View Full Version : Rules Q&A How does Environment / Dead Magic Zone factor into EL?

I'm currently working with some other guys on a kind of Gauntlet Challenge for mundane characters. The idea is to toss in a single character, who can't be a spellcaster (except minor casting classes like Pala and Ranger), into a series of encounters, different adversaries on different stages, and test the characters' endurance.

Now we're wondering / arguing how environment conditions should affect an encounter's CR. Especially if said environment is grossly in favour of the monsters.

Some examples (not finalized stages, just some stuff that comes to mind):
- Archers on high rock needles spaced out 100 ft apart --> if PC can't fly, he's just a pincushion
- PC gets tossed into a tank of acid to an acid-breathing shark
- Stuff that is very difficult to kill without magic and does not rely on [Su]s - in a dead-magic zone
- locked in a room filled with Solid Fog with a monster that is affected neither by movement penalties nor concealment

Stuff like that.

In my opinion, tricks like that warrant an increased EL rating. Question is, how much, and is there a way to figure out a fair number?

It should affect it, but there's no easy way to calculate how much, unless you can find a listed CR for the environmental factors.
