Fast question: are experience points per level, or total. Is it 300 experience points for second level and 900 more for third, totaling 1200, or 300 and 600, totaling 900?

There is a set total experience you must reach to obtain a new level. So, to reach level three you need to gather 900 total XP. I believe it has been this way in most editions (not certain about 2E and prior).

The EXP listed is the total needed for that level.

How is experience divided between multiple characters? If a monster is worth 900 xp and is killed by 3 players working together, do they each get 300, or 900?

It is divided among the characters.

I have been playing since second edition and i can confirm it is total experience needed
