For five years, the faithful of Sandpoint have attended church in smaller wooden structures rebuilt after fire destroyed the previous temple, and while their new pastor Abstalar was helpful, kind, and wise, church wasn't the same. Now, the new cathedral is finally done. All that remains is for the Swallowtail Festival to renew the site’s blessings from the gods and it will be as if the Sandpoint Fire had never occurred.

Each of you are in attendance, for your own reasons, at the Swallowtail Festival on the first day of autumn in Sandpoint, and you have just arrived.

I assume all of you have the Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide, which is free. Please check Sandpoint's map and information. Each of you should state the motive of your visit to Sandpoint during the Festival. Have fun.

Skrillak pulled the cowl closer to his head, crouching and shifting about as he tried to avoid any prying eyes. He had heard of a festival from some wondering merchant with too much to drink, and where there were festivals, there were plenty of opportunities to thrive and resupply for the road ahead. Even after travelling so far, Skrillak still held a bad feeling in his gut, eyeing every shadow suspiciously in fear that Hurj would return once more to torture him. Shaking his head, Skrillak continued to mosey about slowly, knowing all too well that goblins were not a welcome sight in, well, anywhere really.

Crossing through Mud Lane, Skrillak continued to look for any materials he could scavenge or loot. He had left the large majority of his gear at a campsite off the side of Lost Coast Road, guarded by his "Loyal" Goblin Dog. All he carried with him were his daggers, his armor, and his trusty greatclub "Thwacker" (Which resembled more of a wood plank then a real club weapon).

Kaetos walked through the northgate of Sandpoint. After more than a week of wandering the region, he was please to finaly arrive for the famed Swallowtail festival. Kaetos was hoping this festival would be a good opportunity to meet plenty of people and show them that a tiefling is more than an infernal spawn.

Walking down church street, Kaetos first stop was to admire the new cathedral, a proof that every one can have a new begining if they put enough effort behind it.

Having just snuck off a boat, Lei-alor had been skulking her way away from the harbor, trying to avoid attention. The only possessions on her person are her arms and armor, her clothes, and a small pouch full of gold (safely tucked under her armor). She assumed that she stood out, so to lessen her possibly hostile appearance, she kept her shortbow and rapier put away, as well as her buckler.

After eavesdropping on a couple from around a corner into an alley, she learned of the festival and decided to make her way there. She honestly doubted that those pirates had any idea where she was, and refused to be so paranoid as to avoid something like a festival in order to escape their attention. Besides, she just lost basically the only "family" she ever had (not counting her friends), and was looking to distract herself from the thought of it.

Feeling more confident in her decision (and being safely away from the harbor), she strides openly down the street towards the festival, as if she has every right to be doing what she is doing. And by the gods, she could use some food and drink.

Kailis stood admiring the new cathedral, the way the lines of its architecture lent it both strength and beauty. Not bad at all, for a town all the way out here.

He could rarely bring himself to leave his studies these days, but he supposed it would be good to enjoy a little levity. It would also be good for the townspeople to see him out & about, and not as some reclusive shut-in mage doing gods-knew-what on the edge of town. The generous flask of linnorm mead he'd purchased from the tavern went a long way toward helping his mood, too.

With a room purchased at the White Deer Inn and her belongings successfully stowed there, Aeslief (https://i.minus.com/jpbOlpUbix5RV.jpg) wanders the festival not in the trappings of a warrior, but a maiden. With a dress of beautifully dyed wool, purchased from a local tailor, worn under her artisan leather armor, and a bear skin cloak, she has engaged in the reveling and worship of the Swallowtail festival. Her hair is worn long, with braids and trinkets festooned in its curls. Her purse is tied to her belt, often opened to purchase pies and trinkets from the festival merchants, but it sits next to a finely crafted short sword, warning would-be thieves that she is no helpless traveler, ripe for plucking or mugging.

As she wanders the town, engaging with the townsfolk and introducing herself to the figureheads of the village, she makes a special stop at the shrine for Gozreh. Here, she kneels in fealty, offering donations of food, gold and prayer. Father Sky. Mother Ocean. Keep my father safe and the earth beneath his feet green and rich. Bless my tribe with goodly weather and generous harvest; do not let them forget me as I have not them. She bows to baptize her head in the pool, which is custom to be found in Gozreh's places of worship, surrendering her spirit to the God's will.

Satisfied with the fealty shown, Aesleif moves on to the rest of the town, once more allowing herself to be caught up in the festival's frivolities. She will purchase a flower wreath, if available, and wear it. Autumn: the time to bid adieu to kind summer, and prepare oneself for unforgiving winter.

Asleif will leave 20 gp worth of goods and gold at Gozreh's shrine.

The Swallowtail Festival begins promptly, as scheduled, on the first day of autumn. The square before the church quickly becomes crowded as locals and travelers arrive, and several merchant tents featuring food, clothes, local crafts, and souvenirs are there to meet them.

