pictures out there.

This could be food for yet another picture thread. Posting weird ass pictures and having a challenge on how can come up with the most sane (sanest?) concept for it.

I considered starting a collection of hilariously stupid character outfits a while ago, but I think it would probably attract mostly the kind of people I would want to mock, who actually like that stuff.

True that. We really should come up with a playable race for octopus people. that are not Illithids. Which is mildly more plausible than most races: octopi are some of the most intelligent animals on the planet, and one of the most likely candidates for uplifting.

Aboleth are basically "amphibious squidfish-people who are all schoolgirlshermaphrodites.
Assuming, of course, that "school(noun)" is meant to mean "(same noun) that is learning something at an organized facility."
That's close enough, right?

There's a browser game I play called Fallen London. It's a sort of Victorian Lovecraft setting with a rather comedic bent despite the horrific elements. As such they have a race of Squid-like Cthulhu humanoids called Rubbery Men.

They're actually fairly friendly for mini-Cthulhus, mainly they trade in strange amber they produce with their bodily fluids. But they're also considered unsightly in London society, so they're an oppressed minority.

Also they speak funny. "Threrrithree... Othathrooth!"

Rubbery men are the best. I'm hoping to unlock Flute Street eventually :D

Eldan

I also love their deeper background, once you have it puzzled together from Flute street, some other FL content (including at least one halloween vision, I think) and potentially also some Sunless Sea.

Because fleshcrafting aliens!

They are the spawn of the flukes, gigantic sea-urchin like creatures that came to Earth from another planet and now live in a subterranean ocean under the world. At least one strain of the flukes desperately want to communicate with humans, so they use their mastery over flesh to shame something as close as they can to a human and a humanlike mind, which is the rubbery men. Cephalopodian things, bonelessly flopping around in human suits. They also trade amber with humans, for its magical properties of storing vital essences, which they need for their fleshcrafting. Give it to humans, take it back when it's nice and warm, make more rubberies.

This is their standard look:
http://www.thesecretknots.com/imagenes/rubbery-man-card-760px.jpg

But I prefer the one you can hire as an officer for your ship:

... I have briefly considered a race of amphibious Squid People... Never did anything with it for fear of certain people going "Keep it away from Schoolgirls"

Tentacles: What self respecting [Squid Person] would do that to a human school girl!?
Human: No I get it, you are not all bad people.
Tentacles: That too and it would be all bony and awkward and they aren't even cute.
Human: ...Right, beauty standards.

Really, I'm not sure what a squid person would find attractive, but humans would probably have too many bones, not enough limbs, pasty skin (for octopus folk the fact the skin doesn't change colour might be a turn off) and way to many hard edges in their appearance. So really the Squid People wouldn't care.

The question becomes a little bit weird once polymorph is involved. If attraction is part of your physical wiring than being polymorph could change what you're attracted to. Couple that with a higher level attraction, probably unaffected by polymorph and it makes a little bit more sense.

Actually, have you read Animorphs? One of the problems for the main characters was overcoming the instincts of the base animals. There was even one book where one of the characters had a crush on a hawk because he was in a hawk body. However it never went beyond that.

In the general case however, where no magic is involved... yes I agree. Unless the parent races are really close.

This has often been an annoyance with prophecies for me. People often interpret that anything other than what they're fated to die from is automatically ineffective. With prophecies you have to think of it less like an immunity superpower and more like actual fate. Macbeth didn't become immune to all men born from women, the witches just know that it's someone outside of that category that does him in, and then he makes the rest of the assumption. The Witch-King wasn't immune to being killed by living men, the prophecy just knew it would be a woman that killed him.

Fate isn't a shield, fate is a spoiler about what happens at the end of the movie. The Witch King wouldn't die from any woman you threw against him, he would die from Eowyn at that time and place (the prophecy only spoiled that it wouldn't be a man that did it.) Similarly Harry Potter wasn't the key to killing Voldemort because he was the prophesied chosen one, but because he was the one essentially immune to Voldemort's curses due to the love magic and the Horcrux connection, which is why he was the chosen one.

In this case it's even more outside of these bonds, because in all likelihood that boast wasn't a prophecy, it was just a bad-ass boast about his own supposed invulnerability. When he was originally around, there was no weapon, forged or otherwise that could harm him. Of course since forged weapons (iron) were likely the strongest of his time, he likely found it expedient to just boast "No weapon forged can harm me" rather than "No weapon that has ever been created currently in our time period can harm me."

