The Second Tellurian Games
-Summer, 452-

All Guests note - any alliances or trades or betrothals can be merged into your action of attending the games, so long as you summarize all occurrences in your action post.

All rulers in attendance are invited to stay in one of the pavilions erected near the stadium for the purpose or in the houses of wealthy locals if any can be found. The local lord, the Krave of Bertalo, also has accommodation available in his keep, although this is limited.

Demonstration events from any realm are welcome. They serve as an opportunity for a culture to show off their most prized feats in a noncompetitive atmosphere.

Visitors in need of assistance are advised to ask one of the attendants in crimson hats, who will be happy to help. The goblin attendants are considered most reliable. Sylphids wearing crimson hats should be approached for assistance at guests' own risk: they will assist enthusiastically, but probably not very well.

Soikeia Stadia
Soikeia Stadia
Still under construction, the stadia comprise a complex of buildings in and around the town of Faraxham in northern Farridon.

The Soikeia arena proper is a great oval more than 1500 feet in circumference (460 Pryonic metres) The seating capacity is intended to exceed 25,000 when complete but due to the ongoing construction many seating areas are currently unavailable. Behind the seating areas, a curtain wall rises more than twenty feet high, built from red Farridon brick. Spectators may enter through any of the demarcated spectator gates (many named after sponsors or former champions) while contestants will follow a route lined with statuary through the Tailong Gate into the main arena.

While most events will take place in the Soikeia proper, duels may take place in one of the smaller arenas constructed around the main stadium or in the town itself, to allow spectators a better view and to reduce overcrowding in the main stadium. These vary from permanent structures of white limestone to apparently temporary constructions of wood.

Naval events can be observed from wooden spectator stands erected on the beach, or there are a number of spectator barges with viewing tickets available. Some local captains are also open to chartering boats for spectator use.

Instructions
For the duel tournament, challenge as many people as you would like and resolve each 3-round bout individually. Victory goes to the contestant with the greatest win/lose/draw ratio.

For all other events, roll the indicated number of times. Everyone competes in a single contest, as opposed to the challenge method above.

Feel free to ask me about any rules clarifications (or suggest changes! This is a perpetual work in progress).

Embrace the Anachronism
Feel free to make all of your rolls for the events as soon as you’d like. In the interest of letting people RP whatever they’d like, I think it’s a good idea to free ourselves from linear time. Your first post could be about something at the end of the Games or vice versa. Go nuts!

The small town of Faraxham in northern Farridon had been transformed over the last couple of years, and although much work remained to be done, the new buildings were just about fit for purpose in time for the Games. Many of the project managers had seemed to lose substantial amounts of hair during the process, especially during the last few days when the sounds of hammering and clanging had if anything built in a crescendo, but with what seemed like minutes to spare, the areas still under construction were roped off, the scaffolding came down, the goblin builders dissipated, and the town was halfway presentable.

The town was crowded with people from all corners of the kingdom: Jarrs, Venns, a couple of the huge Anacta, various representatives from the Valjaka and elves from Tuhiland, many of them leaving their province for the first time; dozens if not hundreds of sylphids from Tempestia, and the locals themselves: humans, goblins swarming everywhere, having been recruited either for the construction or for hosting duties, and even a few harpies, perched on rooftops and chimneys observing the events inscrutably - with the goblins giving them a wide berth.

King Alfmark had travelled from Horbeach to see the Games, the first time he had attended such an event. Dressed in finest silks and a fur-lined cloak, he sat in a makeshift throne on a rostrum in the town square, watching the constestants and guests assemble. When the appointed hour arrived, he stood, stepped to the front of the dais and raised both hands in a gesture for quiet.

"Welcome all to Faraxham and the Kingdom of the Carmine Sea. We are most honoured to host this illustrious Games, the eighth of its kind and the second to be hosted outside its Raaneki homeland. In honour of the Games' Raaneki birthplace, the first day and night of the Games are given over to revelry, and I hereby declare them open!"

The Caercian delegation arrived in the lands of their friends, allies, and brothers in arms the Carmine in resplendent fashion, riding groomed horses with braided laces of leather and linen in their manes and saddles with gold and silver embroidery done in intricate and exciting patterns. The retinue arrived too with barrels of Heartwine, being the preeminent southern importer of the national Raanekan drink and wishing to honor the legacy of the first hosts who had accommodated the Caercian's first forays into the international world. So too did they bring Cana, the relaxing drug bean that grew in the badlands of Palas Caercia and many more gifts and goods many of which were strewn about among the crowd as the delegation arrived. Toys for children, small coins of gold, sweet and salty treats, all that could be given freely by the prosperous western state to the people of the east who had helped them become so and in honor of the people of the north who had provided the venue and their unending generosity.

Despite the revelry and happiness however the more astute observers, those looking to the nobility rather than to the carnival around them might notice the hardened and worn face of the Lord Protector which grew ever harder whenever he looked towards the young man who rode out ahead and happily played alongside the other guests around the Stadium. Those who made it their business to know the royal members of foreign royalty would recognize the young man as Ji Caercia, adopted son of Markus Caercia, himself the son of the Lord Protector Cassius. It was no secret the Lord Protector held his grandson in low esteem and thus it was a bit of a surprise to see them traveling together without Markus though their maintained distance spoke volumes. Still ,the revelry of the rest of the delegation well obscured the shadow cast between the two Caercians and as they arrived properly and split off into groups the tense feelings seemed to dissipate slowly.

A single ship bearing the blue ringed flag of AQUA made the trip. They arrived quietly, making as little fuss as possible. Of course, in honor of the founders of the games, they came dressed in true Raanekan fashion. That is to say, wearing as little as possible in order to show off their life story, painted across their bodies in pictograms.

There were six 'nobles', if they could be called that. They were all in their late teens or early twenties. After letting the crew loose on leave, the six wandered. They considered themselves the unofficial judges of appropriate revelry, and were determined to uphold the standards of debauchery the games were founded upon.

By the evening of the first day, Alfmark was starting to reconsider his intention to host the Games. Jarrland in particular was no stranger to drunken revels, but the sanctioned, indeed, scheduled, entertainment had induced a celebration not seen in crown territory since at least the time of his wedding, more than thirty years previously. He liked the Raaneki, but, perhaps, some things were best kept in Raaneka. Still, it was reassuring that he'd made the right decision to entrust the Games to a small town rather than hold them in the capital. He'd have to do his best to keep out of the way of the Krave for the next few days: there were some things even a king didn't want to have to deal with.

snip

Alfmark greeted Cassius warmly: he had shared the man's obvious anxiety at the actions taken by the new Qzarina against the authors of the Salteire war, and, while he did not entirely share his fellow vassal's belligerent nature, he had nothing but respect for his martial aptitude.

"How fare things in Palas Caercia? Is Markus not with you?"

They considered themselves the unofficial judges of appropriate revelry, and were determined to uphold the standards of debauchery the games were founded upon.

The humans of Farridon were probably the most uptight of the Carmine kingdom, and this part of it was far enough off the major trade routes that Raaneki and islanders, relatively common sights in the rest of the kingdom, were relatively rare sights. As such there were a lot of local gawpers at the scantily-clad AQUA delegation, although some of the men attracted a more overt and enthusiastic response from some of the sylphids present.

Prince Athelwyr waded through the throng to find his "cousins".

"Welcome to Faraxham!" he shouted over the din. "Fancy a drink somewhere more private?"

***

Alfmark's eldest son, Prince Eldred, put his name down for the duels, and prowled the various arenas, scouting out potential opponents.

"Alfmark! My friend!" Cassius smiled at the Jarrland king and embraced him briefly, "A pleasure as always to venture into your lands. It all reminds me of those years ago when my father sent my sister and I to Raaneka. It seems so much has changed," he paused for a moment looking about before returning his attention to his friend and host, "Say, have you seen my sister about? It's been too long since I've seen her what with all the activities calling my attention in the Consortium."

***Elsewhere***

Ji smiled mischievously as watched the duelists begin to form up outside the arena. After a decent sized group of participants had gathered around the young man leaped onto the railing separating the arena from the casual spectators and preparing participants.

"I challenge each and every one of you who dares to face me to a duel, a Silver Dragon for the first man who bests me!"

With a flourish the youth leaped into the arena, brandishing his dull saber and entering into a combat stance, searching for any who might take his challenge.

The crowd certainly did not want the rowdy Aquans to go. The twin girls, Dominique and Emmanuel, were in the midst of organizing the locals to play some kind of contest involving white chemises and pitchers of cold water. They were also signing people up for some kind of relay race involving apples. But the local tavern-keep certainly was all for getting them out of the main floor, and offered a private room for the young nobles.

