Just what the thread's title says. How do these things grapple? How do they deal damage if they win the grapple check? Do they just deal similar unarmed damage like a regular character would, affected by their size category?

Like this. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CL2hetqpfg) Those legs are sharp, and so are the massive, venomous fangs. Centipedes don't mess around.

By the way, DON'T click on that if you're afraid of bugs.

The grapple rules are explained concisely (well, as concisely as the grapple rule can be) on this (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/specialAttacks.htm#grapple) page.

By default, successful grapple checks inflict unarmed strike damage. The Constrict special attack substitutes this value.

There are no other ways to alter this value. Either improve your unarmed strike damage, or get the constrict special attack.

Note that when you're grappled, you can attack with any of your natural weapons normally, with attack rolls vs. AC, although with a penalty. The statement above only applies to damage inflicted by winning a grapple roll.

So what you're saying is that unless Large Monstrous Centipede attacked with its bite, it would do 1d4 unarmed damage?

1d4 nonlethal unarmed damage, yes.

I recommend the bite.

To add to this, Monstrous Centipedes don't have Improved Grab. In general, they won't choose to grapple unless a summoner orders them to. And in that case, the purpose is to restrain the enemy, not to deal damage, so the low damage is largely irrelevant.

But with their size bonus to grapple, they relatively good at it.