I'm kinda forced to wonder, who's wording these prophecies? Like, do they come from some sort of higher power that just like messing with people? Or are fortune tellers inherently mischievous/overly poetic?

Prophecies get even worse when characters actively know and prepare for them. Unless the prophecy is describing an actual weakness of the foe (example: Harry Potter is the chosen one because of his status as a horcrux giving him a connection to Voldemort. If he was the chosen one solely because of the whole born from enemies of the dark lord, than it would have been entirely fate-driven) Preparing for a prophecy only makes it self-fulfilling, since the means you defeat them by become subservient to the fact that you happen to be using those means when you defeat them, just as the prophecy foretold.

Best example I can think of is in Avatar the Last Airbender, with the Fortune-teller village. A villager is prophesied to meet his true love while wearing a certain pair of shoes. Naturally he then wears these shoes everywhere, self-fulfilling the prophesy, since every future interaction he has with another person will be while wearing those shoes

That's why it really only takes someone to get really defiant against fate for the prophecy plot to get contrived. Imagine if Macbeth had just suddenly decided to screw the prophecy and stab himself, either the plot becomes contrived and fate becomes a literal plot shield to prevent his death, or it all falls apart when Macbeth dies by the hand of a man born from women.

Bottom Line is: Prophecies only work in narratives, and only when handled carefully. Never try it in an actual RPG, or I guarantee that a player will create a fate paradox just to break fate. End result will either be the destruction of the plot or railroading to the extreme.

The thing to remember about those classic prophecies is that there was a very different world view in those cultures. Modern society is fiercely independent and individualistic, to the point where we do have people that are willing to poke and prod at a prophecy until it falls apart. Among the ancient Greeks that's called Hubris, and it's generally shown that trying to poke at the prophecy just ends up fulfilling it. Meanwhile the Norse also had a strong sense of fate and the wyrd, to the point where even the gods were subservient to it, trying to defy something like that is about as pointless as trying to fall up, you're just going to end up hurting yourself.

It doesn't make much sense from the skeptical modern viewpoint, but that sort of almost fatalistic attitude is something that defined many of those myths. Fate is fate, and if fate told you what to do, you'll do it unless you want worse things to happen.

Self-fulfilling prophecies can be fun though. Harry Potter is an example - it could've been Neville, but Voldemort thought it would be Harry, so he accidentally choose Harry.

Not sure why I like them when I'm highly individualistic. Maybe because I like to laugh at the silly villians.

It is how prophecy works they have to be vague they work on an idea. Sure you can explain in exasperating detail what will happen but then the person will force it not to happen at which point it either causes the events(maybe earlier maybe just causes them period all depends)
Or it can force a specific narrative to unravel, etc.

The problem is for a prophecy to work they have to either be glimpses of a future or fate.
Personally I want to ruin a game where the person who performs a future reading gives a combination of vague answer and cryptic warning but has no ability and is only telling the person what there failings are or probably will be

Not a poster but a quote:

“It’s a complex issue,” Jake admitted. “But think of the course of the future as, oh, flowing water. If you know the lay of the land, you can make a good guess where it’s going. The most interesting prophecies, in my opinion, are the ones were you could prevent it, but you're force to choose something you want more. Such as a witch saying the holy temple will fall, so you dedicate your life to it's defense, but when the hordes of heretics come, they put your village and everyone you love in harms way, so you abandon you post to save them, thus dooming the temple.

Also, I can't believe all the tax cuts that have been happening here.

Agreed. That's one of the things that they did in Eberron. There's a draconic prophecy that supposedly influences the entirety of existence, and its signs are everywhere. Of course very few can actually make any sense of it, and it is very rarely an absolute thing.

Generally what it describes is more like a guidebook for manipulating the course of events. Some things will occur if left unaltered, but most people that actually put any time in understanding the prophecy look for things that will allow them to change things. They want a prince dead so their preferred successor can become the heir, prophecy says that if this particular person get their hands on this particular sword than the prince will die before his next birthday.

It's a much better prophecy for rpgs because it requires action. In an rpg, if you're prophesied to save the world the obvious course of action is to do whatever you want since fate says that's going to save the world anyway. It encourages inaction. This kind of prophecy instead says, you will save the world, if you do this, that encourages action and still leaves room for consequences, since failure is still a distinct possibility.

Prophecies can only be if there is no free will, and without free will there is no point to RPGs.

