In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."

You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.

Zimira sat in the driver seat of the wagon, reins held loosely in hand, and ushered the pair of oxen eastward along the Triboar Trail. He chain mail armor jingled and jostled as the cart was pulled along the trail which was proving to be much rougher going than the wider and flatter High Road. To no one in particular she says: "If we can keep this pace we may yet see Phandlin before needing to make camp again. It would be worth it I think to press on for the night and be rewarded with a warm bed and a cooked meal." Wiping a bead of sweat from her brow with the heel of her thumb she flicks the reigns again casually to spur the ox team.

"Damn," says Thomas, peering at his companions from under his red hood, "I'd like a good meal right now." He rubs his stomach with his left hand and licks his lips. Thomas speaks with an uncaring air, as if ignorant of or - more likely - unconcerned with the perils that befall travelers on roads such as this.

"Well, Phandalin is quite the frontier town, mostly farmers and traders and other likewise hardworking simple people, but if I recall correctly the inn in town is quite homely." The half-elf says in response to Thomas' comment as she arches her shoulder blades slightly in order to pop her back which had began to ache it's old dull ache from the weight of her sword and heavy shield. Driving the cart was nothing too exciting but it certainly had its benefits; were she on foot she'd be hard pressed to keep pace with the group and quickly finding herself lagging behind. Her well-worn armor certainly had its benefits but it was far from being something you'd want to spend a lifetime walking in.

A good meal is what they worry about ... I'd like a good ale right now, and none of that Elven watery stuff. The mention of a frontier inn makes Gormil perk up. He squints to look forward up the trial, and produces what could be best interpreted as a grunt of approval. We're making good time.

Lewis walks to the left side of the wagon. He easily keeps pace with the wagon, despite his chain mail armor, due to long years spent marching. At the mention of a good meal, he smiles. Soldiers could take quite a lot with the promise of a good meal at the end.

"Indeed the inn at Phandelver is comfortable enough. The food is hearty, and the ale is not watered down."

Viola lazes along in the back of the wagon, content to be pulled along by the oxen and listening to the chatter of her companions. Absently plucking a few notes on her viol in rhythm with the steps and creaks of the wagon and beasts, she seems to be in a particularly relaxed mood today.

"All you guys ever seem to think about is food. Isn't anyone at all curious about what big discovery our employer has made?"

The half-elf pokes lazily at the pile of provisions stowed at the back of the wagon, then grins cheekily.

"Looks like a bunch of provisions. Perchance the food in Phandalin isn't as good as Lewis makes it out to be."

Zimira Fontaine (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=32192)

"Have you traveled out this direction before as well?" Zimira asks Lewis curiously. She was still getting to know the seemingly random fellowship that Gundren had assembled for this task and eager to learn what each of them had in the means of life experience. After all if bandits or marauders attempt to show face on the road in hopes of easy prey, its good to know you can count on people to have your back. She wasn't terribly worried through, they had near half a dozen armed and armored among their numbers and surely wouldn't be seen as an easy target.

When Viola speaks up from the rear of the wagon the paladin has to crane her neck to put eyes on the other half-elf. "Nothin' wrong with a bit of good food..." She says, "...in times like these people need to be able to enjoy a warm meal, some good music, and the company of their friends. Keeps us going through the dark times that seem more and more common as of late." The paladin jerks a thumb towards the tightly packed provisions. "And if I know Gundren, he's not the type to be sitting around in some inn. He'll likely be pawing though some abandoned ruins or trying to set up camp on some sheer rock face while in search of some dwarven legend. Always got some sort of grand scheme going on that one does..."

You've been on the Triboar Trail for about half a day. As you come around a bend, you spot two dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

From a reclining position, Viola scrambles to her knees on the wagon, eyes shining brightly. She seems genuinely interested in learning more about Gundren. Just as the wagon comes around the bend, Viola is the first to notice that there was something in the way.

"Uh, is it just me, or are there a bunch of dead animals blocking the road?"

You all recognized the horses as belonging to Gundren Rockseeker and Sildar Hallwinter, the men who have employed you. You realize the horses were dead for about a day now, and it was clear that arrows had killed them.
As some of you examined the scene, you noticed that the saddlebags have been looted and that, nearby, laid an empty leather map case.

Moments after you approached the bodies, and your suspicions made you ready yourselves for an ambush, you hear movement all around you. You were already prepared to fight as you see goblins jumping from each side, ready to attack you!

So roll initiative =) Also, to make things easier for me, while in combat, please include current hp and total ac in every post. Thank you.

Gormil takes an oath (self-imposed restriction) not to cast beneficial spells on himself for the next 24 hours.

