After a few days of travel, the carriage driver finaly said the words the four passagers were desperately waiting for.

" Here we are folks. Fort Inevitable. Not a smiling bunch, these guys. I'll let you out here, way less trouble for my old bones."

The old dwarf was checking the carriage and his horse as the four wayfarers disembark. Less than a hundred feets away stands a resolute stronghold of law and order: the walled town of Fort Inevitable.

http://i.imgur.com/DsoaCGB.png?1

From its stern keep, companies of Hellknights ride forth to enforce the strict laws of their commander and bring authority to the unclaimed lands of the Crusader Road. While the taxes imposed by the town’s rulers are heavy and the laws inflexible, no one can deny that prosperity has followed the Hellknights’ establishment of hard justice in this small corner of the River Kingdoms. Merchants, travelers, and adventurers journeying on the Crusader Road find that Fort Inevitable provides a rare island of safety in an otherwise lawless land—so long as one is careful not to run afoul of the Hellknights’ laws.

Coming down of the carriage, Alen took his backpack and leaned his head to the dwarf.

-I thank you, sir. May you travel safely on the road.

Alen was a fair man, with blue eyes that showed compassion and conviction, brown hair in a clean cut; his posture showed strength and assurance. He looked at the fort in front of him.

*My first real mission. Abadar guide my path.*

The hellknights weren't the friendliest of folks, and their enmity with paladins was known. Alen had to be careful not to let this affect his mission. He turned to his companions whom he didn't really know. Two ladies, a drow and a gnome. The drow seemed to be a priest of some kind though she kept to herself, wearing a symbol of Nethys. Alen tried not to mix up appearances with personality, and though he remained causious of the drow, he was polite and showed kindness to her. The gnome, far more gregarious, showed to be agreeable company. The last companion was a barbarian-ish figure.

I'm trying to include you all with the description I have, but I don't want to say to much, being the first post it is difficult to describe the interaction we had...

After everybody was ready, Alen and the group approached the North gate. As the knight greeted them, the paladin answered with politeness. Was it wise to say why they were here? Was there a problem with showing interest for some local business? Alen decided to be relatively vague, while saying the truth, as he was compelled to say it.

-Greetings. We came regarding some rumors. Let's say curiosity compelled us to come. Is there a problem, officer?

Brennus:

Brennus crosses his arms in front of him and steps up to the guard. He scowls and looks at him up and down, obviously sizing him up.

"Our business is our own."

Lyvia

Lyvia pulls her hood closer around her face. Ah Hellknights... Nethya has nothing against there particular brand of Diabolism, but it is always better to be safe then sorry around a Hellknight. Good let them do the talking. Lyvia stands in the back and hopes not to attract attention.

Ellywick jumps off the high carriage and stretches her limbs. Sitting for so long definitely doesn't suit her fancy!
Smiling, she looks up to the gates, then the guards clad in dark armor. She had heard of the Hellknights before, but never imagined them to be so stern-looking. A little intimidated she adds:

Yeah! Like the Big guy said!

The hellknight looked at each of the new comers one by one, as if she was trying to find something. She then look Brennus in the eyes.

" Everything in this town is hellknight business. Remember that." She wait a few seconds and say, looking at everyone : " But we are not here to stop traverlers from entering Fort Inevitable. It is simply easier to to keep order if we know if peoples are coming in with specific purpose."

She step aside to let the group pass.

" One last thing. If your "rumors" have anything to do with exploring old ruins or destroying goblins or orcs camps, don't forget to stop by the Citadel first. You need to get a letter of warrant first."

Lyvia

The gnome's comment amused Lyvia. She almost would have cracked a smile if she was able to smile any more. A century of slavery at the hands of the drow will do that to a person. Non-the-less she had enjoyed the gnomes ramblings about her faith during the trip, even if Lyvia disagreed with the tenant of the gnome's god. After all money was not true power, was it.

Lyvia looked over her other companions a Paladin of Abadar, Proud and virtuous something dark hanged over him although he tried to keep it hidden.

And a man of darkness who looked like had seen a thousand fights and come out on top every time. A brute for all intensive purposes, however Lyvia sense tingled whenever she looked at him as though he had been blessed. Lyvia wondered if the man knew.

This is going to an interesting journey.... What did that women say!?

Lyvia bow her head slightly and spoke softly.

Since when is it required to have a permit to hunt Orcs and Goblins, or explore ruins?

The hellknight look at Lyvia, trying to see her face under her hood but she give up fast.

" The Hellknights laws don't do not recognize the right of any self-declared adventurer to kill “villains” and seize their belongings. That’s common banditry. If you got a valid reason and a lawfull goal, you will have no problem getting a letter of warrant."

Alen

The barbarian-ish figure, Brennus, answered more bluntly that Alen, though in thought they wanted the same thing, be left alone. The antagonizing brute didn't know what he was asking for by challenging the guard, and if he wanted trouble with the entire garrison of hellknights, Alen doubted their chances of success. Of course, lawful soldiers would not simply be aroused by mere attitude. Alen didn't react. Brennus was just being who he was. Until he crosses the line, there was no reason to say anything.

