View Full Version : Fooling detect good

Good afternoon! I have a campaign idea revolving around a as of yet undetermined evil entity masquerading as a resident Big Good. A deity or something.

I don't want to handwave the ability to avoid or negate detect evil (and register correctly for detect good), are there ways to fool this under RAW? Could the evil entity wear a full plate suit of (heavily) good-aligned armor lined with lead to mask his 'background evil'?

Thoughts?

Thanks
Jenn

If you have someone around who actually IS Good, you can use Misdirection (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/misdirection.htm) for this. If you can get your Misdirection on an item, then you can use Magic Aura (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/magicAura.htm) to make that item not look like an item of Misdirection.

I like the idea (and I should have pointed out that this will be PF) but I am concerned that the more and more suspicious the PCs get, the less likely that trick will work.

A Ring of Mind Shielding (DMG) blocks any magical attempt to discern alignment.
To go a step further, a Mask of the Misplaced Aura (S:CoT) presents ANY divination with a false target that you can determine when you craft it, even True Seeing.

Master of Masks has an Angel Mask that would do nicely for detection spells. They'd still be subject to other alignment-based effects, but it would be more like "poke it and see what hurts it" than directly telling the alignment.

(... I was going to link to Master of Masks directly, but apparently the Complete Scoundrel Excerpts have been stolen from the internets! Irony, drat, and blast. :smallmad:)

If you don't want to block the spells, but to project a fake "good aura", I think the Planar Motes for the Upper Planes, from Complete Scoundrel do this.

This is what I am looking to do. Everyone and their animal companion is gonna be pinging for alignment, especially after his acts and reccomendations stop coming off as good. I want a solid 'good' reading, while masking the true evil alignment. In Pathfinder.

Firstly, there is a spell - Moral Facade (http://dndtools.eu/spells/complete-champion--57/moral-facade--591/)

Secondly, Spymaster (http://dndtools.eu/classes/spymaster/) and Zhentarim Spy (http://dndtools.eu/classes/zhentarim-spy/) have Deep Cover (Ex):
At 7th level, a spymaster becomes able to quiet her mind and completely immerse herself in her cover identity. While she operates under deep cover, divination spells detect only information appropriate to her cover identity; they reveal nothing relating to her spymaster persona.
At 5th level, the Zhentarim spy may choose a number of new cover identities equal to her Intelligence bonus (minimum one). These may be the same cover identities selected for the unlikely cover ability, or they may be different ones, or they may be a mixture of both. Unlike her unlikely cover identities, however, the identities she selects for deep cover need not be new.

When the Zhentarim spy is operating within one of her deep cover identities, her mind is so thoroughly trained and conditioned to think like the person she pretends to be that any magical scrying or mind reading at a power level short of deific reveals nothing about her true nature. Only the thoughts, alignment, and emotions of the fictitious persona can be detected.

Also:
Tattooed Monk (http://dndtools.eu/classes/tattooed-monk/) can have White Mask tattoo:
A character with this tattoo is immune to detect thoughts, detect lies, and any attempt to magically discern his alignment. He gains a +10 bonus on all Bluff checks.

Strifeleader (http://dndtools.eu/classes/strifeleader/) get Skilled Prevarication (Ex):
At 2nd level, strifeleaders become skilled in the art of telling lies. They get a +2 bonus on Bluff and Intimidate checks. Moreover, strifeleaders gain a +4 bonus on saving throws against the spells discern lies and zone of truth.

Disciple of Mammon (http://dndtools.eu/classes/disciple-of-mammon/) at the very 1st level get Lie (Su):
A disciple of Mammon gains a +4 competence bonus on Bluff checks and spell resistance of 11 + disciple level against spells that reveal falsehood, such as zone of truth and discern lies, even when spell resistance is normally not allowed (such as with discern lies).

"Fiend of Blasphemy" PrC (Fiend Folio) get Undetectable Alignment (Su) at 1st level, and Mind Shielding (Su):
At 5th level, a fiend of blasphemy gains immunity to detect thoughts and discern lies spells.

Finally, there was neutral evil paladin variant - Corrupter (Dragon #312), which get a Hidden Faith (Su):
A corrupter's faith in his deity becomes hidden when he reached 2nd level. He gain a +4 profane bonus to all Bluff, Disguise, and Forgery checks to maintain this deception, and any magical attempt to discern his actual faith fails unless the caster makes a successful level check (DC = target's Corrupter level + 10).

If you don't mind 3rd party, there's the inveigler template from Advanced Bestiary.

Wow, a bunch of good ideas, but this is probably exactly what I am looking for. Now I just need to figure out how to incapacitate a deity so they don't blow the whistle on the whole charade . (Which luckily doesn't have to be RAW, just make sense.)