Gormil then goes back to examining the area, more carefully, for trails of blood, signs of dragging or broken branches, any sign where Gundren and Sildar might have been taken. They should be still alive. Otherwise, why wouldn't the Goblins dump them here?

Searching the bodies, you find each of them wears leather armor, shields, daggers and shortbows.

As you are going to travel, following the trail or headed for Phandalin, please indicate marching order. Thanks.

With the application of Zimira's supernatural healing, Viola's wounds begin to mend, especially the painful-looking gash down her back. She comes to, and is able to stand, despite the fact that her wounds had not been completely healed.

"Thank you, sister. I'll take the rest from here. Damn these goblins!"

Cast Cure Wounds on herself, healing [roll0] damage.

Having taken care of her wounds, Viola turns her attention to the trail left by the goblins.

"I vote that we go after them. I'll show these goblins to attack good people!" From the context, it is hard to tell whether she is referring to the goblin's captives or simply to herself.

"No the cart is too big to follow the trail, we would have to hide it off the road and tie up the oxen. I am loathe to do that, but these supplies are for naught without the person who hired us to deliver them. Our search of the area has revealed only goblin activity and we have dealt with it for the present. The cart and animals should be fine here for some time. With that in mind, I say we follow the goblins path."

Lewis searches the bodies of the goblins and takes a shortbow and 2 quiver of arrows, a dagger, and a suit of leather armor. He'll place the armor on the cart along with his light crossbow and bolts. He then tuck the dagger and quiver to his belt, finally slinging the bow over his shoulder.

"I'll start seeing to the wagon then, everyone grab the supplies you're going to need for this excursion and those that need to take a rest do so." The half-elf begins to search for a suitable spot away from the road and out of sight where the wagon could be stored while they traipsed down the goblin trail. Once found, she drives the wagon to the secluded spot and un-yolks the pair of oxen before tying each off to a nearby tree. Not knowing how long they'd be gone, she also sets out some food within reach of each ox.

Once everything is squared away she returns to the Triboar Trail and joins the others, ready to march on towards some unknown fate."Did someone want to scout ahead of the group or shall we all march together?"

About 10 minutes after heading down the trail, you detect a hidden snare before you trigger it.

Another 10 minutes, you find a camouflaged pit. Classic traps. No problem.

After a while, you come across a large cave in a hillside, five miles from the scene of the ambush. A shallow stream flows out of the cave mouth, which is screened by dense briar thickets. A narrow dry path leads into the cave on the right-hand side of the stream.

Your tracking reassures you that this area is used by more than a dozen goblins.

"A cave! I bet those dastardly goblins are hiding out in there! There's no sign of guards, but just to be sure, you guys stay here while I go ahead to scout."

Whispering to her companions, Viola creeps forward, attempting to look for any sign of guards or traps. Her rapier is drawn and there is a strange gleam of excitement in her eyes.

Letting the scout have some distance ahead the paladin slow begins to make her way across the clearing towards the cave mouth. Should any trouble rear its ugly head she didnt want Viola's life in mortal danger again for the second time in one day. Sixty feet or so behind, Zimira keeps an eye out for trouble.

On the east side of the stream flowing from the cave mouth, undetected, Viola spots a small area in the briar thickets that has been hollowed out to form a lookout post or blind. Wooden planks flatten out the briars and provide room for guards to lie hidden and watch the area, including a pair of goblins lurking there right now!

Briefly considering whether or not to alert the rest of her team, Viola instead chooses to cast a spell. Strands of enchantment magic tug at the goblins' consciousness, lulling them to take a nap. It's got to be boring just standing around watching for enemies, right?

"Sleep tight, my little goblin friends."

A satisfied grin spreads across Viola's face as the goblins rub their eyes and drift off into slumber. Quickly looking around to confirm that the 2 goblins were all the guards that had been posted, Viola beckons the rest of the party.

"The coast is clear. Let's move."

Lewis pat's the bard on the shoulder and speaks to Viola, "A fine trick."

Lewis removes the rope from his pack and begins to tie one goblin up after placing a gag in its mouth.
"Intelligence about what lies in this cave would come in very handy... but we only need one of them."

As he finishes tying the goblin up, he unsheaths his dagger and slits the other sleeping goblin's thoat. Wiping the blood from the blade on the goblin's clothing before resheathing his dagger.

As far as I know he was put to sleep and then gagged and tied up with ropes. The other goblin was killed via coup de gras by a dagger cutting it's throat whilst it slumbered.

I guess Thomas might speak goblin, or else why ask to question it...although goblins do know common...how well they speak it/understand it is DM fiat.
