What's the best balance of the two? I plan to utilize eldritch blast and probably take the tome pact for more Cantrips. I'll be a noble tiefling.

What the synergy are trying capitalize upon? Nothing immediately springs to mind.

Most people like taking warlock 2 sorcerer the rest. It is a way of playing with maxed at will attack that you can use after you've nova'd with twinned blasting spells.

The general idea is Warlock 2 to get a nice Eldritch Blast and Hex, and Sorcerer X to use metamagic on it (Quicken and Twin are favorites). You also end up with a lot of spell slots due to having both casting systems together, and you're still SAD with Cha. Warlock 3 is sometimes taken for all the Tome Pact Cantrips and 2nd level Warlock slots, but seeing as you will often be burning a Warlock slot for Hex I think I'm more a fan of Warlock 2 now.

For subclasses Warlock almost certainly wants Fiend for the temps (I guess Old one for Telepathy could be neat), and Sorcerer probably wants Wild because most of the Dragon abilities get counterfeit by Warlock (you already have Light Armor so the AC is just +1, and the dps bonus won't matter on your main at will, and the moderately armored feat to get a point of Dex, Breastplate, and a Shield is sort of good as well). You could still go Dragon if you REALLY want the Flight but its a long wait of having barely any class features until level 16.

Another benefit of Warlock3 over Warlock2 is the pact spell slots can be converted to sorcery points.

No, they can't. The section on multiclassing states that Pact Magic slots can be used to cast spells from other classes, but it doesn't allow you to use them to fuel other abilities, such as the Paladin's Divine Smite or the Sorcerer's Sorcery Points.

Actually, the paladin's Divine Smite doesn't work because it requires paladin spell slots; Converting spell slots to sorcery points does not have this clause, and allows any spell slot to be converted to sorcery points.

Warlock 3

Darkness 2 / short rest + Devil Sight + Pact of the Chain (Imp)/Pact of the Tome

Actually, the paladin's Divine Smite doesn't work because it requires paladin spell slots; Converting spell slots to sorcery points does not have this clause, and allows any spell slot to be converted to sorcery points. There are no such thing as "Paladin spell slots", that was a mistake (as mentioned by the devs). When multiclassing, you don't keep track of spell slots based on class, you pool your casting class levels to determine spell slots. By this logic, you can't use Divine Smite at all after multiclassing, because none of your spell slots are "Paladin spell slots".

As for Sorcery Points, you can't use a Warlock's Pact Magic slots to convert. The section on multiclassing specifically calls out that you can use your Pact Magic slots to cast non-Warlock spells, and vice versa. If you have a lenient DM, you might be able to convince them that the similarity between the two is enough that you can convert them, but it's clear that that's not the intention, or it would say that you can use Pact Magic slots to fuel other class's abilities, instead of only saying that you can use them to cast other class's spells.

Where are you getting that class features that refer to spell slots can't be used with Pact Magic spell slots? It refers to spell slots, pact magic gives spell slots.

Mearls has already tweeted that Divine smite doesnt need 'Paladin' spell slots to use.

Warlocks can use their slots as a battery for Sorcery pool and to power Divine Smite.

what you REALLY wanna do is try to convince your DM to let you take the dragon bloodline path as a force dragon. If you can somehow swing that Eldritch blast becomes at-will insanity blast.

Get something necrotic instead, gives you just as much eldritch blast damage and increases your sorcerer spell damage too.
