The four of you are docked on the southern horn of the Forked peninsula, in Naselenor. Daz is a ship's hand conducting you to Hormburgh, a town south of the Ragged Peaks. Baern has been sent to oversee the shipment and protect its contents. Perrin, you've been asked by your guild to represent them on the arrival of the shipment. Shava-Lilli, your guild was contacted to provide quality assessment from an independent third party, and your skillset was deemed the right one for this job.

The four of you are at port for the week before you move on toward Hormburgh, another week's journey. Your shipment is a supply of healing potions to support the Dwarven army - a force of Gnomes, Dwarves, and Humans is being built to cleanse the area north of the Ragged Peaks once again and control the undead population.

You're at a tavern, awaiting a fifth who will join you on your trip to Hormburgh.

Welcome to Bloodnight, Group 3! Whereas Group 1 started in a fairly unsavory position and Group 2 is starting in a pretty nice position, you guys get to start with a cliche. Sometimes we just have to respect tradition.

Perrin sat as quietly as he could in the corner of the tavern, frowning and unhappy with the owner's instructions to "stop bothering the other patrons." So maybe here been a bit annoying with his constant questions...and had jumped from one to another without waiting for an answer...and had been practically hopping up and down with energy, it was hardly his fault given the boredom of the journey so far.

Observing the others on the same trip as him Perrin sighed and moved to join a table with some open space. If he couldn't pester the locals for news at least a bit of conversation would be nice.

The usual black jacket resting at its usual chair, on more than one occasion The Bullseye had provided Shava with a warm meal and drink to go along. Her patronage noticeable enough to earn more than the friendly casual greeting upon entering. Today's special was on her plate, but her usually consumption is obviously slower as she tried not to finish her meal before the meet happened. Fidgeting with her drink while the food sat, she couldn't find but find herself in a more chipper mood than usual.

Almost without reason the fact that she was the second tallest person at the table brought a smile to her face, the tallest being the scaled creature next to her. Not yet acquainted with the sight she had a few questions to ask him, but held her tongue in order not to draw attention to his uniqueness. Lifting her gaze off of Draznatt and with a high curiosity in her voice she asked Hearthstone, "Is the Ragged Peaks your home?" The thought of not mentioning the range was nearly her home to crossed her mind, but the chances anyone would seek out her hometown seemed so minimal that she mentioned it anyway. "It has been a while since I was there myself. Considering our route I don't think that will change.", she says without a hint of sadness.

Why'd we have to travel by boat though? A bad storm is all it takes to put someone in a grave. An almost unavoidable accident if the things at sea. The idea of being confined in small quarters for nearly a week wasn't that pleasant of an idea either.

With Perrin moving around, Shava motions towards a chair at the group's table. "It's good to see that your in a spirited mood today."

@Binks I wasn't sure if Perrin is moving to our table. Shava invited him whether he was or not.

Daz eyed down the little people he would be escorting to the Ragged Peaks. The dwarf looked like he had seen combat before, but the halfling and the gnome both looked like they would need some protecting. He downed his drink silently as the gnome - Shava was her name - as Shava chattered on. None of them had really gotten to know each other yet, and things were still pretty awkward. Daz had been in port at this town many times before, and knew the bartender on duty tonight, a half-elf by the name of Lorinn. He stood up from the table, walked over, and asked her for another drink for himself, as well as one of the decks of playing cards Lorinn kept stashed in one of the cabinets behind the bar.

Daz strode back over to his seat and sat down with a heavy thud, took a swig of ale, and started shuffling the cards between his clawed fingers.

"The name of the game is Blue Dragon's Booty, any of you bilge rats know the rules?"

Without waiting for an answer, he started dealing the cards out in turn. No better way to break the ice than a drinking game.

This isn't a real game. I don't know the rules.

Shava turned her head slightly as the dragonborn took to leaving. Still large to her, Daz in comparison from the other encounters with his race seemed to be short. To think that that was short was an uneasy thought. Once the gnome realized Daz's motive her attention drifted back to the table. The unresponsive dwarf practically allowing her to count the seconds until Daz returned.

A welcomed sight, her eyes went from the heavy thud to the cards being dealt and back again. “I know the rules.” The food in front of her was moved off to the side and her fingers grabbed at the cards one by one until they were in her had. “So Schveinsteiger Daznatt, how long have you been sailing? Have you always been a sailor? You must have a of lot stories to share.” A bad hand. A little bluffing is in order, Deception [roll0].