I like prophecies. They're bread and butter of fantasy storytelling for me. And they're the main points of some of my favorite RPGs, the Elder Scrolls games. The protagonist is always the prophecised hero bound to save the world. If the individual incarnation takes action is up to the player but in the grand scheme of things the player is always considered to complete the main quest for the purposes of the following games.

Now you could say I like cheap and easy set up sandbox games and you would probably be right. But on the other hand using well known tropes and story arcs while keeping them fresh gives us a world where we don't have to make special snowflake character #1241284 to really shine. The Dragonborn will save Skyrim, be it after some agonizing months of dragon attacks where he considers leading the thieves' guild, the dark brotherhood or the companions or as a valiant knight solving the plight of the civil war and the ressurection of Alduin.

This stops railroading and gives the players time and reason to explore the world. I have been in games where the heroes have to hurry from one plot point to the next because the villains seem to be two steps ahead and wasting time only makes matters worse because then you cant even comprehend the next moves of your antagonist anymore let alone predict. I play in several groups. One feels like the villains are always two steps ahead to the point of futility to fight against them. In the second recently finished campaign the villain/misunderstood hero npc told us that he manipulated our every move to make us save the world (and kill millions) to cleanse a god. And in the last one we are far more laid back. We are only looking for an ancient tomb and are crossing evil cultists on the way. The mission target isnt moving, plotting or even turning our plans against us. And I like all three games. And if the DM would not spoonfeed us encounters (and thus XP) it would probably be my favorite.

Rather ironical tl:dr: Sometimes simplicity is key. And prophecies are so cliché that they instantly set up a main story while not insanely pressuring the players.

I think the biggest issue that prophecies bring is that they necessitate a level of rail-roading that can stifle the freedom of rpgs. This even applies in big open world games like Skyrim and the other Elder Scrolls games, they give you plenty of options, but there are still a few basic assumptions, most importantly that you will not die in the course of the quest, and that you will eventually get around to doing the main quest line. These sort of assumptions are largely derived from the fact that you are playing a video game rather than relying on a human game master to create the world.

Take Skyrim, the prophecy claim that a dragonborn will arise and defeat Alduin, but if your character dies than the issue of what happened to the prophecy is glossed over. The game simply ends and you're not shown the repercussions of this death, you simply start over at a save point and keep going like nothing happened. For all intents and purposes in the story, you as the dragonborn never died in the story, and you simply fullfill the prophecy as was intended.

Imagine that you're playing the same way in a pen and paper rpg. You play as the dragonborn with the game master setting you through a campaign that's the same as the video game. Now let's say you die during the course of this game. The Elder Scrolls games don't really have resurrection like some campaign settings, so you simply stay dead. The problem thus arises that the prophecy has fallen apart. The prophecy said the dragonborn will defeat Alduin, that didn't happen though, the dragonborn died in a dungeon somewhere, that means that the prophecy was wrong. How do you proceed from there? If you make another character and keep going, the new character can't win since he's not the dragonborn, or else he's also the dragonborn and the whole chosen one aspect becomes that much cheaper. If you keep on playing this way and doing poorly against enemies before long you have a dozen different dragonborn that have all appeared at roughly the same time and each failed to fulfill the prophecy. The other possibility is you just start the game over at a 'save point' like the game does, and suddenly death has no meaning, you're simply playing the same game until you succeed, it may work in video games but it becomes very boring when trasplanted to pen and paper.

Worse yet what if you simply screw the main storyline altogether. What if in this game you simply do every quest not related to the main storyline and prophecy and then hitch a boat or carriage to another part of the world altogether, sure technically Alduin threatens the entire world, but many players can be capable of such a defiance to rails that the plot falls apart entirely.

To put it simply, prophecies in rpgs aren't completely useless, but they do essentially tell the players that there are rails, and like it or not you will eventually follow them unless you want the entire game to fall apart, it's not as horrible as telling your players that there's nothing else to do except go to the next dungeon but it still is a little too obvious and brings too many issues in regard's to the players control of their characters that I'm rarely interested in using them.

If the Dragonborn was killed, he could just kill Alduin in Sovngarde.

Yeah, but the moment in question is when a call of "Save Us, Kurosaki" is answered by him showing up as full, mindless, evil monster complete with horrifying growling, and proceeding to smash pretty much everything without regard to collateral damage or risk to his friend's lives...

