Okay just got my PHB and first things first did they really make the example character build Player Bob making Bruenor!!??

Second did they get rid of the rolling for abilities score option?

No. Page 13 has the 'Roll 4d6, drop lowest' approach too.

Yeah, they did use Bruenor as the example of character creation. There's also references to Drizzt, Regis, Wulfgar, and Artemis Entreri elsewhere in the book, along with other characters from Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, and such. WoTC went out of their way to acknowledge the history of D&D in this edition, which is cool for old grognards, but kind of falls flat for anyone new to the game.
