Time: Dusk on the 30th of Eronblatt
Location: In the Grand Hall of Castle Principia, City of Horst, Kingdom of Ajvaria

Castle Principa is the seat of seat of power for King Ajvar II, magelord and ruler of Ajvaria. Never defeated in a mageduel, powerful and mighty, he sits on his chair with the expression of someone listening to an old friends' tale told too often. Nonetheless, he nods along as his brother, Minister Arleong, expounds some uninteresting peasant issue. Ajvar is an acceptable ruler, insofar as he knows where his talents lie and delegates appropriately. Normally, he is better at feigning interest in affairs of the realm. Tonight, however, he has only eyes for his daughter, Ellie. She cast her first cantrip earlier today, near the start of the autumn harvest festival, a good portent. Unlike her older brothers, she has shown talent in the arcane arts, making her the heir of Ajvaria.

Also clustered around Ajvar II are several priests (the clergy are always invited to these events), each attempting to jockey to better their god's position at court, to gain worshippers or power or wealth. There is at least one mage hoping to apprentice himself to Ajvar, and Ajvar's aides are having trouble making sure everyone gets time with the man. Ajvar is flanked by Gyron, his Lord Marshal, and Xin, the local priest of Boccob. A grin crosses Xin's tattooed face, and he mutters something into Ajvar's ear, and laughs. Gyron furrows his brow and focuses on those begging audiences, his hand resting on his belt, not quite close to his sword but close enough you might be forgiven for thinking the massive, battle-scarred man was threatening you just with his glance.

Pyotr and Kansas are nowhere to be seen, but Ellie is close by, showing off her small lights and colors she can produce with her manifesting magical abilities. With her ability appearing at age 8, it seems likely she will be as powerful as her father. She giggles in delight as more lights flicker into being beyond her fingertips, and her auburn hair shakes around her as she laughs. The man next to her is Cames, apprentice of Ajvar and her tutor. The maids gathered near her are her servants, and their laughter and compliments seem genuine for the first time as they wonder at the powers that they will never know.

There are about a hundred people in the hall of varying class and rank. Ajvar invited merchants, priests, wizards, nobles, wealthy travelers, and any interesting non-humans who look like they might have a story in them-- and it's quite a party. The wine flows freely and the appetizers are lovely, if a bit overly sweetened. That's how Ajvar likes his food, though, if his round belly is any indication, and for the king's sake everyone's food is over-sweetened. Even the wine is sweet. Some say Ajvar only began craving sweetness after his wife, Isalya, passed, but it is dangerous to even whisper gossip about the mage-king, whose ears are everywhere.

Music flows through the warm, well-lit hall from a stage to the side where three bards make an impromptu trio, strumming and fluting and singing tales of Ajvar II's glorious heroism and the endless wealth of Ajvaria. Looking around the party, you almost think they aren't exaggerating. This is a pretty posh place to be spending your autumn festival, even if you are a bit away from home.

Having recently finished a job in the capitol, Zipora has spent the last few weeks in idleness, enjoying sights and sounds of the city. Though a party held at Castle Principa is not Zipora's ideal way to spend the Autumn Festival, her curiosity has got the best of her, and she has managed to gain entry.

Zipora keeps mostly to herself, feeling a little out of place amongst the other party guests, and does her best to not arouse to much suspicion. Eying the guests, she sees no one that she knows, but did hear that Axel, a sorcerer acquaintance of hers, was planning to attend. She smiles as she overhears an young human cleric telling a rather riskee joke involving an ogre and awkward circumstances. At least someone here has a decent sense of humor, she thinks to herself, while sipping slowly at a goblet of wine which is much too sweet for her liking.

Having been invited because of his standing as a cleric (no one knowing that he isn't a member of any church and simply assuming he is.) He isn't one to turn down the opportunity for a free meal and wine. Still, he isn't a "social butterfly" and keeps to himself, having never been that good at party's.

"At least the wine isn't bad."
He comments to himself as a chorus of laughter breakers out on the other side of the room.