When asked about a good place to stay while waiting for the ship to leave, the harbormaster directed Flint to the tavern closest to the docks. He would rather travel alone, but the fastest way to get there was on a ship crowded with people. Traveling with people meant that you had to get to know them. He had lost too many friends in the wars and it took too much energy to establish new relationships. It was easier to avoid people. "Lonelier too..." he sighed. "I will try to be more open in the future...," Flint resolves. Flint walks into the tavern and quickly scans the clientele. A group of travelers playing cards caught his attention. Completely out of character, Flint approaches the group and hesitantly asks,"Erm, terribly sorry to intrude, but would it be possible to deal me in...? I played lot of cards back in the wars and it seemed to help the time pass by."

Daz smirked at the gnome. "The sea herself is a story, friend. It's been told since the dawn a'time and it'll keep being told after we're all long gone. Not our story to tell, no, we're just characters, floating at the tip of her loving, fickle pen.

But if ye'd rather hear about when we held off an ambush of fishmen from the deep in the dead of night, I can tell ye such manner a' tales till the sun rises!"

"Erm, terribly sorry to intrude, but would it be possible to deal me in...? I played lot of cards back in the wars and it seemed to help the time pass by."

Daz eyed the newcomer up for a second before sweeping an arm across the table and gathering the cards back up into his hands. "Well, I'll have to reshuffle, but go ahead and grab a chair."

After the offer Shava hms to an unrelated matter, "Do you have a preference on how I call you? I don't mind calling you your full name. Schveinsteiger Daznatt is a great name and all. I'm just not really familiar with dragonborn customs so I don't know whether I should call you by your first name or last name..."

"Erm, terribly sorry to intrude, but would it be possible to deal me in...? I played lot of cards back in the wars and it seemed to help the time pass by."

Shava hands her cards over face down. "Yeah! Anyone that can save me from a mediocre hand is more than welcome. I'm Shava. What is your name friend? Flint Battlehammer, Perhaps?"

"Give me a better hand this time", she says jokingly.

Flint was taken back at the mention of his name. He was expecting to wait hours for them to arrive. Pulling up a chair, Flint sits down. "I was told to wait for a group of travelers, it seems I needn't wait after all," he says still recovering from the surprise. "What are you playing? Blue Dragon's Booty?" Flint spent a lot of time playing this during his service and it turned out that he was quite good. "Do you play the Speckled Dragon Egg wild cards or do you prefer the using the Dragon's Breath combinations?"

Joining the table with the others playing cards, having noted Shava's invitation, Perrin motions for a hand to be dealt to him. "Haven't played Blue Dragon's Booty in years but I'll gladly join in." he says as he joins in the new hand. As he glances at his card the Halfling's face splits into a wide grin which he tries to suppress unsuccessfully.

Turning to the newcomer Perrin does his best to keep calm and limit his questions to only the relevant ones. It's not a very good attempt, and he speaks breathlessly fast. "So what brings you this way? Joining the army out there? Business in Hormberg? Just felt like a cruise? I'd say you picked the wrong way to travel but then I'm not Daz here," the Halfling says, using the shortened version of the Dragonborn's name he had taken to early in their trip since it took less time and let him ask more questions, "I prefer a little more space than a ship has myself. Just not enough places to go or things to see to occupy a trip, though I suppose it does force me to do a bit more study and preparation."

Pausing for a moment to catch his breath Perrin adds "Ah...sorry if I'm talking too fast...sometimes get a bit out of hand when meeting new people. I'm Perrin." he notes, hoping to avoid annoying the newcomer.

"I'm just not really familiar with dragonborn customs so I don't know whether I should call you by your first name or last name..."

Daz snorted with amusement. "Schveinsteiger's my clan name, and it'd do you well not to forget it. Seeing as how we may heading for some rough situations together, though, it's a waste of time to spout out the whole thing in a crisis. Daz is fine.

And as for you, Mr. Battlehammer, we'll just be using the Dragon's Breath combos. We do have to wake up tomorrow morning, after all."

"I was told to wait for a group of travelers, it seems I needn't wait after all."

"We haven't been here all that long. Heck, we're still introducing ourselves. In the course of which, I believe Daz just threatened me." She gives a chuckle and Daz a wink. "I'm good with names. Remembering a clan name won't be a problem for me. Here's hoping the waters aren't too choppy."

The curiosity for a few more questions out of Flint raises, only it's impossible to get in a word pass Perrin without talking over him. Despite a drinking game's purpose, doing good or bad at the card game Shava doesn't drink anymore than she was before the game started. "I'm not good with beer", she reasons. Drinking isn't the issue. It's the accidents afterwards that scare me. A good hand.