Most heroic? Most powerful and reckless, sure, but from my memories of when I followed Bleach, Sado was undoubtedly the most heroic. Fighting creatures he couldn't see without hesitation, willing to risk his life in a heartbeat because someone is in trouble or simply because his friend is risking himself to save someone, and keeping at it despite being outclassed by most every supernatural entity they come across, just because it's the right thing to do. How is Ichigo more heroic than that?

Literally the entire reason Sado does anything in the series is because he and Ichigo promised to fight for each other.

That's literally the reason he went when they went to Save Rukia.

Ichigo's the one who breaks all the rules in order to do what is right, and the one who risks his life to save people he barely knows, and the one who doesn't hold grudges once he no longer has a quarle with someone else-See, befriending several agents of the soul society mere days after he was part of an invasion force that did significant damage to the Seireitei.

Fairly certain that, before the Soul Society arc, Sado went and risked his life to save Karin without Ichigo being anywhere in the vicinity, went and protected a parakeet with the soul of a human child despite it telling him that a supernatural horror would be trying to kill him for his efforts just to try and save the soul's mother, and that the reason that Sado's involvement in the series is tied to Ichigo is because Ichigo's the only one who knows what's going on. What would Sado know about Rukia's disappearance without Ichigo? How would he know anything about the soul society, Aizen's plans, and everything if he Ichigo or Urahara wasn't asking him to fight with Ichigo the entire time? Aside from that, Sado risks his life to save people he doesn't know, holds no grudges even against people he has a legitimate quarrel with, and doesn't particularly care about the rules Ichigo is breaking because his trust in his friend is strong enough that he knows he's doing what's right, despite whatever the laws say. The plot doesn't revolve around him, but when you get down to it, Chad is the single most heroic character in the show.

The thumb on the hand indicates that we're looking at the front, but then the legs don't make any sense.
No, that's the back, based on the legs and angle on the head. The hands are on backw...

Rakshasa!

Seriously, the coloration on the legs is what's doing it. the lighter coloration on the pants makes the knee of the right (our right) leg look like it's fading into the cloudy fuzz, while the dark, well-colored boot looks closer. Muddy colors and a horribly, horribly awkward body position without any anatomical indicators of a twisting torso.

They will not be continuing on Face/Off.

No, he is clearly facing forward, we're seeing the front, the hand are on the right way. It's just a bad drawing of a near 3 point landing

I'm voting for front. What we're looking at on the rght side of the picture is the front of his thigh and the top of his foot. You can actually see the creases on his shoe where he bends his toes.

Ah, I can see it now. The fact part of his left leg is a lighter grey made me think it was going into the background (which is also a light grey), so it looked like he has his left leg forward, right leg facing backround, and spine that magically rotates 180 to make how his upper body is shaped works.

Can I get a dot of context on that quote?

So, if anyone asks for any clarification or context on any motivator from now on, I vote that the motivator posters refuse to answer unless the question is attached to at least one motivator.

Exaltation in exalted does require a human soul to bond to, obviously.

In Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (the image source), humans and human like life forms have access to Spiral Power, which allows them to force physics to cry in a corner because it's time to be awesome now. The pinnacle of Spiral Power seen in the TV show is the existence of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, a supergalaxy sized robot made from the hopes, dreams, and fighting spirit of the main character.

In the movie adaptation, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is destroyed, and the rest of the cast manifests their own Heaven Piercing super-mechs to jump into the fray and save their comrades. The first two characters to do so are Viral and Nia, pictured in the motivator.

Nia and Viral are the only two protagonists to explicitly lack spiral power. Literally, they were created by people trying to reign in human excess, and have no access to spiral power. They cannot bend reality, they cannot tell the odds to sit down and shut up, they have until this point had to rely on mere superhuman skill to accomplish their goals. But, they generate enough hopes/dreams/fighting spirit to do the impossible, generate spiral power, and kick ass with the best of them against a cosmic threat in that scene. It makes it my favorite scene in the whole thing.

Also, In a game I played several years back, one character was a twilight who built a robot (well, golem) who wanted to be a real boy despite not having a soul. And wanted it hard enough that he managed to get a soul and exalt. So...

My only problem with Death Vigil is that the first comic by Stjepan Sejic i read was Sunstone..... and since Stjepan Sejic has such a recognizeable art style (and if i may add, most of his character types look similar) i couldn't continue... everytime i see Bernie, i picture Allison from sunstone.... changes the whole comic....

anyways... what REALLY sucks is Stjepan Sejic has become the main artist for Rat Queens (another awesome comic) which means i may have to stop reading that as well :(

i'll try to make some Rat Queens demotivators to pay for this derailing comment XP