Knut is in his element. This grand feast is a welcome change from his usual self-cooked grub. His wife had always done the cooking and it had taken him a while to learn to fix himself a semi-decent meal in the wilderness. These exotic pastries and fine foods are a real treat.
He stands among some folk listening to an amusing anecdote while he chews on something with a cherry on top. He is dressed in his fine artisans outfit which makes the old dwarf look like a specialist in his field. In truth he had acquired it from his brother who had been the real talent, and from which Knut had learned only the bare basics of sculpting. Still, he found it an enjoyable enough activity to fill the more lonely hours of the day with and he was developing his skills little by little.
He counted himself lucky having been invited this evening. A simple matter of being at the right place at the right time. He muses his luck when he spots Barustyeph.

'Well I'll be the son of my mother!' He exclaims as he walks over. 'Baru! Good to see you here.' He offers a firm handshake and pats him friendly on the shoulder.
'Some feast this! Right?'

I exclaimed returning his warm greeting.

'Ha well I was planning to go much further south, as you know. But divine intervention threw a stick in that idea. The weather changed suddenly and I was ill equipped for a storm like that so after sitting it out I decided to find some civilized town and stock up on supplies and some better clothing. Couldn't have picked a better time! I met a merchant by the name of Puck, the guy deals in rugs, and I helped him out a bit. He was so grateful he insisted I travel with him to his home in this very city. I'm staying at Pucks for the moment until I get everything I need and I'll be off again. Getting invited to this shindig, which is a whole different story, and seeing you here makes the whole experience complete.'

He reaches out for a bottle of wine and refills their glasses.

'Come, sit down! Tell me what you've been up to.'

You can see tell Knut is exited. It has been a while since he has had many people around him and it's clear that some part of him misses it, albeit slightly.

Axel felt a little bit sick. At first, he blamed it on the food. But he soon turned honest to himself and understood it was not the excessive sweetnes to nauseate him. Or at least, not the sweetness of the food.

So the kid was shooting little light out of her tiny fingers...big deal! He couldn't remember his family cheering and partying and squeaking like dormice all the time, as his arcane powers manifested... well, it wasn't "light" he was evoking back then, but that is an irrelevant detail.

He rapidly cast away these thoughts and suddendly turned around, as if his thoughts could be heard and reveal his presence. He wasn't there for fun (for once), and much less for indulging with nostalgia. He was there for work.

"Speaking of which..." he thinks, as he approaches the halfling. "Well, isn't that a surprise" he starts, ironically, as he smiles to her. He has met Zipora practically at every tavern, as they both were seeking for a job. He didn't quite know her, but she seemed nice and not aristocratic/uppity at all (which was a necessary condition, to have Axel dignify one with even a single word). "If a professional like you is roaming around here, it seems that I have come to the right place. Well do you...".
A glance from her makes him understand that she would rather not being disturbed. She was apparently listening to something and clearely did not want to draw too much attention. Axel shuts up at once and starts looking and listening at whatever she is.

Oblivious to the eavesdroppers Knut listens to Barustyeph's story.

I'm sure glad you did too. Not just for my sake mind you.. I've always felt you were a bit too occupied with the unholy dead. He whispers the last two words to make sure he doesn't upset or frighten anyone.

A man like you, in the prime of his life should take time for a feast and a a dance every now and then.
He smiles at Baru to make sure he understands the words were meant kindly.

Come! Let's make the most of tonight. Tomorrow I'll introduce you to Puck. I'm sure he'll be welcoming to you as well.

He holds his glass up to cheer to life with his old traveling companion.

Not having meant to look quite so sternly at Axel, Zipora leans towards him and whispers quietly, "Didn't mean to be rude, just my curiosity getting the better of me. Oh, and I'm not actually working tonight. I just thought I'd come and see what all the fuss was about, and I can safely say that this isn't really my thing, to be honest."

She gives Axel a half smile and shrugs, trying another sip of wine. She grimaces, adding "I was at least hopping for some decent alcohol."

