So, I asked the players for a rundown of all the wealth they've gained because I just want to check and see if they're on the WBL path, and hit a snag. I'm not even sure if I'm reading the table in the DMG correctly. Are the amounts in the expected wealth gain column supposed to be cumulative or total? The use of gain to me seems to say that the values are supposed to add up, so instead of the value in the first column representing the amount of wealth a character of that level should have, in fact its the total of that and of all the values above it. I'd prefer to avoid giving my players too much loot, but I also don't want them to be horrendously undergeared.

Here's the gear list as I can remember it. Party's character level is 6, but they've each got a +2 template on them, so they should be at ECL 8. Been running it as if they were simply level 6.

Druid
+1 Studded leather armor (1150)
+1 shock scimitar (8300)
folding boat (situational usage item, really don't like counting it) (7200)
Amulet of Natural attacks (+1 enhancement) (2300)
Wilding Clasp (2000)
CLW Wand (750)
Total 10700 (17900 with boat)

PsyWar
+1 Shortsword (2300)
Adamantine Greatsword (3300)
Total 6600

Bard
MWK Chain Shirt (250)
+2 Rapier (8300)
Wand of CLW (750)
Bag of Boulders (2300)
Total 9600

Sorc
+1 Ring of deflection (1000)
+1 Darkwood Buckler (1150)
+2 Bracers of armor (4000)
Wand of Daylight (11250)
Ring of Animal Friendship (also situational, don't like counting it against them) (10,800)
+2 Cloak of Charisma (4000)
Gloves of lightening Just remembered (2000)
Total 23400 (34200 with ring)

Rogue
Masterwork Greataxe (300)
+2 Studded leather with the shadow enchantment (7750)
Necklace of Fireballs type 1 (1650)
Total 9700

Unclaimed
+2 Ghost Touch hand crossbow (18300)
Wand of Owls Wisdom (4500)
Someone also has +2 Gauntlets of Ogre Str, either the rogue or the psywar. I really can't remember at this point and the group hasn't gotten back to me yet. (4000)
Smattering of potions and scrolls.
A set of dragonscale full plate. (3000)
Total 27800

Grand total 107800. or 21860 per character

I'd say they are fine. The WBL table is what they should have at those given levels. So for example at level 7 they should have 23500 gold worth of stuff (roughly). That should give them the ability to properly take on things that are coming.

So ya, I'd say they are fine on WBL.

Maybe I'm lookign at the wrong table. DMG Page 54? Thats the one I'm lookign at. The pre-errata version. Because that number is no where on my table.

You may be looking at the NPC WBL table.

You are looking at the wrong table the WBL chart in the 3.5 DMG is around page 135 IIRC (will check once I have access to my books)

Sorry I was looking at pathfinder rules

In 3.5 on page 135 under "character power levels" there's a chart that has what they should be at wealth by level. At 6th level they should have 13000 gold worth of stuff, roughly.

It's table 5-1, page 135. The listed value for 6th level is 13,000 gp though, and 17,000 gp for 7th. There is some value mismatch between players though.

The druid is worth: 16350 gp
1000 for the +1 studded leather armor
8000 for the +1 shocking scimitar
2600 for the amulet of natural attacks (probably)
4000 for the wilding clasp (based on this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?123458-3-5-Price-check-on-Wilding-Clasps) thread, couldn't find other sources)
750 for the wand of clw

The psychic warrior is worth: 5050 gp
3050 for the adamantine greatsword
2000 for the +1 magic shortsword
(this is more balanced if the psychic warrior is the one with the 4000 gp gauntlets of bull's strength and the 3300ish gp dragon plate)

The bard is worth: 10450 gp
300 for the masterwork chainmail
8000 for the +2 rapier
750 for the wand of clw
1400 for the bag of boulders

The sorcerer is worth: 14705 gp
2000 for the ring of protection
205 for the darkwood buckler
4000 for the +2 bracers of armor
4500 for the wand of daylight
4000 for the +2 cloak of charisma

The rogue is worth: 9720
320 for the masterwork greataxe
7750 for the +2 studded leather armor with shadow enchantment
1650 for the necklace of fireballs type I

EDIT: Added the specifics for each player

So I just totalled it all up, and for level 6, they're overgeared. Of course the distribution is horrible. As pointed out just above if I rule them as an ECL 8 party, they're undergeared. Their lack of tactics is what keeps me keeping them down at level 6 as opposed to 8.

Your sorcerer should probably sell the wand and the ring and get something more useful.

I'd like to think that maybe the party should sell off a bunch of this stuff. They've liked having the daylight wand around though. Has been coming in handy to make a great light source.

Snip

Your values for the +2 weapons are low. 4000 is the cost for a +2 armor, it's 8000 for a +2 weapon.

whoops, thanks. was trying to do prices from memory.

alright, even with my bad maths and pricing, the bard and the psywar are the most undergeared and could more than likely use something. I'd say the bard mostly since I can't ever remember what he does in combat. The rogue could likely use something. The sorc could give a few things up.

They psywar doesn't wear armor. He prefers to use his powers to give him his armor bonus. Also he's dex based. He only took the greatsword since he was the only one who could use it.

Your calculations are off on many of these items.

Total party wealth excluding "Smattering of Potions", other non magical, coins, art, gems or some other object worth money, is 115,170. The problem is 30,200 is in gear nobody wants - I tend to count it as sale price of 15,100.

That leaves a total of 102,070 gold to distribute among the 5 players. Or 20,414 per player

You should treat them as 8th level characters which means the WBL is 27,000 per player.