Perrin's questions were a little distracting while Flint was playing cards, he could have won the hand were he not distracted. Not ready or willing to open up to a group of strangers, Flint replies solemnly, "I am traveling home to visit the graves of my fellow soldiers." Flint mentally winced, that was more than he had wanted to share and he was sure that the halfing would pepper him with a flurry of questions. Flint continues stoically, "That is all I would like to share for now, I hope that will suffice."

He looks at his cards to avoid eye contact, hoping that the focus of the conversation will change.

Baern was leaning back on his chair, sideways to the table, his feet propped up on a stool. He stared absently into the fire as he worked on his ale. At the question from Shava he sat still for several moments not registering that the question had been directed at him. After a long pause, he looked up, his reverie broken, "Huh? Me?" He cleared his throat, "Oh, no. Well... Close enough to make no difference I suppose. So yeah, sure, I guess so.” As Daz came over with the cards, he perked up, swung his short legs off of the stool to sit properly at the table, “Ah, that sounds great!” He downs the last of his ale and motions for a server to bring him another, then runs a thick hand over his bald, scarred head.

As Daz deals the first hand, he looks at Shava again, “How about you? Whereabouts you come from? Why’re you tailing this cargo of ours?”

When the hand of cards are reshuffled to work Flint in he groans, “Damn! I woulda whooped you all! Ah well, plenty of time for that, eh?”

Noticing Flint’s sad comment, Baern nods solely, looking at his cards, “Aye, war is a terrible thing. It’s good to take time once in a while to pay respect to your fallen. Seen a bit o’ that myself. Too much, maybe.”

“How about you? Whereabouts you come from? Why’re you tailing this cargo of ours?”

Shava tilts the base of her glass up and gulps down the last of her ale before she goes about answering, wiping the foam off her mouth once she's done. "Never been to the mountains in my life. My home? Well, my childhood took place on the right side of those peaks. I haven't been back there since I left for the first time. It's been decades. I haven't really considered that place my home for a long time. My new one's a little larger." She smiles. Realizing she said more than intended, her empty glass is moved off to the side and she is done drinking for the night.

"My employment is an entirely different story. Weeks back I purchased some goods on account. My route around the Forked Peninsula was keeping me fed and provided me with some spare coin. At least, until I showed back up in Naselenor where I had the misfortune of returning with the same spices that a trading ship had rolled in with the day before. It happens. I decided to sit on it for a while.

A new Stonewall member, Lourdes, had lived here for years and was kind enough to give me board. Besides the company she was eager to learn a couple tricks of the trade. She even let me intrude on her business some. I waited as long as I was comfortable with on the spice. I ended up a little in the red, but I had enough to properly compensate my host. My appreciation continued onward as she let me rent at her place while I looked for new work. I found some work at my guild, and that was that. Now, don't misunderstand me. It's not all about the money. I can find work elsewhere, most members don't directly work for the guild. It's a short trip for a me, a month or two, and I'm glad to be of service."

War was something Shava was only vaguely familiar with. She had certainly never been a part of it, but had traveled enough to see its results. Observing from the outside in with a surreal perception. She'd stick to the cards where she isn't so likely to misstep.

Perrin frowns at Flint's abbreviated answer, clearing wanting to hear more. But somehow the Halfling's sense of respect beats his curiosity, this time, and he simply nods an acknowledgement of the answer before returning to the game, and listening in to the other's questions and answers for the time being.

While you're playing cards, the ship's captain comes into the tavern. She's a stocky human woman with short iron hair and a gleam in her eye that says she's seen her fair share of trouble, and she liked it. She stops to talk to the tavernkeeper for a moment, a scroll tucked under her arm.

When she approaches your table, she smiles, a big, yellow smile. Her hair's short, but tightly coiled like springs that bounce when she walks. She talks in Giant, with a near perfect accent. "Ye boys and girls look like yer set up good. Ah've talked to the tavernkeeper and ye've got rooms here if'n ye want to spend yer time on land. We got a week until we set sail here - got me some jobs I want to secure while we're at port, see mah boy, an all that. As fer ye," she smiles again, "Ah recommend ye contact the shore patrol if'n ye want some extra coin. They might be lookin fer some strong hands what can keep the ships safe. The memories of the terror that his kinsmen and fellow soldiers experienced on that fateful day suddenly flooded his mind. Memories of the profane undead trampled through his mind. FLint somehow survived that day, but he was helpless. At the mention of the "deadies" his face flashed white with fear. Flint, distracted with the horrible thoughts, loses the next few hands. "I will never freeze in fear again. I will kill every unholy blight that I can." At the thought, his face turned hot with anger. Flint pounds the table with his fist, startling everyone. Embarrased with his lack of composure, Flint says apologetically, ""Please excuse my shameful expression of anger. I lost many of my friends to the undead and fear that I have become distracted. I know we have only met, but I cannot sit here playing cards while the dead pose a threat to this community. Please, at the earliest convenience, come with me to the shore patrol so that we may find out what we can do to help!"

