Oh God, you have no idea. And then later my character went CE and was the only good one in the party. Eventually I tried to kill the ******* who was our questgiver and got mailed to another plane. It was a relief to get out of there.

A moment like that happened to me when I was running the last session of Lost Mines of Phandelver for 5E. The PCs were storming Castle Cragmaw, and out comes the Owlbear from its' tower. However, the door is was way too small for it, and it was the only way in or out of the room. Instantly everybody thought, "Wait, how did this guy even get in here, that's stupid." I ended up spinning a tale about a wizard taking an owl and a bear in there separately and getting to work.

I wonder what they were thinking when they put that into the module.

1) Wizard casts Reduce on owlbear, takes owlbear into room, ends Reduce.
2) Owlbear found as juvenile, taken into room, grows too large for door.
3) Large creature squeezes through door, treating it as Difficult Terrain. Remember that 10x10 / 4 squares for many Large creatures is a conceit of the lack of direction/facing rather than a literal size.
4) Opening in wall was originally larger. Owlbear placed inside, smaller door and bit of wall placed on room.

If you can fit an average-sized Arabian horse through an ordinary house door IRL without much trouble (see this (http://huffpost.com/us/entry/4762942) article about an equine which was moved indoors during Hurricane Xaver and stayed there), then an Owlbear can get through a potentially-larger door in a tower no trouble, at most being slowed down briefly as it walks through kinda carefully (hence possibly treating the door as difficult terrain). I reiterate, Large creatures taking up four 5' squares is purely a conceit of not having facing in the system post-AD&D and not literally representative of their size.

Squeezing.

The rule you want to use here is the rule to squeeze in order to move through an area that is smaller than the space you normally take up in the board.

It basically halves your move speed when doing so. It exists separately from difficult terrain because they can stack.

I mentioned squeezing in the post before that one and knew it halved move speed, but forgot it was separate from difficult terrain (difficult terrain is why I thought squeezing halved move speed; they both do). Didn't realize they were separate/stacking; I'll have to toss a few sections of that on my dungeon maps now. Good catch.

Anyone remember the old Eye of the Beholder series of PC games? In the second one there was a level filled with giants (frost I think) who were basically crawling around because they were trapped in a structure which was too small for them to stand up in. If and when you managed to kill them you'd encounter their king who told you they had been teleported into this dungeon and couldn't escape.

Nope, 4e hate came from them being in the first Player's Handbook alongside tieflings, with half-orcs and gnomes nowhere to be found.

And then 4e went and ruined a good thing when gnomes came back in the second one...

4e really wanted to be quite simplistic early on, to be honest. You had the 4 basic classes (Rogue, Fighter, Cleric, Wizard), alongside some which provided variation in fluff and a very different playstyle or very different fluff and rather similar playstyle (Warlock, Ranger, Paladin, Warlord). That meant that there wasn't enough space for the first book, they didn't want an overbloat of classes. That's why when Druids and Barbarians came back, they came in full force with an entire new Power Source alongside Shaman and Warden. Also the Sorcerer and the Bard came back, and the Avenger and the Invoker showed up. PHB2 was very great and almost mandatory, personally.

I also have an idea for a theme challenge. The theme is that the text (not the title) is: "a.k.a. rocks fall and everyone dies."

Because sometimes the GM just needs a really big hammer to hit the PCs with. ... actually that could be the theme.

I sort of agree with you, he is defiantly more lawful than good but he still seems to be out to help people in his own brutal way. Also when did he ignore corruption? Was that in the anime version? In the books corruption in the government only comes up once near him (that I can remember) and he kills the people involved.

But really the main issue is I didn't have a better image/character to use.

I got an idea for a theme we could do. I see a lot of posters that say something like "Intimidation check: Natural 20" that seem to ignore that in 3.5, a nat 20 didn't guarantee success for skill checks. So I came up with two variants on that, skill checks that rolled nat 20s that failed anyway (a character gives a superb effort but fails anyway) and natural 1s that succeed anyway (from the character being exceptionally skilled). Does this sound fun to anyone? Another little tweak could be finding 'okay' efforts some characters did and give them a skill roll BETWEEN those two numbers and maybe ranks based on how good it was. I'm sure there are plenty of 8s and 13s out there too.

Don't worry about it they are a pair of games using the One Roll Engine system, and can be found with a quick search. The big thing is monsters has a relationship mechanic and a variant for monsters that makes them weaker(because monsters are really... like really strong even outside of fluff), and then lets your relationships effect them. Even outside of that relationships can be called on to help with rolls etc. Also the base setting for monsters is interesting but they include several other variations which I find better/more in line for things. Especially if you say wanna run digimon, persona, or for some reason Fate/Stay(I love it but good things can't happen in a game built around the war for the Holy Grail) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EwcYwax4Oo)

I never played a D&D game like that but I can get behind the system.

You do stupid things? you die.
You got unlucky rolls? you die.
You made yourself powerful enemies in the setting? you die slowly.

I know this deters deeper characters but I for one am all about quicker character switching (as I am quickly bored of a concept in a game after I've figured out it works) and high lethality.

Do it every couple of pages in case you have to close your browser or restart your computer, and everytime you stop reading through for abit. Load Page takes you to the last page you saved at, and there's an auto save feature but I'm iffy on how it works.

The MSPaint Adventures thread in the Web comic Section is more or less entirely devoted to Homestuck right now, so you can ask their if you have questions, but beware of unmarked spoilers.

I'm in the middle of my first read through myself, and going in blind, so as long as you don't overtake me, I can probably help you if you get confused.

I tried reading Homestuck once. Got up to somewhere in act 5 or 6, stopped reading for a month, and couldn't find my way back into it. Dear god there's so much stuff.

That said, you think there are only 13 characters to keep track of? Hah. No. That's only the main characters. You also need to keep track of all the side characters, side objects that you didn't realize were characters, and the next couple batches of characters that aren't necessarily in the story anymore but still remain relevant. It becomes incredibly convoluted, and I honestly don't know if the payoff is worth it.

If you're trying to get back into homestuck, might I recommend a youtube channel called colabhq? They do a let's read of it, there very talented (heck, they even got Dante Basco to do that one guy), and it makes the endless walls of *insert 1-3 colors here* more bearable. The downside being that it'll destroy any head voices you have.

I think part of it is playing for the story. Not the story in the sense of "a long and in-depth charcter study" but more in the case of "Aw neat, something I can post in this thread." (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?248776-More-Funny-D-amp-D-Stories) Having high lethality is good for this because it means you accept your characters as expendable, and are more willing to throw them at, say, that card deck you KNOW is cursed, but will still have hilarious results. Helping this along is the tendency for the more lethal modules to also have more insane, and hence more entertaining methods of death and humilation (Grimtooth's traps, anyone?)

If a dungeon is well designed, it will still have a lot of foreshadowing that can migrate a lot of the difficulty of even 1-hit kill traps. To use Dark Souls as an example, if there are bloodstains or scorch marks on the floor, something nasty is ahead, and there are a multitude of ways to check for or even disarm mimics.

Plus, there is also a sense of satisfaction and catharsis when your characters survive against all odds and somehow prevail.