The turnout for the opening speeches is quite respectable, and the four keynote speakers each deliver short but well-received welcomes to the festival. Mayor Deverin’s friendly attitude and excitement prove contagious as she welcomes visitors to town and jokes about how even Larz Rovanky, the local tanner (and notorious workaholic) managed to tear himself away from the tannery to attend, much to everyone’s but Larz’s amusement. Sheriff Hemlock brings the crowd down a bit with his dour mood, his reminder to be safe around the evening’s bonfire, and his request for a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the fire that claimed the town’s previous church five years ago.
Fortunately, Cyrdak Drokkus is more than up to the challenge of bringing the crowd’s mood back up with his rousing anecdotes as he delivers a not-completely-irreverent recap of the long process the town went through to finance and construct the new cathedral. He throws in a bit of self-promotion at the end, as is his wont, inviting everyone to stop by the Sandpoint Theater the following evening to check out his new production of “The Harpy’s Curse,” revealing that the lead role of Avisera the harpy queen will be played by none other than the famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda! Finally, Father Zantus steps up give a short speech thanking everyone for coming before declaring the Swallowtail Festival underway.

At noon, Father Zantus and his acolytes wheel a large covered wagon into the square, and after recounting the short parable of how Desna first fell to earth and was nursed back to health by a blind child who she transformed into an immortal butterfly as a reward for her aid, they pull aside the wagon’s cover, releasing the thousand children of Desna—a furious storm of a thousand swallowtail butterflies that swarm into the air in a spiraling riot of color to a great cheer from the crowd. Throughout the rest of the day, children futilely chase butterflies, never quite quick enough to catch them.

Lunch is provided free, at the expense of Sandpoint’s taverns. Each brings its best dishes—this event is a marketing push by the taverns as much to win new customers as it is to feed a hungry crowd. It soon becomes apparent that the darling of the lunch is, once again, Ameiko Kaijitsu, whose remarkable curry-spiced
salmon and early winterdrop mead easily overshadow the other offerings, such as the Hagfish’s lobster chowder or the White Deer’s peppercorn venison.

Kaetos his happy to be there for the festival opening. He watch and listen closesy, as all these different people's speachs bring hopes and smiles to the townfolks. When the butterflies are release into the air, he close his eyes and say a prayer he read not so long ago, on a shrine near Magnimar:

"Blessed is the long road, the destination, the homeward path, and all who make the journey. Let each dream be a bright star in the night sky of your mind, lighting your path in the day."

The tiefling wander around the tents and tables in the square, admiring the work of these craftmans. He then go taste all the wonderfull meals cook by the taverns of the town. He take the time to thank each cook, for these succulent meal and mead

Lei-alor listens to the speeches from the back of the crowd while leaning against the corner of a building, occasionally looking back as if expecting trouble. She pays attention, but has no frame of reference for most of what is said; she's only ever heard the name of this town before. Her rapier is half drawn as the butterflies spill into the air; she's never seen one before and is both surprised and mesmerized.

At the mention of free lunch, Lei-alor is all ears. Over the course of half an hour, she manages to get her hands on all three of the various meals; she is starving and completely unashamed of her greedy appetite. She sits by herself at one of the tables, trying to avoid attention while eating. One of the butterflies lands on the far end of her table; catching and holding her attention as she eats.

Aeslief sucked in the cool autumn air into her lungs with a gasp as the butterflies are released. In her country, feasts were a celebration of life and time spent not traveling in frozen wastelands, where the cold rattled your bones, and Auril's promise of death echoed on the winds. The cold in these lands did nothing to her bones, and the snow goddess' macabre words were no where to be found, but still the people feasted.

Instead, these people revelled with excess in their harvest time; such adulation over the reconstruction of a cathedral. Mind you, the Ulfen traditionally built wooden building and wooden cities, easily constructed and just enough to isolate from the chill, but ultimately nothing permanent. What a strange, but wonderful people these Varisians were. Aeslief wondered how her own tribe would react to such extravagance; poorly, most likely. Her clan were a poor and spartan people; they feasted rarely, their clothes were simple and their jewelry was made of bone and wood. To the Ulfen, it was not a man's wealth that spoke of his character, but his lineage and his actions. Linnorm kings were chosen by their ability to find and kill the elusive and dangerous fey dragon - Aeslief herself would find one to slay when the time came. But until then, she would learn from her neighbors. Perhaps the extravagance of this festival was "unnecessary," but it certainly was entertaining.

Priests of Desna were not at all uncommon in her home country, though her tribe, one of fishermen and farmers, revered Gozrah most of all. Still, Aeslief could offer pennance to the Tender of Dreams. She was an old goddess, and one to be equally loved and feared.

The tribal princess takes care to try a bit of every dish being served - though she fills herself mostly on venison and mead, the meal most resembling the diet of her clan. With her appetite sated, Aeslief rejoins in the festivities, dancing where there is music and marveling where there is art. She takes the time to meet the people of this strange land and learn as much as she can from their way of life.