"Alchol, yup...dat'f alwayf a nife perk". The poultry was not half bad, and the sight of all people but him having fun was already washing away his scarce seriousness and commitment.
He decided to give his conscience a last try, before taking full advantage of that lame "cantrip fest".
"Uh, Zipora, listen. I'd stay and have fun with you gladly, probably drinking myself to the Abyss. But I really should be looking for a job, or I won't be able to party that much in the near future. How about I have a last search around, and join you afterwards?"

As the conversation amongst the crowd comes to a temporary lull, Ajvar walks over to the stage by the bards. They cut off their song with a quick fanfare and quickly stand and boy to the magelord. Ajvar claps, a thin smile drawing itself across his face. He turns out towards the gathered partiers, and everyone quiets down, listening for what he will have to say. Even the petitioners seem to have quieted down. Ajvar clears his throat and begins speaking, the natural acoustics of the room amplifying his voice.

"Thank you all for making it out to my summer festival! I hope you've been enjoying the wine and the first courses. The cooks will be bringing us meat and pie soon, but before it draws too late, I think this is a good time to make an announcement! Some of you may have heard that Ellie has begun to show talent in magic. She's eight years old, just as I was; and this is the 16th year of my reign, and the 40th year of my life; clearly, the gods have smiled upon us to bless Ellie with such bountiful magic on such an auspicious day.

To celebrate my heir's abilities, I've called in a few favors. I know last year our fireworks were not very spectacular, but tonight I promise you a show you'll never forget. If you'll direct your attentions towards the massive clear windows in the south walls, the show will begin shortly."

Ajvar steps off the stage, and after brief polite applause, the crowd splits in two-- some following Ajvar, and some pushing towards the windows for a good view of the fireworks. A few stay by the tables, including Ellie and Cames. Ellie is trying to generate 4 lights at once, and Cames' brow is furrowed in concentration. As the first fireworks explode over the city, Cames and Ellie turn their attention towards the windows.

The fireworks mark the official start of the festival. You relax a little seeing the various fireworks unfurl into the night sky, each a different shade, shape, and color. The sages say that such things may someday be possible without magic, but you know that nothing between heaven and earth could create such a glorious display without tapping into the arcane. Most of the fireworks burn brightly, then dissolve into eddies and motes of light and latent magic, but a few are longer lasting, like flares or torches, enduringly bright. They arc through the sky before losing speed and falling back down like shooting stars, still not detonating.

Odd. Shouldn't they be exploding by now?

Several flares fall down into the city, evidently duds. Then, one falls within the castle walls, striking the stable and detonating. The explosion is so energetic, that for a moment the entire courtyard is lit up like midday. The castle shakes with the impact, and about half the audience is knocked off their feet and fall to the ground. Axel and Richheart both fall, but Baru, Zipora, and Knut are standing and can see out the window by the light of the flare, if they want to take a moment to look.

You make out some vague shapes against the sudden light in the courtyard.
They're humanoid, and walking towards the castle.
They're armed.

You find your night vision briefly blinded by the sudden light, and are blinking spots out from behind your eyelids. When you can see again, you see the entire stable had been leveled and is ablaze! Another volley of flares launches into the air from the town, arcing high and heading towards the castle you're in.

In a blink of an eye, Ajvar is gone in a puff of magic. At that same moment, Cames sweeps up Ellie in his arms and winks out of existence-- you don't see him reappear anywhere in sight. Ajvar appears in the same spot of Cames just as Cames and Ellie disappear. Ajvar now-flushed face looks confused, then he mutters a word of power and he too is gone-- none of the three of them are anywhere to be seen.

The guests-- nobles, priests, and powerful and interesting folk are fumbling and tripping over each other as they try to get untangled and get away from the windows. The scene is chaos, and the crowd is panicking. You hear one man scream as he is stepped on. Axel and Richheart both manage to avoid getting stepped on for now, but lying on the ground is probably not the way to go.

The room is 50 feet by 100 feet, with windows along both long walls (the north and south walls). The northern windows are smaller but open out onto the balcony level. The front doors lead down the stairs and into the castle courtyard, and the doors in the rear head up higher in the castle.