Athelwyr ushered the islanders into the private room. "Bring us beer!" he called to the barkeeper. "And vodka! And food! And my wife!" Each of these duly arrived in turn, first flagons of ale, then oysters, nuts and roast goose.

"Here, try some of the vodka," he said, passing round a bottle. "We get it in casks from Niskovia, but it's bottled here. Don't tell the Raaneki, but I think... in some ways, it's almost as good as Heartwine."

Eventually Lyra arrived too, a pretty Alorese woman in her early twenties. Athelwyr greeted her with an enthusiasm that might have been inappropriate in any other company: it was obvious he was completely devoted to her.

"So, are any of you entering the Games?" he asked his guests eventually. "I gather your mother competed in the Caragita a few Games back," he said to the Robsons.

Kondriix arrived quietly with the Lord Chancellor's procession. Irvest had never been much of one to meddle in Senatorial affairs, being consumed as he was with the duties of the Lord Chancellor and the drama surrounding his children and now with the Trial of the Chancellor approaching he had been even more distracting, having sent a form letter confirming his permission to allow the Kobold Senator to accompany the Triad retinue to the Games.

These Games were quite a statement, or at least, Kondriix hoped they would be. His letters had been sent out nearly four months prior and he had collated the responses to prepare himself for the speeches he would need to make but the anxiety around consulting with foreign administrators had plagued him the entire time. Never mind the pressure already weighing on the Maos-trained Grizzland Athletes around him to face the East in the competitions and bring home the prizes.

A lot of people back in the Provinces were awaiting news of the results, perhaps more than even had been 15 years ago when the games were actually held in Grizzland. The revelry around him did little to ease his tensions, especially as the dancing grew wilder and it became less and less safe to remain on all fours. He retreated to the pavilion Triad Architects had built specifically for the Triumviral retinue (there were always some benefits to helping with construction) and began to review his notes and statements once again as the rest of the retinue continued on with the Lord Chancellor. It was to be the second night that his meeting was to occur, he only hoped he was prepared.

The Water was broken with the sound of thunderous voices, and the backs of the Nix'darum. Their leader was held aloft in an oval shaped carriage of coral that shone in brilliant colors. The Nix carrying him marched diligently into town surrounded by the chorus and many craftsmen who brought from the waves all their hands had wrought; Beautiful sculptures, engraved tablets, and abstract pieces where marched into the contest, the questioning onlookers mostly silenced by the great display. As the craftpeople displayed their finest the Nix brought in ships to compete in the naval competition. These ships also brought in the Nixian athletes to compete, their strange qualities only sharpening their edge, or so was thought.

"She and Atheldynn are around here somewhere, probably supervising the entrants for the mounted race. I'll send a runner to fetch her. How are things in the Consortium?"

"Expanding," Cassius answered, "Our explorers are bringing back news on the back of soldiers returning from the most recent front it seems. The momentum from Minotron hasn't seemed to run its course yet and the army and the diplomats keep pushing out. This new land I've heard reports of is quite strange however, an empty expanse filled with giant rock forts but with no one living there. It makes me nervous, especially after hearing of your own southern front. Have you found out who those vile wretches were that struck at you? I would wager my men would be pleased enough to bloody another upstart's nose."

Eldred smirked. "A silver dragon," he muttered to himself. "I'll fight you," he called, and stepped into the arena.

Ji was young and energetic and knew the basics of swordplay, but the basics would not be enough. He held his own in the first round, even getting the first hit, but he was trounced in the second and by the third he had recovered but it was too late to make any difference.

After the fight the young man found the water trough and went for great gulps to refresh himself and restore his vigor. After a moment he addressed the man who'd beaten him,

"A fine show out there. I suppose you've earned this," he pulled a large silver coin from his pocket with a dragon inscribed on it and held it out to the other man, "I admit I really didn't think I'd be giving this away today. At least not this fast."

Alfmark greeted the Triumvirate delegation as they arrived. "I would welcome you to the venue, my friends, but under the circumstances I think perhaps you should be welcoming me. Your help with the construction has been much appreciated."

As the craftpeople displayed their finest the Nix brought in ships to compete in the naval competition. These ships also brought in the Nixian athletes to compete, their strange qualities only sharpening their edge, or so was thought.

The crowd was greatly impressed with the Nix effort in the naval battle, with much cheering as the strange creatures competed. As they were returning to shore, a captain approached Dorum to congratulate him. "A fine performance, sir, although I am curious - do your people have much need for ships? I should have thought that, living beneath the waves, you would find them rather cumbersome."

"Expanding," Cassius answered, "Our explorers are bringing back news on the back of soldiers returning from the most recent front it seems. "Not exactly, though we have heard rumours from the locals in the region." His eyes narrowed slightly. "I suspect that the two incursions we have faced were related, but that the people who undertook each were different. The first group were leaderless and disorganised, almost as if they were fleeing from something. Had the circumstances been different, perhaps we could have settled them all peacefully, rather than just the handful of survivors. This latest attack, though... that was a true military operation. If what the Tuhilanders say is true, then these latest attackers are most likely an ancient enemy of Lyradis, and possibly of my people as well. My nephew the Emperor and I have been discussing a southward expedition to discover more, since our scouts have not yet penetrated far into the glaciers."

He shook his head. "It seems the further south we explore the less we find, and the less we would want to. I am starting to wonder if the best solution would not just be to fortify our existing borders and withdraw behind them, lest we disappear over the edge of the world like the Na'nuk did all those years ago."

Eldred smiled and shook his head. "Keep it, and give it to a worthier champion. I suspect I only bested you through luck. Besides, a king's son has little need for coin." As if to demonstrate, he waved his hand and a servant hurried over with vodka and two glasses. "To what shall we drink?"

Wow, I wasn't expecting to win that!

Standings updated! A strong showing from the Nixdarum has them tied with Jarrland in the naval battle with a good score. General Caris is still the Caragita nonpareil, breaking Casca Pitch's 75-year-old record... can anyone displace her? Still all to play for in the duelling pits, with only one bout fought so far.

"Ah but of course! How could we stand to defend our-selves with weapon and physical strength alone?"

He paused, and moved for a handshake with the captain,

"These ships traverse the waves far faster than any Nix could alone. We have take great care of the few ships we posses because of their incredible value."

Dorum stepped down from his carriage to better converse with the captain,

"I did not get your name friend, what is it?"

Irvest didn't even notice Kondriix slinking off. Dissator, however, did. He made a mental note to have a word with the obviously ill-at-ease senator later. If he couldn't help the kobold feel more comfortable, then at least he could win another vote of confidence for when the trial rolled around.

It felt almost dirty, with his position as chief of staff giving him such great opportunities to improve his chances. Almost.

It's not as if we could have the games without a stadium! And from what I've heard of the Triumvirate Pavilion, we may have been helping ourselves with this one.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Dissator added.

Chieftain Pawondo Tayanya and his daughter and heir Elina An Tayanya and his son Hiykan An Tayanya arrived somewhat late at the festivities. They were dressed lighter than most around them, having shed much of their dressing as they'd journeyed south of Wenyavuk and even refusing to don them as the air became a bit cooler yet further south, insisting they enjoy the time in the more temperate weather. It had been many years since the Wenyavuk had ventured out of the artic north, so consumed had they been with matters of administration and organization before and following their incorporation into the Heartwaste Holds and greater Faedas but when the opportunity to attend the Games had presented itself Pawondo had made an argument that the peaceful face of the Wenyavuk needed to be seen outside the realm once again.

Pawondo was a bit of a strange figure, he was Heartwastian by birth but the frozen land of Wenyavuk was his home now and it showed in his speech and actions and he felt no hesitation in speaking for Wenyavuk and representing the Na'Nuk people, the ones who had remained when many departed, as one of them. Still, he had no doubt it was a bit of a confounding sight, and his half Serendel half-Heartwastian children themselves looked out of place representing the Na'Nuk which was why he was accompanied by a small group of Na'Nuk athletes from across the tribes who had come to compete in the glorious competitions themselves riding the Na'Nuk symbol known throughout Telluris, the Wooly Mammoths of Wenyavuk.

The fae Na'Nuk approached the Carmine King and smiled, "Your Majesty, we of Wenyavuk and Faedas thank you for your amenities so provided and look forward to the events of this gathering."

****Later****

Elina watched as Ji Caercia was trounced in the duel against the Carmine prince and at the subsequent refusal of the Carmine prince to take the coin she spoke up,

"I'll take that coin Southern boy!" she shouted, smiling mischievously and entering the dueling grounds.

****Later****

The Chieftain made his way to the appointed spot he was to meet with the Triumviral delegate who had requested a meeting, intent to hear the words of the powerful east coast realm.