Abandoning the familiar tone and posture she had taken with the others over the course of the evening Shava replies to the news with an honest "Captain" and nod. "Good luck. Enjoy the time with your family."

Someone mentions undead an instantaneously whatever positive mood they had going is immediately drained dry and replaced with a sad, solemn mood and words to match. Old wounds touched, whatever past devastation the others face had left them raw. Shava says a few words of encouragement to Flint and asks, "Would you be interested in seeing the shore patrol with me today? Some bravado would be a good thing to show. If we want work as early as tomorrow we had better make arrangements today. Asking one day in advance is a whole lot better than none even if the request is still the shortest of notices."

Captain's name... Was hoping to have longer to come up with that, but let's say Aoka Estridsdottir.

The Captain smiles a little. "Thought some coin and a chance to kill some deadies might suit yer fancy. If'n ye like th'idea, down at the docks Harbormaster Vikken's yer man. He'll get ye signed up right quick fer a week's job. They take every able body they can get. Shava isn't quite sure what to think of Flint's eagerness. When he seems to mean to leave now, the abruptness of the request can only leave her looking to the others as if to confirm what he said. Dwelling on her potential answer doesn't bring her any closer to turning down the emotional dwarf. Ah, whatever, I had a couple questions for him anyway. She shrugs to the group. "Alright. After this hand."

"We'll let Vikken know we'll be headed his way tomorrow. That should give him a little more time to figure what to do with us." Shava looks to the captain, "I'll say you said hello."

"Well, then, I've got me a spot of beach for ye to patrol. All ye've got to do is take up watch there fer any deadies, ne matter how big ne small, and do yer best to kill 'em. If'n yer oerwhelmed by 'em give a shout - the alarm call's 'Althaea's bones' and some fellers from down the beach at another patrol point'll be along to help as quick as possible." He says everything twice, in Elvish and Dwarven to ensure he's understood.

So, if you have any remaining questions, please ask in the OOC thread and I'll give you answers. I think we all're kind of spoiling to smash some deads.

The first three nights of patrol are uneventful - no deadies in sight. It's easy work, not having to do much but walk in in the morning and collect your gold (96 gold each for three days). The fourth night, however, it looks like things are going to go about the same way until, about six hours into your shift, two skeletons walk onto the beach from the water.

I'm away from my books right now, so I'll have the zombies take their turn after Daz this round since there's an initiative tie. That way I can get to my books to run their stuff.

He then brings his axes up into a defensive stance, ready to carve up the first deadie that comes his way.

You must be use to fighting more than I expected. You showed it, that's for sure. So, I guess that means destroying some undead isn't going to help heal any past traumas if you've already been doing that." Yawning, Shava looks physically tired.

"Hey, Vikken. I thought the whole collecting heads thing was a little odd. I made myself figure that it was just an foolproof way to prove we broke what we were suppose too. But, now, given that we encountered five undead without heads the practice doesn't seem too coincidental. You get headless things crawling, hopping out of the ocean normally? Certainly, I feel a little taken advantage of, but I guess this way keeps the situation from being reversed. Which is good for any type of business. Anyway." Shava reaches into her jacket pocket, brushing Piztic, and pulls out a piece of paper folded into a letter. Adding four gold to her hand she offers both to the harbormaster. "Four undead means the top four people on the list."

"These are the good causes of my choosing. They're good women and men that have lost family to undead and are working hard to stabilize, but haven't haven't quite gotten there yet. Here's everything I got for helping kill an undead for each of them. Make sure to match the entire group's pay for destroying undead, like we agreed. A show of support from the patrol would go a long way.

Legothal Ealoelon
Versidhthor Norovir

"Huh, what makes you say that? Three years ago was something seen or destroyed that was giving commands to these lesser undead? Oh." She takes the two skellybro's bows from her back and places them on his desk. "They're not magical. I already checked. They seem functional, Baern's thigh is proof of that. Maybe you can put them to use.