Axel got up fast, and stared at the flames in the sky for a while...mesmerized.
Strange, but he surprised himself thinking "fascinating..." a split second before "get your sorry upper class butt out of here, you moron".

He judged the north windows safer, thinking that the panicked mob will probably head for the doors.

A star detonates outside the castle walls, and the crowd screams. The barely-restrained panic bubbling along the surface of the people erupts, and the trampling begins wholesale. As expected, most of the people are running for the doors, but a few make their way for the back of the hall, heading for the stairs that go higher in the castle. Few approach the North windows. Those that do seem to be less panicky, or less drunk than the average partygoer.

Three arrive as you survey the scene. One is elderly man. He is wearing a blade and looking concerned as he limps along with the aid of his cane. It looks like he took a blow in the panicked crowd. You don't recognize the other two-- one is a middle aged man wearing servant's clothing, and the other is a strange-looking fellow you noticed at the party. He looks somewhat like a halfling if halfings had massive bug eyes and were tiled with scales and odd hairs, and two long useless-looking fingers protruding from the top of his head. Even worse, he's dressed in what is as far as you can tell is a burlap sack striped with swirled green paint coupled with dark-colored leather leggings.

The Elderly man is the Mayor of Principia, Soichiro.
Soichiro has been the Mayor for 35 years, and is noteworthy for his defense of the city in several invasions. He served Ajvar I and now serves Ajvar II.
Soichiro has been having trouble dealing with the increase in crime in Principia, and is looking beyond just the Town Guard for help.

Dromites are sturdy and able to manipulate energy, defending themselves against attacks or making them spontaneously.

Looking out over the balcony level, you see the tables and fountains completely deserted. The balcony curls around the garden courtyard and descends via a large staircase into the gardens. From there you can head west through the main courtyard the main gate to get out the castle walls, or east to a wall corner to get into a tower and climb to the top of the walls.

You can't see the main courtyard from here, with its various houses and shops, but with the stable aflame and guests and servants scrambling, it's surely a huge scene. The nearest tower isn't too far, but how you'd get down the other side, though, you don't know. The walls are 30 feet tall and made of masoned stone, not easily climbable without tools. Getting to the top from the inside is no problem, though.

The garden courtyard looks deserted, but with all the bushes and trees, and the lack of torchlight, it's tough to tell.

The castle rumbles lightly as another star strikes the castle wall. None of these rumbles are as big as the one that happened after a star fell in the stables, but it's only a matter of time before another one makes it over the walls. Although this multi-paned window wasn't intended as an entrance to the balconies, it's only a few feet down, and it looks like it was made to be opened.

The Mayor looks uninjured after receiving healing, but he's still an old and slow man. He's standing more comfortably, but not as much as you hoped. He hobbles away from the servant, able to move more easily on his own now, and lays himself in Richheart's arms.

"Thank you for the assistance. If the invasion is already under way, we must hurry towards the front gate before the courtyard is entirely overrun. Carry me, and make haste!"

The fate of the panicked mob didn't concern Axel a lot, until he was appointed the task to babysit the "authority", faster than he could say "but...".
He suddendly felt sorrry for all those people he was leaving helpless, just to bring the old man to safety...although the words "handsomely" and "pay" made him digest the idea better.
After all, when inside the walls they could coordinate a more concrete and effective defence. Good, yes.

As he was following this train of thougts, his mouth pronounced some words of arcane...distractely... like when someone absentmindently talks to himself. A faint glow surrounded him, slowly adhered to his body and faded immediately after...

Axel casts mage armor on himself (and familiar).

The Mayor is carefully lifted down, and the servant and Chris clamber down onto the balcony after you. The balcony is wide and paved with well-seated cobblestones with enough mortar in between to make it easily walkable. The rail is solid carved stone, and beyond it you see the long shadows cast by the shrubs, bushes and trees into the garden. The path goes straight through the center of the garden, meandering slightly and turning west towards the main courtyard.