"Perhaps you're right, but the Consortium is discontent to sit still and south is all there is without sailing out west again and trying to expand out of Nan Hai which seems itself to be growing into an increasing hotbed all its own with the discontent surrounding it's neighbors. I do wonder if the Qzarina has plans for enforcing the Imperium's will in the Far West, her grandfather certainly had grand plans but they seem to have been shelved by these subsequent generations. A pity really, my father had hoped Nan Hai would be the staging area for a resurgent bi-continental Imperium but it and Niemidaland just sit there without proper force put towards cultivating them."

The king smiled as Pawondo introduced himself. "It is a great pleasure to welcome you here. I am told my uncle was a great lover of the Na'nuk people and had long talked about inviting them to the kingdom. I am only sorry it has taken so long to arrange. Indeed, your arrival is perhaps timely, for as you may have heard, we have begun exploring to the south into the southern polar regions. Not only does this have implications for scientific discussion, but I suspect some of our explorers would be eager to converse with experts at travel in such cold climates."

He waved an arm out towards the town. "I hope you can enjoy yourselves at the Games, at any rate. This is the first time I have had the opportunity to attend one and I have been largely reliant on reports from my brothers - that is, my cousins -" he corrected himself - "as to the proper way to do things."

Alfmark nodded. "I too should like to see the Imperium make more use of its distant possessions, although there have been good reasons for the Heartlands to occupy more of the Qzarina's attention these last fifteen years or so. I fear war is forthcoming in both those corners of the world, and the Imperium had best be prepared. That said, I wonder if Hanyeo's dreams of expansion form part of the Qzarina's reluctance to make more use of them. Hanyeo is not fondly remembered in many parts of the Imperium, and not all his plans would do well if executed."

"Elina An Tayanya of Wenyavuk," the girl answered, smiling, "Now stop stalling, have at you!"

The fight was rather one sided in favor of the Caercian which was perhaps not so surprising considering the martial aptitude, or lack thereof, of the Na'Nuk. After two bouts of trouncing the elven featured girl raised her hands in surrender,

"I yield! You can keep your coin! But I suppose I ought to give you something in exchange for my defeat," she paused, smiling somewhat shyly and reaching to undo a chain around her neck, "Here," she held out the chain.

It was a bronze and steel alternating linked chain with a set piece Wenyavuk Amber hanging from it. A simple piece of jewelry, but well crafted.

"A memento of the far north for your first, and possibly only victory of the day," she grinned again with her last statement, her shyness disappearing behind the playful jab.

Ji cocked his head to one side as he looked at the girl and the necklace. As they'd been dueling he'd noticed she'd been focused more on his face than on his blade and he had to admit she had distracted him some himself, though his skill wasn't as easily lost as her own. Nonetheless he had felt drawn into her eyes and even now was looking a bit long at her dark pink irises.

"I can't take a lady's jewelry! That would be dishonorable! And not to mention I don't need your pity prize, the victory over future challengers will be the only reward I need," he grinned back, enjoying the playful jabs. Her words were much quicker than her blade and he appreciated the challenge.

Gun Huang was dressed the way a prince of the Imperium ought to be: in stately purples and ivory whites set with silver thread. However, he was also dressed the way a warrior ought to be: comfortable, practical, protective. He rolled his arms and shook his legs and jumped in place to warm himself up. His wrists and knuckles were bound in leather straps for the combat already, his legs largely bare halfway from the thigh down. The duels would be were he'd claim glory, but there was a different event he had set his eyes on where he would claim his legacy. He took a deep breath and sat down, crossing his legs. In front of him stood five clay jars, each filled with a differently coloured liquid with a pungent odour coming from them. Gun Huang took the first and drank it in one go, then moved on to the next. His scalp began to tingle by the time he'd finished the third and his skin felt like it'd come loose and begin the fight without him before he'd started the fifth. When he was done he shook his head, clasped his hands together and closed his eyes as other fighters in the waiting room looked at him oddly, but without recognition. "Our Father, who art amongst the moons, blessed be thy name, thy Imperium is, thy will shall be." He pressed his lips against a seven-pointed silver star pendant and tucked it in his shirt. The iron gates began to creak open. It was showtime.

He grinned at the fighter next to him as the first flash of the sun blinded him. "Time to tie."

The Second Night

OOC: This is a semi private meeting, though others may arrive initially only those invited are likely to be present.

Senator Valtis adjusted himself again against the wall, rubbing his scales against the stone to catch an itch that seemed to be creeping around. It was probably just as much of a nervous twitch as anything but the kobold couldn't help but feel a little uneasy. He was sitting in the Triumvirate Pavilion, an indulgent if useful building at the Stadia, though it had gone over some renovations the past few days prior to and including the arrival day of the Triad delegation. A great pit had been dug and subsequently filled with saltwater, an accommodation for the underwater Nix that they might attend. The great pool sat off to one side of the great domed building, domes being popular in Triumviral architecture, but around the rest of the circle sat chairs and cusions for various other delegates. Valtis himself sat in a small cushion that allowed his normally quadrupedal body to sit upright more comfortably.

He had been sure to send runners out to remind those who had responded of the time and place and purpose of the meeting and now he simply awaited their arrival that he might make his speeches, suggestions, promises, and arguments and find out if any others on Telluris would be willing to listen.

"Son of two Games champions," Eldred observed, as they waited to go out into the arena. "Does that give you an advantage, or just raise expectations? Care to try your blade against mine?"

"Former experts I'm afraid," Pawondo lamented, "The Na'Nuk who took to the ice fields those many years ago were those who knew the intricacies of travel further north, those that remained were capable only of travel into the less harsh lands to the south. I have heard stories of your uncle from the tribal elders and I have a high respect for the clan of Jarrow from their stories alone."
"I am glad my uncle is still fondly remembered in the north. Certainly the Na'nuk people remain close to our heart." He paused for a moment, seeming pensive. "When I was in Tuhiland we were attacked by a large enemy army which made use of what seemed to be boats of some description on the ice itself. It sounded rather like the stories of the old ice sailors of the north. I wonder if those people have developed something similar, and if so, whether we can acquire such knowledge from them." He frowned. "Sadly, from what I understand of them, I fear they will not be open to friendly relations or trade... but then again, once that would have been said of the Imperium."

The Second Night

"It has been a long time, hasn't it, my crystaline friend?"

"YES....MY FISTS....HUNGER..."

Wayve and Griënd casually walked through the crowd at the games, looking for some fun. Grïend was visibly excited due to the prospect of duelling once again.

Sipping from the flagon of Heartwine he brought, Wayve pointed at the fields where there appeared to be duelling going on.

"Well then, I would suggest you go sate that hunger. I'll dine on some fancy arts and some races myself. I'm sure Kenwyn can prove himself in the naval race. Especially now that the Gouju Engines are installed in the hovercrafts."

Grïend rumbled in anticipation.

"WELL THEN....MY LORD...I AM OFF...MAY ASHMAR SMILE UPON THY..."

Wayve broke out in a rather demonic smile.

"Oh trust me, I hope their gods will smile upon them instead. If they want to have at least a small chance of winning. Go get 'em champ!"

Grïend lumbered towards the fields, making his way to the middle. He waited a bit before he bellowed, his deep bellowing voice thundering across the fields and raising his body to his full five meter height:

"I AM...GRÏEND......DUELING CHAMPION OF THE...HUROSHA EMPIRE.....WHO IS BRAVE ENOUGH TO FIGHT ME?"

Meanwhile, Wayve made his way to the Art contest, submitting a finely craften armor, made by Helga Grimhammer herself, a fullplate of the finest adamantine and mithril, upon which a flight of Huroshan soldiers upon Mantids were engraved with great skill.

After that, he picked up his Mantid, Shi, from the stables and made his way to the Aerial races. Being raised a flyer, he had extremely good control over his Mantid, being able to steer his with great efficiency.

Maybe I should participate in the caragita as well after I'm done here, the Huroshan Emperor thought to himself. This is going to be a fun day indeed.

Wayve arrived at the apointed place clad in a long cloak, hiding his usual armored appearance, knocking to make his presence known. Despite the grave message, the atmosphere at the Games make him more cheerfull than usual. He decided to not make himself known, see how they would react to a Huroshan messenger. Who knows, might be usefull to know.

"The Huroshan Delegation is present. Do I have permission to enter? I've got the invitation."

Taking the invitation out of his pockets, the Shïnguard waited patiently.

OOC: biy, miss a weekend, miss a ton...

"So, are any of you entering the Games?" he asked his guests eventually. "I gather your mother competed in the Caragita a few Games back," he said to the Robsons.