It wasn't long before Kailis was stuffed. He'd almost forgotten what good food tasted like, he'd subsisted on simple and inexpensive fare for far too long. The good food and drink made him more jovial than he'd been in years, he'd even taken to making small talk with the townspeople. He noted with amusement that it looked like some of them had come from far abroad.

Skrillak eyed the food with a watering mouth and flopping tongue, his stomach rumbling as he took in the sight of the feast. Moving swiftly, Skrillak moved to the nearest platter to fill his plate before beating a hasty retreat. Scampering away, Skrillak dove for cover to avoid further sight, and once he was sure he was hidden behind an alleyway, he began to stuff his face with all the food his stubby hands could grip.

Finally, as the sun begins to set, a sharp retort, like the crack of distant thunder, slices through the excited crowd as the sun’s setting rays paint the western sky. A stray dog that has crawled under a nearby wagon to sleep starts awake, and the buzz of two dozen conversations quickly hushes as all heads turn toward the central podium, where a beaming Father Zantus has taken the stage.

He clears his throat, takes a breath to speak, and suddenly a woman’s scream slices through the air. A few moments later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises—high-pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human.
The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee as the stray dog gives a pained yelp and then collapses with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. As blood pools around its head, the raucous sound of a strange song begins, chanted from shrill, scratchy voices.

Everyone roll a Spot check.

Aeslief spits out the venison she idley chewed with the dogs whimper. A mixture of anger and joy boils her blood at the prospect of coming battle, even though she was poorly outfitted for it; she didn't even have her legendary Earth Breaker at hand. Standing up, she unsheathes her blade and whirls it at the ready, other hand straightening to push back people behind her, lest they get caught up in the battle.

Perhaps this refined city had something more to offer than fancy food and vulgar spectacles of wealth.

Surprise Round

- Lei' Alor shoots the goblin in the knee. As the goblin screams in his own language, two more run in your direction, and you realize many more goblins are coming your way, chanting...
- Kaetos - you still have your surprise round
- Kailis - casts Mage Armor on himself.

Initiative order

1 - Lei-Alor, Kaetos and Skrillax
2 - Goblins 1 and 3
3 - Aeslief and Kailis
4 - Goblin 2

The goblins gain the benefits of their warchanter’s inspire courage, gaining a + morale bonus on saving throws against fear and charm and on attack and damage rolls.

You hear them chanting in the distance:

Goblins chew and goblins bite.
Goblins cut and goblins fight.
Stab the dog and cut the horse,
Goblins eat and take by force!
Goblins race and goblins jump.
Goblins slash and goblins bump.
Burn the skin and mash the head,
Goblins here and you be dead!

Perhaps this unexpected ambush could be used to Skrillak's advantage. He needed goblins to boss around and start a clan to begin with, and he needed the aid of the big un's to properly equip them and get more resources. Two birds one stone, or in this case, one wooden "sword". Grinning maliciously, Skrillak belted out a high pitch shriek before rushing out of his cover at the nearest goblin, throwing himself into a murderous frenzy to cow his brethren. Perhaps what was even more disturbing then then the flurry of fur, skin, and bloodied wood was that he was madly cackling and..... Singing?

Do you like my sword, sword?
Sword, my wooden sword, sword!
You cannot afford, 'ford
My wooden sword, sword!
Even if you could, could
You are dead, dead!

Looking down at the decapitated head, Skrillak began to breathe in a much slower pace, his blood rage ending as the surrounding goblins were killed or fled in fear. His muscles grew a bit tired from the rush, his body naturally coming down from the adrenaline high, but he was almost thrown back into it again as he looked up and saw all the tall ones around him with weapons out. Instinctively clutching Thwacker, he almost bared his teeth when it dawned on him that they weren't attacking him. Perhaps they weren't so dense as to ignore aid when it is given freely. Rolling his shoulders forward, Skrillak notes the Goblin war party rapidly approaching, and brandishes a toothy gein at the sight.

The Warchanter critical misses Kaetos. He shoots one of the dead goblins on the ground. He curses in his own language.

Kailis, nearly out of spells, rushes over to one of the dead goblins. He frantically searches for a weapon, any weapon, that he might be able to use.

He picks up a shortbow and a handful of arrows. Been a while since he shot one of these. He nocks an arrow and looses it at the last goblin.

Assuming that since he was able to Color Spray all 3, he can 5' step up to the dead Goblins.
Move Action to pick up the bow, Standard Action to shoot.

Skrillak, annoyed with the way things are currently going, grips his bludgeon tightly and surges forward. Swinging wildly, he shouts to the Warchanter in Goblin, screaming out a stream of profanities that would make a seamen blush. Finally he caps it off by swinging Thwacker in an upwards arc, much like a golf club, and aiming straight for the Warchanter's chin.