Do you know what senses those hands had? I wasn't able to find out. I mean skeletons don't have eyes, usually, but they rely on sight. I wasn't sure if the hands used a type of sense that was comparable to vision without having the organs we have. I almost tried to use an illusion to trick one. Now, I'm not even sure if that would have worked."

"Oh, ****." Shava snaps her book closed. "I'd love to have a study session with you, but I've made other arrangements for the last couple hours of my day. Luckily, elfs don't sleep as long as other people." She gives a wink. "I've gotta go. Answer my questions next shift if possible. Later!" She disappears out the door with a wave as fast as she started her goodbye.

The groggy feeling she was waking up with was well deserved for the immediate, rough switch in her sleeping schedule. It was an unusual sight to see her familiar sleeping on her pillow since it's often still awake when she gets up. Her sleep carrying on for a moment more before her feet touched the floor. A yawn interrupting her first incantation, her second attempt succeeds to the effect of warm clothes against the cold floor. Making her way to the room's door she wedges it shut. Another casting and a ghostly hand checking the security of the wooden panels over the window. A weaved spell cleans her clothes instantly, giving them an almost new smell, before she even makes it back to bed. Taking a seat she takes her gloves off, inspects her arm, and preforms numerous chill touch castings. A magically warm shower in what she considered an over sized basin, sometimes being smaller had its luxurious advantages, left her ready to leave her room. She grabs a lunch, wishing the half-elf manager a good morning, and experiments by turning the bread and meat to different flavored sweets she was interested in making. Taking some notes and realizing there is no way she'd be able to bake anything with that type of flavor she tries not to let that sour thought bother her for long. Her new spell preparation is delayed as she stops inbetween her memorization to finish her meal, but the wasted time goes unnoticed.

She retrieves Hazel, her donkey, for today's shopping before stopping by a feed store on the way into the center of the city. The obvious foods are there as well as various animals and equipment they might use. A silver sees that she's able to feed some of the animals with some time tacked on for good measure. Buying a fish-jar she continues on until she meets up with Lourdes Caridad. A pleasant evening of mundane shopping takes place. The day eventually leading them to Fitler Square, one of better quality shopping districts. Here to invest in paint supplies, Shava gives Lourdes a glimpse into one of the gnome's favorite stores. Tysy CanvasArt Studio, ran by Jebeddo, was a shop Shava sorely missed. Tight for gold in recent times she happily greeted her friend. It'd be nearly an hour before she had decided on her purchase, and she might have stayed longer if she didn't notice Caridad growing impatient. The duo would spend the rest of their time together shopping for clothes and at Kyrsclys, an elven restaurant, Shava's treat since she still feels indebted to her new friend.

Returning with an hour to spare she stops by the docks to buy a live, small fish on the way to the tavern. In her room she sets up her new easel's back to the door with a fish-jar holding nightstand next to it. Palette in hand she starts to draw Daz's lightening breath from the night before. Chatting with her new fish, getting to know it while she paints. As the hour goes by, her charcoal lines half drawn, she gets a knock on the door. Must be patrol time. She grabs the fish-jar by it's strings and makes her way towards the door.

OoC: Shava is being kinda creepy. Her fixation with Daz will lighten up after she gets use to dragonborns. The newness of the dragon-like, elemental breathing creatures will eventually wear off.

About two hours before the end of your shift, however, you begin to wonder if the fish simply forgot, or if something happened to it. A couple of heads rise from the water. The near one is about waist deep when you spot it and the far one still up to its elbows.

There's summtin' out there, and it wants to test us, methinks, to find if we're weak, to tear us down.

I've got some answers to yer questions, by the by, little lady. Three years ago we was on guard - the attack came as it usually does, and we thought we was good for another five years. But we're here three years later - last week we had about seven show up, made it almost to the town gate - it's why we threw together shore patrol so haphazard this year. This ain't right, this year. A few hunnerd years ago was the last time we had an off schedule raid, a large mass o deadies, a thousand or so, washed up on shore in a five day period. They made it halfway through the city before they was put down, as me pappy tells it. They was led by summtin big, something we saw in the sky but which never came down enough for us to see it clear. On the ground there was ghouls and ghasts and all other kinds o nasties, and little crawling hands at all turns.

Those hands, I dunno much about them. The old harbormaster's notes say they know where ye are, but seein' as how they lack eyes I dunno how."

The screams and helpless cries of the soldiers and townsfolk echoed in his mind. "If only I had not...It will not happen again!" Flint resolves.