"Well, the girls are going to enter the animal races." Said Phillip Grumby
"We like thoroughbreds between our knees." The twins said in unison.
Their brother glowered at them, "Twins. They're gonna be the doom of Telluris."
"We've talked Hot Lips into entering the Cargita." Dominique, or was it Emmanuel, said.
"The name is Margaret Jane Robson. And I want to compete, just like my mother did." The Robson girl added.
"Can we help it that cabin boy said you had the hottest lips he ever kissed?" Emmanuel, or was it Dominique, said.
"Cousins, please! Have some propriety!" John Francis Xavier Robson said. As the oldest of his family, he tried to keep some decorum.
Ignoring her brother, she replied to the twins, "Jealous? He did seem to ignore the both of you when you threw yourselves at him."
The twins eyed Athelwyr, "We think the Prince should judge!" Emmanuel and Dominique exclaimed together, ignoring his wife's shocked look.

Henry Braymore Robson, youngest child of Hawkeye Gruumby and Doris Robson, looked the part of a soldier. The Skipper-General had brought many innovations to the AQUA forces. Phillip was worried. This was his first diplomatic mission, and it was to be an informal one at that. He was to act as both an agent of the AQUA council and of the pirate/smuggler coalition his mother ruled.

He followed close behind the Huroshan delegation. "I too have an invitation."

***Inside After Everyone's Arrival***

****Later****

The Chieftain made his way to the appointed spot he was to meet with the Triumviral delegate who had requested a meeting, intent to hear the words of the powerful east coast realm.

Alfmark arrived at the appointed time, accompanied by one of his twin sons and a couple of naval officers. He walked with a cane, although those who had observed him the previous day would know this was an affectation. Glancing over the prepared area, he smiled and made his way over to the cushions.

"I fear my days of easy rising from such a position are numbered," he said, as he reclined into them, "so I shall make the most of the opportunity while I still can."

The kobold hummed a trilling greeting to the arriving representatives, the sound a pleasant quick melody as if played out of a flute.

"Greetings to you all esteemed representatives of realms far and wide, friends and allies of the Triumvirate. I am happy to see you all have chosen to attend this meeting," the kobold's voice was melodic, a trait of his people, and it carried well like that of a singer, "I will not mince words, your presence was requested here that we might discuss the issue of slavery prevalent in the lands of the Tzaltec and until recently present in the lands of the Glazfell as well."

The Senator paused, "Myself and my constituents find the whole affair rather horrifying and bleak. No other nation in the known world utilizes slaves to accomplish their goals. The fae of Nyroth did in ancient days, the Salterri practiced a modified form on prisoners, but those days have passed. No realm outside the Tzaltec practices such an arcane and ignoble art, not this day and age. It is, and the Triumvirate takes it as, an offense to all sentient life that the Tzaltec continue to flaunt the subjugation and indoctrination of the people within its own realm. It speaks to a cruel ruler, elevated by twisted means and borne on the back of thousands of innocents consumed in fire and blood. But as much as their actions offend a humanitarian mind it is not the Triumvirate's position to act as some crude military intervention that would only serve to sacrifice more lives. Instead, myself and my fellow Senators and those upon the Triad Council have composed a different stratagem to deal with the slavers of the east. Embargo."

"As much as the Tzaltec and the east may wish to act as islands independent of interaction with the broader world the fact remain that they are not, and it is the desire of the Triumvirate and myself to prove to them, through the cooperation of those who find their practices abhorrent, to prove that such will not be tolerated by the nations to their west. It is why I have asked you all here, to ask for your support in cutting off the Tzaltec from the rest of the world, to force a change by way of diplomatic and economic attrition. But before details of that are to be discussed, I must first ask, who among you is willing to stand for the subjugated men and women of Tzaltec who are given no voice and crushed under heel of the cruel and bloody Empire?"

Athelwyr grinned. "I fear I'd be a terrible judge, given my bias. I can't imagine any would surpass Lyra in my eyes.

"On the other hand," he said with a twinkle in his eye, "I'm sure my cousins would be more than happy to judge such a, er, contest. I think they should be joining us shortly."

A few minutes later, the king's sons indeed arrived, ebon-skinned twins with elven features and sparkling amethyst eyes. "Cousins!" Athelwyr called. "The ladies here require a prince to judge a question of honour."

"A princely judge, you say?"

"I think two would be better."

"A second opinion's always useful."

"Can't be too careful." They took seats next to Dominique and Emmanuelle.

"So what can we do for you, ladies?"

"What were you saying about twins?" Lyra muttered to Philip.

The party from Raaneka made an uncharacteristically low-key entrance as they came to see the latest iterations of the Games that had begun in their lands, the volume of other guests from all over the world partly overshadowing them. They regained some exposure - in more than one sense - during the evening revelry on the first night. While their performance in the following day's events was generally unremarkable, their berundas performed respectably enough in the aerial race, though dropped off the pace on the following legs, while the naval racer ran aground early on the return leg and finished well behind. On day three, the elephant was a predictable disaster in the mounted race, an early strong performance rapidly tailing off, although it still somehow managed to finish ahead of the Caercian horse.

On the evening of the second day, Jarad Sultana was heard rambling, deep into his cups, about the Huroshan "floaty-boxes" that had beaten his renowned sailors in the naval race, apparently cheating by hovering straight over the reefs that had defeated the Qarimosi, not real ships or anything, and was determined to regain some honour for the Empire of Dawn - and Qarimos in particular - in the naval battle. Indeed he led the ships to a great victory on the following day, through the teeth of what must have been an almighty hangover.

The mass melee was a predictable loss, with the genial Raaneki easily outperformed by the more militaristic peoples of the west and far east, although they held their own in the revelry portion. The real spectacle, however, came in the caragita. The fashion for athletes to compete au naturel had been quietly dropped when the Games moved away from Sarab, but the Raaneki competitors proudly revived it, generating outrage and cheers from the spectators in roughly equal measure. The actual result was largely beside the point.

I've borrowed Raaneka from Wombat for the occasion, since he's busy. Rolls are here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=18182323&postcount=1105) for the naval battle and mounted race, and here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=18182277&postcount=1104) for the others. There's an additional +2 on the Caragita rolls since they have Athletes, which I forgot about when rolling.

He should be thinking about his win/loss ratio, the populace was counting on him to pick up a "moral victory" over certain eastern nations... Screw it, he was here to prove the valor of the Triumvirate. His blade shifted again, blunting it's edge; it wouldn't do to use a non-regulation weapon, after all. His awareness expanded, his mind dulling until all that was left was his reflexes, and a vague notion of what was about to happen. He slowly walked to the center of the arena.

Despite having the early advantage, the General managed to briefly halt Grïend's assault and even push back, but the sheer strenght and size of the Menhîrin warrior won out in the end. Feigning a head-on charge, Grïend changed direction at the last moment, catching the General off guard and off balance. A huge armsweep later, the match was decided.

Grïend made a huge bow to his opponent, after which he rumbled:

"It's for that reason, and their position along Atlantica's east coast that they were invited, though from my communications with their Emperor's representatives Serendel is wary to become involved lest they lose their vaunted position of neutrality in favor of doing what is right and as you are all doubtless aware Guilder has only grown ever closer with the slavers. It is my speculation that their new Doge Buttercup disapproved of the mission to rescue Doges Vizini and Inigo from the far West due in large part to their connections with the foul Easterners accounting for the small detachment of Guilderene ships sent but that the position was pushed by the Tzaltec and the fleets of warships sailed through the peaceful Grand Canal and Straits of Diyu so that they might restore Vizini who himself possesses the blood of the Slaver King. Unfortunately I do not yet know who shall hold Dogeship in the east and I fear it may end poorly for the betterment of Telluris."

"But accounting for those unwilling to lend aid to righteous cause is an effort best avoided. That Hurosha will support our endeavors gladdens my heart. What of your others as representatives of your nations? Will you stand against the slavery of Tzaltec?"

Elina watched the young southern boy dash himself against Henry twice over, tying first and then coming out in a loss and she hid a grin when he returned.

"Perhaps you and I ought to vacate the dueling grounds, go and enjoy the rest of the festivities?" she suggested, reaching out to lightly grab his arm to tug him to follow her, "I hear there's games of luck run by vendors, perhaps you'd have more luck with those."

Pawondo sat quietly, contemplating the situation. On a personal level he felt an inclination to sign on with the Kobold's plan. He and Wenyavuk hated the idea of slavery, it was cruel and misfortunate and in a land where everyone needed to work together and respect their fellows just to survive the idea of subjugating many so that a few might prosper was very disconcerting. On the other hand though, the Queen and the Princesses especially had made it clear to him he was not to drive a wedge between Faedas and the Glazfell, which ostensibly siding against Tzalteclan might not do but he knew the eastern empires were close and an indictment against one became nearly an indictment against the other. That plus the Heartwaste's own somewhat nebulous moral stance on subjugation and slavery tempered only by Huroshan northern dominance and the fear of outcry from Galie-Noiret and Wenyavuk was a reminder that Pawondo's own morals were not applicable to the entirety of Faedas.

