I love being GM. I've been a GM ever since I first started playing rpgs 15 years ago, and ever since I created my first setting and ran my first game in it I have been hooked. I play lots of games, but I always come back to Pathfinder. Theres just something about classes and spells and d20s that keeps me coming back.
I am, however, lousy with mechanics. Always have been. WHen I'm a player it's usually not so bad, because I have the books available and I only have my one character to get familiar with. But when I GM Pathfinder, I almost always hit a wall where I know what I want to do, but my lack of proper mastery of the mechanics hurts my ability to get there.
I'm specifically talking about encounters and encounter design, and monsters.
So how do I teach my brain how to think to be able to design challenging encounters that are fun for everyone at the table, me included?