Without torches lit in the garden, you're aware of how dark it gets any further than 20 feet from the windows into the main hall. The crescent shines overhead, which helps a little. Knut and Baru can see out to 60 feet easily in the darkness, their Dwarven eyes accustomed to situations with little or no light. Axel, Richheart, and Knut each can't see more than 30 feet, and anything beyond 15 feet is murky. A little time away from the bright explosions will help with this, but what would help even more would be a source of light.

Baru squints his eyes and gazes into the darkness using his Dwarfsight to see through shadows that might normally hide thieves. Zipora moves close to the rail, hiding behind it easily with her small figure. She can't see very far into the garden, but her keen ears may hear something, if there is something to be heard.

Looking into the shadows between trees, you see two figures crouched. They're about 20 feet from the bottom of the stairs. They each look roughly human-sized.
You don't see anything, but you hear a clinking noise, like two pieces of metal rattling against each other.

In response to Baru's observation he says:

He moves along the balcony as fast and quiet as he can manage and runs down the staircase. All the while he unclasps the belt that has his Dwarven Axe hanging on his back and with a smooth motion he takes the weapon into his hands.
Down the staircase he doesn't stop but runs: not quite towards the trees Baru indicated, but he makes a 20ft wide circle around them.

He is hoping to spot whoever is there, and to draw them out if they mean harm but doesnt want to frighten them if they should be innocent peasants.

Meanwhile, Knut edges forwards and runs down the staircase, hefting his axe and making a fair amount of noise. He reaches the bottom and runs for the threes 20 feet to the right of the figures. As he gets close, he sees them clearly. Two men, humans, with swords. Their metal mail glints in the moonlight.

Zipora steps forward, and continues to hear the clinking, but still can't make out the figures.

Axel and Baru stand by.

As Knut runs from the foot of the stairwell, the two men step out from the shadows and address him, now visible to everyone. "You there, dwarf-- stay where you are and no-one gets hurt. They should respond to strength. Having raised a few stubborn runts in his day he decides to go with the angry sergeant routine.

'Who's asking?' He says menacing. 'Ill have you know I was enjoying cherry covered pastries a few breaths ago before the whole bloody cake exploded in my face'.

He takes a small step forward with his left foot.

'And now, two numbskulls..' Looking from the one to the other.

'Find it neccesary.. to point.. their.. Fracking! SWORDS AT ME?!?!?!

As Preet and Jeff disappear into the darkness, you examine the parchment and determine their original purpose. Zipora leads the way, her careful steps flitting accross the cobblestones like silk along steel, soundless and deadly.

Each bush and tree looks like it might be another ambusher as the night twists the shapes of the benign plant life into something darker. The garden path was designed to meander, that the guests might enjoy their time amongst the plants, but now you can't help but wish the architect had made it more direct. At last, Zipora raises her hand and the party comes to a halt. She creeps forward to where the shrubbery ends and the main courtyard begins, silently and stealthily, and peers out into the twilight.

The courtyard is a mess of dead bodies and wounded, frightened civilians. At one corner of the courtyard is a group of panicked and wounded unarmed nobles who didn't make it out of the yard yet. Three men you recognize from the party are fighting against a cloaked figure and a man-sized monstrosity. The monstrosity looks like it was once a 6 foot tall jaw of wood with teeth of metal, but impossibly, is moving and fighting.

Two men from the party are on the ground by the monstrosity, unconscious or dead. The armed partied advance warily towards the duo. There's a moment of stillness. Finally, the jaw-like monstrosity leaps forward, ducking between two blades and sinking its teeth into one man, then the other. The third man takes this opportunity to run the cloaked figure through with his spear. The cloaked figure gasps wordlessly and collapses to the ground, slumping over and falling into a puddle of blood.

The monstrosity turns away from the two bitten men, one of whom is down, and the other of whom is writhing on the ground in agony, bleeding badly and shouting wet, loud screams of pain. It begins advancing on the last guard, who is yanking on his spear, trying to pull it out of the cloaked figure's dead body.