Nevermind the military of Faedas, that gem of protection he had once made as a promise of security to the Na'Nuk was in no state to be thrust into a position of conflict, and though Hurosha was supporting the measures Faedas' liege would only be so capable of spreading to defend so much.

"And what if the Tzaltec or their allies the Glazfell, whom I notice you've failed to address, or even the mad money marketers of Guilder decide to attack in retribution for this proposed embargo? What then?"

"SIR JI...WOULD YOU ACCEPT...MY CHALLENGE...?"

"Son of two Games champions," Eldred observed, as they waited to go out into the arena. "Does that give you an advantage, or just raise expectations? Care to try your blade against mine?"

Gun Huang's face was all bared teeth and sparking eyes. "Whichever it is, the outcome of the battle may well be decided by my opponents' eagerness to fight me, Carminer." He jabbed the butt of his orichalcum spear into the sand and drew a longsword shining silver with his other, yet its tip was dull. "Have at it, let's see whether my Ziu Daopian can beat your Sea Serpent."

"Gentlemen, I cannot official speak for AQUA. But I know their thoughts. AQUA believes slavery is abhorrent. It goes against everything they believe. Many on the council are close with the Grant-Tremblors. Their province of Neimediland sees this problem every day. I can assure you that words will not sway the slave-lords. And direct action will likely result in widespread conflict. But there is a third option."

"You fight well," Eldred told him at the conclusion of the bout, "but I wonder if the Ziu Daopian is flawed against the Serpent. This form was designed at least in part for fighting aboard ship, where unpredictable movement is commonplace, and is well equipped to counter the swaying which otherwise gives you an advantage over conventional warriors. Do any of your sisters know the Serpent style? Your mother was apparently a great proponent of it in her day; indeed, I believe she helped invent it. Perhaps more practice against such opponents would do you good."

A win for Eldred: 15/14/11

Grïend lumbered towards the fields, making his way to the middle. He waited a bit before he bellowed, his deep bellowing voice thundering across the fields and raising his body to his full five meter height:

"I AM...GRÏEND......DUELING CHAMPION OF THE...HUROSHA EMPIRE.....WHO IS BRAVE ENOUGH TO FIGHT ME?"

Eldred watched the famed Menhirin champion battle Henry and Dissator. An interesting and formidable warrior, to be sure, but he wondered if Grïend had become over-reliant on his reputation and his naturally intimidating presence. There was no reason a sufficiently skilled and prepared warrior should not defeat him, at least not in a friendly duelling arena. If he ever had to fight such a monster for real, he'd want more than a sword with him.

After Grïend finished thrashing the Tuorkey princeling, Eldred stepped into the arena to face him next.

"And what if the Tzaltec or their allies the Glazfell, whom I notice you've failed to address, or even the mad money marketers of Guilder decide to attack in retribution for this proposed embargo? What then?"
Alfmark nodded at Pawondo's words. "I have no truck with slavery, and this kingdom has long allowed privateers to raid Tzaltec shipping without censure. I am of course aware of, and greatly sympathetic to-" he gestured politely to Philip- "the historic struggles of our Niemidaland cousins. Any attempt to extirpate slavery is something I would - in principle - support, but matters are rarely so simple. The Glazfelli are our sworn friends and came to the aid of this kingdom when we needed it most, and I will take no action against them unless they give me cause to. We conduct no trade with Tzalteclan and hold no leverage over their empire, nor do we occupy any major trade routes we would be in a position to close, save those of the Pavonians - also our friends and allies - and the Imperium itself.

"Further, there are matters closer to home which require my attention and that of my liege. The Imperium is fractured and bleeding and requires attention. My southern border is threatened by a large and hostile army. I may weep for the plight of the oppressed slaves of the Tzaltec but they are not my subjects and it is to my subjects to whom my primary responsibility lies. If I can assist without endangering their well-being, then I would consider doing so, but it would be a dereliction of duty for me to place the concerns of foreigners no matter how wretched above the urgent needs of my own people."

He left his third concern unvoiced. While the abolition of slavery was a cause he could support without serious question, he feared the precedent it might set for one people to rule on the internal governance of others. How long before a reformist party in the Triumvirate declared monarchy an abomination? They had already toppled their own royals. It was not too hard to imagine a similar gathering with earnest Triumviral senators, Buttercup or some other Guilderene interloper sitting in his place, discussing embargoes against the Imperium or his own kingdom for refusal to adopt their form of government.

"In short, Senator, I am sympathetic with your goals, but I fear sympathy might be all I can offer." He gave a slight smile. "Moreover, I have dealt with too many politicians to allow myself to agree to a course of action without hearing precisely what would entail. I am not untutored in the artistry of rhetoric."

"Moreover, I have dealt with too many politicians to allow myself to agree to a course of action without hearing precisely what would entail. I am not untutored in the artistry of rhetoric."

"It was my assumption that the stick of the situation would arise from a desire to elevate one's own people before concerning one's with another, a sentiment I can certainly understand and was the basis for my proposal that saw limited commitment across a wide spread so as to, through cooperation, limit the burden on any single nation. What I would ask of Carmine is simply not to allow Tzaltec traders or those headed to Tzaltec lands pass through Carmine territory, as you note the only likely candidates are the Pavonians and the Triumvirate has worked with your fellow vassal Mularuhm to see to the Pavonian's resource desires are fulfilled without Tzaltec interaction. If Carmine and the rest of the nations friendly to our cause along the coast close off their paths to Tzaltec traders and, if Guilder does not fall prey to nepotism and puppetry then we together can cut off the Tzaltec from the rest of the world with only the commitment already needed to monitor trade routes through the territories under our eyes."

"As to Glazfell, it is true, I have avoided the subject of the expansive northeast only because I do not know how they shall react. Thanks to the work of Doge Buttercup the trafficking of slaves north from Tzaltec lands was stopped and for what it was it was a good step. If they can be relied on to follow through on full economic embargo then it shall be clear whether the Glazfell Hegemony values its relations with the rest of the world or the slavers of the south. I suspect they should act as a sensible sovereignty, recognizing and cooperating with the larger world rather than forcing war with those who ought not have it over a realm to whom they have no familial or close geographical connections, but I do not know the minds of the reclusive northeasterners and so I do not rely on speculation though I hope I am true."

Phillip was a bit hesitant. He was acutely aware of his youth with these elderly statesmen. "King* Alfmark has already touched upon the third choice in passing. His lands have long turned a blind eye to raids on slave ships, allowing the privateers to keep the cargo in exchange for freeing the slaves. But there is so much more that can be done. Officially issue Letters of Marque to those independent ships and" he turned to look at the Triumvarite Sentaors "trading Guilds that wish to free slave ships and caravans. Declare any additional cargo seized in these raids as fair property. Open ports and border forts to thosebearing these letters, and block Tzaltecan's in pursuit."
His tone became more certain, "It is the middle step between going nothing and waging war. And it will put pressure upon Guilder where it hurts the most- their pocketbooks."

* ooc= I forget if Alfmark is still king, but Philip would know, so assume he got the title correct, please.

The Kobold Senator let out a quick succession of chirps before speaking, "The thought was suggested by more martial minded Senators, but to do so might very well draw a true war, something we had hoped to avoid. Unleashing privateers may seem fair game but how long until the Tzaltec Empire vindicates war over failing to reign in these ships and the blockading of their own warships in pursuit. To pursue that path is, ultimately, to pursue war. I admit, the embargo may prompt the same, but blocking trade and attacking ships put the Tzaltec in two very different positions for choosing how they will respond."

The Glazfelli presence at the Tellurian Games is small, with mostly merchant tourists and the occasional bored Noble heir present. Many do not bother participating at all, though some do simply to say they took part.

General Caris of Psilberg, of course, is recognized by some of the older natives as King Khyne's most elite advisor during the Wildling incursion a decade prior, and she does well for herself in the Caragita and in several other events. Much to her chagrin, her record-breaking Caragita performance was quickly matched by Gun Huang of the Salterri Imperium for a tie in the lead. It's up to the hosts to figure out how to resolve that, though.

Finally, a number of couriers from Glazfell are present. Some carry simple correspondence of the classic day-to-day type, the only difference from mundanity being that today's path takes them through the illustrious events. Some work for the merchants, helping to move goods about. Two, however, are from King Ghalle Daan herself. The first is simple enough, a letter for King Alfmark apologizing for her absence from the games and wishing well for her mother's side of the Family, along with a basket of fine Skarvali spices and a lovingly-crafted amulet: A chain of silver attached to an eyeball-sized Tear of Yphine. The worksmanship is amateur and very likely done by the King herself, but it came out well enough that it could be added to a jewelry display or worn without issue.

The second scroll is somewhat more portentous. It comes in the possession of a Frosten Royal Courier wearing a suit of mail and a tabard emblazoned with the crest of House Daan, who seeks out Emperor Wayve of Hurosha. If he is barred from approaching the Emperor, he simply offers it to the barring guard and asks that it be delivered. If he is able to meet the Emperor properly, he unfurls the parchment and reads from it directly and as publicly as possible. In either case, the letter reads as follows.

Emperor Wayve Earthguard of the Hurosha Empire,

We of Glazfell are shocked and appalled by the recent actions of the Hurosha Empire.

First was the unprovoked invasion of Pryonia, a historical ally of Hurosha then betrayed. When the invasion was repulsed, Pryonian independence was ended peacefully via the partitioning of Pryonia. The House of Cardion was stripped of all its lands, and those lands split between the Houses of Divinorum and Varinel, by the order of Emperor Wayve Earthguard. The Free State of Pryonia ceased to exist, betrayed by its supposed Huroshan allies.

Second was the partitioning of the Kingdom of the Burning Mountains, another historical ally of the Huroshan Empire. When the House of Gunung swore loyalty to Hurosha and agreed to become its vassal, Emperor Wayve Earthguard stripped all lands save the far western region of Intepeuh from the House of Gunung, granting the fief of their namesake to himself and granting the remainder to the House of Divinorum.

Third was the final betrayal of the House of Gunung. When Intepeuh was occupied by Ashenian banners, the Hurosha Empire stripped the former regions of the Kingdom of the Burning Mountains of their military levies and posted them inside the Huroshan Heartland, where they could do nothing to fight the Ashenians. Emperor Wayve Earthguard chose to turn a blind eye to the plight of the House of Gunung, left with only a single fief and no army. With the Ashenian conquest of Intepeuh, the once-great House of Gunung was left landless and powerless thanks to the actions of the Hurosha Empire, and the Kingdom of the Burning Mountains ceased to exist.

Pryonia was a friend to Hurosha. They fought together during the Great Tellurian War and were formal allies as part of the Grand Coalition until Hurosha's invasion. The Kingdom of the Burning Mountains did the same, and the House of Gunung trusted Emperor Wayve enough to swear undying loyalty to the Hurosha Empire. Pryonia's Friendship and Gunung's Loyalty were both rewarded with total ruin. If this is how Hurosha deigns to treat its partners and allies, the Glazfelli Hegemony wishes to be neither a partner or an ally to the Hurosha Empire.

Speaking on behalf of the Glazfelli Hegemony, this is a Notice of Embargo. Glazfell and all vassals thereof are hereby forbidden from further trade with the Hurosha Empire and its vassals. All ongoing trade is to be cancelled immediately and indefinitely, with exception of the Hold of Faedas: Due to the Heartwaste's current reliance on Frosskovi Wood and the terms of the Pax Varinel promising an ongoing supply of True Ice for Bloodfire research, the subjects of the Throne of Thorns will be spared the effects of this decree.

Additionally, let it be known that all fellow Lords and Ladies with respect for the Houses of Cardion and Gunung and disdain for Hurosha's betrayal of its own allies are welcome to join with Glazfell in this embargo, should they wish to grant their fellow noble houses the honor they deserve, in their own Kingdoms and all others.

Regards,
~ Ghalle Daan, Lord of the Glazfell

(If forced to give up the letter, the courier later reads a copy of it somewhere public where word will spread quickly from. Unless of course someone kills him, but that would definitely be treated as breaking sacred hospitality and an act of war given his official business.)

Raiding shipping will be less risky, since they cannot pursue well. A blockade will allow ramming techniques that are beneffited by rowers. "It would not be the position of the Triumvirate to dissuade such tactics if they were pursued, but it would be our policy to act only as blockade fleets and not active aggressors," the kobold senator's voice seemed to have shifted reflecting a change in thought, "As a matter of point, perhaps your suggestion has more merit than did when I discussed a similar proposition only among my Senatorial peers. FATS and other less aligned organizations which are effectively removed from direct retaliation might be able to harass Tzaltec ships more easily and retreat behind the sails of those who consented to act as blockaders."

"Of course, even with your support, the support on whom we are most greatly reliant is the noble Empire of Dawn and its vassals, though their lack of attendance in these matters disturbs me greatly.*"

"Don't flatter yourself," Elina reprimanded him with a smile, "You got all the action you were going to get in the arena. You remember, all those much tougher men beating you up?"

Before their light hearted bickering could continue the two young people heard the voice of a crier and Elina stopped to look and listen, it was a Frosten, and it sounded like he was denouncing Hurosha. She swallowed hard, she didn't know if her father had heard it but she knew the Queen and the Princesses would. It made her nervous and a sweat broke out on her brow but she quickly wiped it away and turned back to Ji.

"Let's go to a tavern huh?" she asked, pulling him away from the small crowd of listeners and towards the nearest establishment.

The Tzaltec delegation arrives in unexpected style, aboard a trio of sleek, black-ballooned zeppelins. The red wooden bodies of the fling craft were polished to a mirror sheen and accented in gold, betraying the seriousness with which the Tzaltec regarded their first appearance at the venerable Games. All manner of exotic peoples and objects emerged from the shadowy holds, and were given a wide berth by the Carmine dockhands.

Games Rolls (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=18180343&postcount=1099)

Surely the most striking thing to emerge from the Tzaltec holds was a serpentine gold fountain, depicting a pair of naked women entwined around a central pillar of sinuous gold fire. It was a fine piece of workmanship, though of minor note compared to the other objects entered in the Arts Contest. It would have drawn scant praise, had it not been followed by sealed casks of livefire. The living flame was emptied into the fountain's basin and tended to by a dozen crimson-robed acolytes. Chanting and moving in unison, they brought forth monsters from myth and legend to play along the golden skin of the naked women even as fire cascaded down them like a gown. It was a striking effect, but their control was flawed, and from time to time the figures would contort into shapeless blobs. Not enough to win the contest, but a potent sign of things to come nevertheless.

Tzalteclan finds no more luck in the aerial or mounted races, where their rider's inexperience with a purchased Beruda and the rarity of horses in Tzalteclan takes center stage, with both riders pushing their mounts too hard for the sustained pace of the Games. Still, a towering horned athlete from Amocuallan gives an impressive performance in the Caragita, seizing the lead in both foot race and long jump. Alas, it is not enough to overcome the efforts of Saltierre and Guilder.

It battle, the Tzaltec are more successful, seizing victory in the mock melee with a squad of elite Dragon Knights from the heartland. However, the devout warriors find themselves confused by the ritualized war cries that begin the combat, and in the boisterous exchange that ends it. Meanwhile, a force of Tzaltec xebecs faces the might of nations with far more established navies and manages to emerge in the middle of the pack.

The Arena

As a momentary calm settles on the arena, the combatants notice the arrival of a new face amongst the challengers. He is tall, and more handsome than a warrior ought to be, with the skin and hair of a Tzaltec and the golden eyes that suggested he was son to the Teotlkan himself. He was dressed in red leather with golden buckles over black silk, with the badge of Tzalteclan pinned over his heart. He wore no weapon, but beside him stood an unassuming man in drab burgundy and black, carrying a long case of black lacquered wood. Seeing he had the assembly's attention, the young man pushed against the wall and moved forward with the agility of a viper.

"Even in Tzalteclan we have heard of the prowess of Hurosha's living mountain. I would see it first hand."

On a quiet afternoon, the AQUA delegation gathered for a picnic overlooking the harbor. With them came many associates and friends. The group of young ones had attracted a crowd of boisterous and lascivious young folks. With them were several who had trained at Tar’s monastery for aeromancers.
As they looked down the hill towards the city, they noted the Tzalteclan zepplins and the slaves and soldiers tending to them.
“What a bunch of Ponos” Phillip groused.
“What do you know?” His elder brother John Francis rebutted, “You only know what our southern cousins tell us.”
“They abuse those people from birth to break them. They are arrogant monsters.” Dominique Grumby said.
Their older brother spoke up, “It isn’t so much the slaves. The Mother knows we have all seen serfs living in squalor. It is the hubris and arrogance of their leader.”
“Bunch of sand grubbing, mud dwelling primitives. They use an army of slaves and brainwashed assassins to keep power" countered Emmanuel
“Look at them. Arriving in style, as if they created those zepplins. Living off the wonders of others.”
“It’s amazing Guilder puts up with them.”
”Zepplins are no better than horse drawn carriages. Big balloons pulled by monsters.’”
”Well, flying thunderbeasts.”
”Potato, tomato.”
”Someone should take them down a peg or two.”

Ji looked at Elina in confusion as they walked, "What's wrong? That didn't sound like it affected you or yours. What's the concern?"

Grïend didn't prepare for such a quick opponent. When he regained his stance and could fight back decently enough, it was already to late. He rose a stone fist to indicate that he lost.

"STOP...I HAVE LOST......YOUR PROWESS IS GREAT INDEED..."

Suddenly, he rumbled in laughter.

"YOU GOT ME...MAN OF THE JARRS.......IT HAS BEEN AGES SINCE I FOUGHT...THIS WAY...MY CONFIDENCE...WAS MY UNDOING......THANK YOU...FOR THIS LESSON..."

Grïend looks down upon the golden eyed Tzaltec, no emotion to be found either on his crystaline face nor his stance.

"HHHMMM...TZALTEC......VERY WELL...I WILL ACCEPT YOUR CHALLENGE..."

Grïend lowers himself into a battle stance, ready to fight.

Which style do you use? Because I do not see a style made by you in the Scrolls of Prowess. As such, your bonus would only be +5.

*Snip*

(If forced to give up the letter, the courier later reads a copy of it somewhere public where word will spread quickly from. Unless of course someone kills him, but that would definitely be treated as breaking sacred hospitality and an act of war given his official business.)

The messenger is allowed near the Emperor, who, upon reading and hearing the letter, bursts into laughter.

"Really? Is this his farce all you Glazfell can come up with? The Prowess of your people is severely lacking. So much even it is embarrassing. Go back to your frozen wastelands messenger, and tell your lord this: due to his lack of intelligence upon this matter and his hypocracy, he made a powerful enemy today. From now on, every Glazfell, Sympol and Tzaltec that enters within the Hurosha Empire without the explicit permission of the ruler of Hurosha, Faedas or Calorum shall be emprisoned on charge of espionage for 10 years, after which they will be released at the border with Sympol. As for the Embargo, I will repay your lord in kind. Go now, get out of my sight."

When the courier is gone, Wayve turns to Kenwyn.

"Kenwyn, I need Aitah and the Ambassador of Pryonia here, before tomorrow. Can you manage that?"

"Can a bird fly, my lord?"

"Good, see to it."

Next Day

In the middle of the crowd, the Huroshan delegation puts up a stage, as to put attention to it's speakers, Aitah II of the Burning Mountains and Rengal Cardion of Pryonia. As soon as the stage is put up, they take the stand, visibly pyched up about something.

Aitah II speaks up first.

"Dear people that hail from all corners of Telluris, may the Lord of Fire enlighten you. My name is Yirilzin Aitah II, son of the late lord of the Burning Mountains, Topiltzin Aitah I. Yesterday, you may have heard about the Glazfell condemning the Huroshan acts as my father's kingdom. Seeing it as a betrayal of Hurosha against the Burning Mountains."

Aitah II seems to shiver with rage for a moment.

"When I heard about this, I couldn't remain silent about this hypocracy, this BLASPHEMY! THESE.....MONGROLS WHO WORSHIP THE COLD KNOW NOTHING!"

With a deep breath, the fire berapi regains his composure.

"I will tell you all the true meaning behind Hurosha's actions. For 20 years, my father lay ill, unable to perform his duties. In his place, the nobles squabbled over his power, all hungry and delusional. But how hungry they were, they were cunning. They prevented any information about my fathers health from leaking out, making it seems that everything was fine within this once proud kingdom. Until the wildling invasion of Intepuh. Both the Huroshans and Ashenians came to our aid, stopping the invasion. However, something worse came to light: my father had been dead for 3 years prior, and the outside world was never the wiser. My Emperor and friend, Wayve Earthguard, purged the corrupt nobles from Gunung, attempting to restore everything to it's former glory. Alas, 20 years of corruption left its marks to deeply. My brothers were slaughtered by those who saw them as a threat, my sisters married of to small houses to thin the royal line. I am the only one left of the proud house of Aitah.

The Glazfell say I am now without lands. I want to correct them on that. Is a vassal stripped of all his lands when he accepts a liege? I am certain the Ambassadors of Hurosha would differ. I, the heir of the Burning Kingdoms, am still in control of all its land, barring Intepuh.

When Hurosha liberated the Burning Mountains, all nobles fled to Intepuh, far away from the control of Gunung. As far as we know, they still reside there, awaiting their return. That was the primary reason Intepuh was handed to Ashenia, because now, they cannot claim any power any longer. But without a ruler nor people fit to rule, Gunung and its lands were left in shambles. Calorum gracously offered to let us join under the protection of the Lord of Fire, an offer which we accepted with both hands. However, that would still leave Gunung itself quite void of a guiding hand. Therefore, Emperor Wayve is fixing the internal stucture of Gunung, both in the material sense as in the spiritual one. After it has been done, Gunung will be allowed to join Calorum, creating one big Kingdom of Fire once more. With the threat of Ice looming in the east, the ones who welcome the warmth of the flames must stand resolute and united, otherwise the world will be consumed in ice."

Aitah raised his hands up to the air.

"As such, hear me! The Glazfell betray your ears with lies and deception! Hurosha did not betray us, they helped us in our greatest time of need! Thaw the ice that blocks common sense with the warm embrace of the Lord of Fire!"

With these words, Aitah left the stage, making way for a middle aged man, Rengal Cardion.

"Hail, people of Telluris. I am Rengal Cardion, Ambassador of Pryonia. Much that applies to me, Aitah here has already said. Pryonia willingly accepted the embrace of Calorum, for we aswel hunger for the embrace of the Lord of Fire. However, there is one thing in this....letter, if you can call a bundle of lies that, that is written by such a hypocrite that is makes me puke."

The Pryonian held up the letter.

"They speak of the Huroshan betrayal of my country. Of the betrayal of Calorum of my country. But Faedas was the one that attacked Galie-Noiret. And yet, they are spared the brunt of the reprecussions. From what this is based on, I cannot say. I have spoken hours with the Emperor about this matter, and he agrees that the invasion of Galie-Noiret was a poorly thought out action. But not by his hand. By Faedas' hand. As the fact that I am too stripped of my lands, I am no longer in control of Galie-Noiret, that much is true, but I am still in charge in Pryonia. However, I now have the guidance of the Blazing Avatar herself to help me stay on the correct path. Would the Glazfell deny me that aswell? They would ask me to reject my own god? I read reports what they did to Sycia. Is that any different? They needlessly absorbed their own ally as well, and now have the GALL to accuse us? I have nothing more to say accept this: Glazfell, you who worship the Demon of Ice, your minds are clouded by the cold you all hold so dear. So keep your delusions to yourself. That is all."

After these speeches, the two Ambassadors get off the stage and disappear into the Huroshan test. Finally, Wayve comes up stage, speaking one short final message.

"You heard these gentlemen, passionate about the One who Guards Fire, accepting the helping hand that we extended. I acknowledge that we have made mistakes in our methods, but compensation and forgiveness have already been given. This letter is so unProwessfull, that I will speak to the Glazfell king like this. He doesn't deserve a written reply if this is the way he handles things.

King of Glazfell, I am a reasonable man. I invite your to talk with me about this...embargo of yours, to find a solution, as difficult as it may be. You and an escort of 5 will have permission to cross Huroshan lands, only as a group, to meet me in Zargrim, at the Castle of Spirits, in exactly two months time from now. You have my oath under the everlasting vision of Ashmar, that you and yours will not be harmed in any way. However, if you send a representative instead, I will see that as an act of treason and war."

After this, Wayve also enters the Huroshan encampment.

Pawondo was in attendance of the Hurosha Empire's platform and he listened intently to the speeches. At Rengal's speech he raised an eyebrow and he felt a sense of worry come over him. The accusation and deflection of blame to Faedas may have been an accurate one but the Chieftain wondered how the silent endorsement of that opinion back in Faedas might be taken. After all, Hurosha had aided in the conquest, seemingly picking Faedas as its newer and more valuable ally over the Cardion. That the Emperor would then turn about and by complicit silence condemn Faedas for those actions through Cardion's words was a slippery slope. Pawondo understood the Emperor's desire to attempt and refute the condemnations with facts, but deflecting blame onto Faedas was unlikely to hold up well among the nobles of the Heartwaste or the Aristocracy of Sanctuary. Valineth would support her husband and bear the blame responsibly he imagined, she was one of a few good fruits borne from the tree of Varinel, but others might be less forgiving. He could only hope his speeches to the Queen and the Princesses would keep any such sentiments from growing too volatile.

Irvest, who had up until now had been watching to proceedings quietly, stepped forward and raised his voice.

Now Emperor, I am afraid I must play devil's advocate. Let us assume, for a moment, the viewpoint of a hypothetical person who hates Hurosha, has a vile temperament, and is extremely misguided. How would such a person look at this comparison?

The Lord Chancellor turned towards the Tzaltec.

Unless his mental faculties were severely impaired, even he could not fail to note that the Huroshan's do not murder thousands of their subjects in the hopes of pleasing some mad god. So even from the worst possible viewpoint for Hurosha, they are superior to you. What then, from a more reasonable standpoint, would the comparison appear as? Something like the relationship between dung and a sculpture of platinum? Having great personal experience with Hurosha, I would venture that the disparity is even greater than that.

Response to Glazfell

As the Huroshans made their speeches, a middle-aged woman with white hair watched from the back of the crowd.

"This situation could become dangerous, my lady," her attendant said, trying to urge her away from the crowd.

"Don't be foolish, nobody's going to be stupid enough to start anything serious here, now." She shook her head. "If my niece knows nothing it is because she has been told nothing. It is all very well for the king to stand there and denounce Ghalle's hypocrisy, but Sycia and Sympolemou have not been invaded, stripped of their armies and partitioned. Ghalle will not have been the only one to think these things, just the first to speak up."

She sighed. "I fear the Emperor has misjudged this response. If this was a misunderstanding as he claims, then better surely to offer explanation and suggest reconciliation, rather than escalate and threaten. Unless she is nothing like her parents I cannot imagine Ghalle responding well. And has he forgotten that Huroshan troops joined Galie-Noiret in their invasion? He throws his wife to the wolves of public opinion, but his own hands are hardly clean. That was a pointless war."

"My lady, please."

"Oh, very well, if it will keep you quiet."

"I was told to keep you safe, my lady."

She smiled mischievously. "I can keep myself safe well enough, and I haven't stabbed anyone in years."

"Yes, we believe that now was the perfect time to show our selves, as there is no need to hide from the world."

"Perhaps it is," Gun Huang acknowledged begrudgingly. Though his mother was a Jarrow, he felt like losing to a non-Heartlander damaged his sense of royal superiority. He wouldn't say that to the man's face, nor would he speak of it that he had chosen the style because his father had been master in it. Using it was like connecting with a great man whom had disappeared before he had been born, and died within hours of having resurfaced, at the hands of a lunatic terrorist.

"My sister Fengbao practices the Serpent often, but she had little time for practice with her brother. Greater responsibilities come first."

*******SOME OTHER TIME DURING THE EVENT*************
The AQUA party continued, going into its thrid or fourth day. No one was really paying attention much anymore.. Food, friends, entirely too much alcohol, all the trappings of a Raanekan feast in honor of the founders of the games. Evening was starting to set in, and several people were considering putting on the clothing that was discarded earlier. Others discussed a bonfire.

But the twin trublemakers, Dominique and Emmanuel, were still simmering about the Tzalteclan discussion earlier.

Dominique addressed the man who was more or less wrapped around her, “Sweetie, do you think your special talents can reach to those zepplins.” The man whispered something in her ear, and she gave him a gentle shove. “Not that talent.”

“How about you, sweetie?” Emmanuel said, looking across the broad chest of a local man to the woman opposite her.

The woman stood up, a bit unsteadily. She looked out at the Zepplins, She closed one eye and bobbed her head a bit. “I think I could stretch to reach those things. They are so big.”

The local man muttered something about him liking them big, to a few laughs. But the girls were serious. When the twins wanted something, they managed to get it. Before long, they had managed to convince the three aeromancers to combine their talents and see if they could knock those big balloons off their moorings.

The three of them sent to work. Night was falling, and the cool air was rushing down from the sky, the hot ground pushing warm heat up. They gathered the random airlflows, guiding them into thicker and stronger currents. Slowly, they were able to bend the airflow into a strong upward breeze, pulling in from all sides and jetting up into the sky.

As the rest of the onlookers watched, the updraft moved quickly across the one candle or so that separated their party from the Tzaltecs. It hit the zepplins with a strong downdraft first, pushing them almost to the ground. Then the concentrated updraft hit, ripping them upward with the force only nature could proved. The moorings went from slack to taught in secods, snapping the stakes out of the ground.

The crowd cheered as the zepplins floated up and away from their tenders. The laughter casused the aeromancers to lose their focus, and the wind lost its direction. Still, the damage was done as the oversized balloons drifted away on the night breeze. It would take the tenders hours to saddle up their flying mounts and catch them in the darkness of the coming night.

That evening, Kenwyn looked outside, to the Tzaltec zeppelins that were flying away, gently swaying in the swaying breeze.

"Should we provide assistance, my liege?" The Bucka said, his voice full with mockery. The goblin was one of the greatest opposers of the Tzalteclan slave trade, his people having been enslaved by the dwarves for a hundred years.

A little smile flashed over Wayve's face . "I think you know the answer to that one, my friend. Let our AQUA friends have their fun. I mean, without their and the Triumvirate's assistance this afternoon, things might have turned out more grim for us."

Wayve's face turned into one of internal pain.

"I never would have imagined Cardion having the gall to put the blame on Faedas. I can understand his anger, but this is just preposterous. But what is done is done. We can only hope to salvage as much of this situation as we can. And prepare for fighting. The Glazfelli and their infernal allies have made the first move. I reckon it will not be long untill they follow up on their little embargo and use the whole charade in a more violent way. Even if they do not, it can not hurt to be prepared."

"So you are not planning to take the offensive, my liege?"

"Humphf. No, I will not be made the aggressor once again. Let them come. Let them make us the martyr instead. Let us show them what Hurosha is all about."

"Prowess in everything, my lord?"

Wayve stared up to the night sky, the zeppelins drifting farther and farther away.

"Oh yeah. And lots of it."

Day 5, Soikeia Stadium

An array of distinguished competitors assembled for the caragita, the showpiece of the Games, including Li Gun Huang Jarrow, the son of two former Games champions and of whom great things were expected, the Emperor of Hurosha himself, and the famed Maos-trained athletes of the Triumvirate, as well as representatives of half a dozen more realms from all over Telluris.

It was the Tzaltec competitor, however who stood out in the foot race, edging out Li Gun Huang to reach the tape first, with Caris of Psilberg and a Triumvirate sprinter tying for third. The Tzaltec won the long jump too, followed by Margaret Jane Robson, herself the daughter of a former duelling champion, although she was to be unable to build on that performance in the other events. Wayve finished disappointingly in both events: as he ran in for the jump the Raaneki in the crowd were waving, trying to indicate that his wings would provide too much resistance for him to build up real speed, and so it proved - he might as well have been competing in his usual full armour.

In the javelin, the Triumvirate initially seemed to have won cleanly, their thrower landing a mark a clear foot ahead of the spears from Gun Huang, Caris and Tzalteclan Even as their spectators were toasting their victory from the better seats, all were shocked when one of the Raaneki, who had until now had a relatively uneventful Games on land, matched it with almost the last throw of the bout. The applause was riotous.

By the time the wrestling came round, it was still all to play for: Tzalteclan and the Triumvirate held a lead, but were closely pursued by Caris, Gun Huang and Prince Eldred from the hosts. It seemed that the exertions of the Tzaltec had got the better of him in the previous events, however, and he was dumped out relatively early with a respectable but not invincible score. Eldred too appeared exhausted, and failed to win even a single bout.

Gun Huang and Caris, however, appeared to have been saving themselves for the last event and went undefeated, while some of the older spectators reminisced about how Tailong too had seized victory in the wrestling over forty years before. Wayve, meanwhile, was in his element, defeating opponent after opponent until eventually he came face to face with Caris. Each of them already having tied with Gun Huang, they held nothing back in the final bout, wrestling to a complete standstill, both exhausted but refusing to give ground. Eventually, the judges, whether believing the competition had reached a legitimate end or simply fearing that war would break out on the field if nobody intervened, called time and awarded a joint victory.

When the points were tallied, the caragita as a whole was a joint victory too, with Caris and Gun Huang triumphing largely as a result of their exceptional wrestling and being named Twin Champions, a phenomenon not seen at the Games since the introduction of foreign competitors and deemed a good omen for the Games as a whole by the Raaneki. All agreed it was surely the finest wrestling performance, and indeed the highest-quality caragita, seen in the lifetimes of any present.

Day 6, Naming of Champions

The crowds were summoned back to the square in Faraxham where the Games had been opened for the king to read the list of champions. "Peoples of Telluris. With the toasting of these victors," he announced, "the Second Tellurian Games have drawn to a close. May revelry in their honor be held until dawn! May we all toast the victors, both past and present!"

Awards

In addition to whatever awards are given by their nations, victorious contestants will receive a crown made of toma leaves woven together by Kornandon artists, a robe in purple or crimson (contestant's choice), a chest containing a Sparkfellow icicle, and an orichalcum(-plated) medal minted in commemoration of their victory containing the date and event which the champion won. The winner of the Caragita shall receive a Qarimosi-Jarr-crafted ocean-faring ship or equivalent cost in addition to the aforementioned rewards.