Ellywick's comment made the knight smile, and he exchanged a look with Lyvia who remained frozen in her indifference. He really had trouble sizing the drow, never smiling are rarely talking. Great secret came from her. As for Brennus, the paladin knew so little about him. Some weird story seemed to follow this character. Warrior, that was clear enough, but apart from that... Mystery. Ellywick was by far the most transparent of the quartet. Amusing and talkative, she was far from annoying. They talked about their common god, their dogma, as well as other things, and though they didn't agree on the question of law and order, her heart was at the right place.

Lyvia finally talked, and the hellknight's answer to her question was not so suprising. Well, this should be interesting. The group will have to think about how they are going to get this warrant. Will it be as easy as the guard said? Well, no need to linger here.

We should find a place to talk privately about our options.

Ellywick

''I need big guys like him to go into the Spire'' Ellywick thinks to herself ''and the abadaran seems like he could be of use too!''
Ellywick can't agree more with Alen's comment. An idea suddenly crosses her mind. She steps up:
<<I am a servant of the Master of the First Vault, as is my friend here, and we are sent to request funds from mother Dremagne to set up an expedition into the Emerald Spire. Surely if the High Priestess gives me her benediction you will permit me and my...um...escorts to proceed? As for banditry... You must know the Abadarans creed against banditry: bandits are a plague. under my will they come to justice? We have no interest in killing off goblins or orcs for the fun of it or pillaging freely. I think... right guys?>>
Ellywick turns around and winks to the others.

To the listeners, there is something about the way Ellywick weaves her words that make them seem so trustworthy, so believable, or at least would have, had it not been for her hesitating.

A gentle smile appear on the hellknight face as she listen to Ellywick

" I don't have the autority required to give you a letter of warrant, as i am only a gate-sergeant, but with High Mother Dremagne on your side you should have no trouble convincing the Lady Commander."

She point at Brennus as he walk away in the city:

" But you should keep an eye on him. If he get into trouble it'll be harder to get on the Lady Commander good side."

As you can see with the map of the city i posted, it's really hard to get lost in this simple designed 3-streets fort. As you walk around, every shop or tavern is easy to find, that's why i gave you the name of every important location. Just tell me where you want to go and i'll take you there, if you don't enconter trouble on the way ;)

Madness! Obviously no law and order group would hesitant at people independently end a threat of a Orc or Goblin camp... Must be something else going on here. Maybe this was one of those surfacer jokes that I have a hard time of understanding.

Lyvia stares at the woman for a minute as if trying to figure out a puzzle. Wait what is the gnome saying!

I think a quite place would be ideal. Come a long Your Excellency.

Alen

Alen tried not to laugh as Ellywick invented a lie on the spot with hesitation. He turned to the guard.

-I will try to keep him under control if possible. Said he, talking about Brennus.

As he walked into the city, Alen thought about 3 important destinations.

-Let's go at the local inn. There we could find a place to talk and find our next course of action. Moreover, I intended to visit the church of Abadar, and Ellywick's idea is an good one. With the High Mother's approval we could very well get this warrant. It would be unwise not to get it. We don't want the local authorities hunting us down.

He started walking toward the Red Shield Tavern. There they could think of a plan instead of improvising like they just did.

The little gnome trots along on her short legs, trying to follow the huge steps of the large folk she's been travelling with. She stares around in awe, taking in the life of the fort. Distracted, she quickly falls behind. She shakes her head to refocus and runs towards the trio. Out of breath, she says:

<< Isn't this place great? So lively. And that lady at the gate was so sweet. Uh... So are we gonna stick together from now on? We're all going to the Spire from what I understand and we probably aren't the only ones who'll be going. Strength in numbers, right? I happen to be an archaeologist interested in Azlanti tech and I will definitely need some help in there. Me and Happy can't do it alone. I think I could be so generous as to offer to split all our findings 60/40. 40% should be well enough to split between you three, right? Plus I can forge weapons and armor for the lot of you! >>

Ellywick smiles from ear to ear.

Alen laughed.

How about we have an equal share, 25% each, as equity would dictate? I know how overrated it is, but I'm more of a conventional negotiator. Alen said with a little touch of irony. His code asked of him to be an aid to the market, ensuring equitable trades.

He slowed the pace so the gnome could follow.

We sure could help each other if it keeps up like this, though I need to get some information on a specific rumor first. I have a quest to fulfill, and I don't really know if the spire has anything to do with it. I am sworn to protect travelers, though, and so I will follow you at least until the spire if you wait for my investigation.

As they were walking toward the Red Shield Tavern, the group could see what the town really look like inside the strong stone wall. Within this formidable defense, the town is an orderly collection of two- and three-story stone houses and workshops with roofs of red tile or blue slate. If the streets seem a little cheerless and drab (except to Ellywick for some reason), at least they’re paved with good cobblestones and cleared regularly.

After a few minutes, they entered the tavern. They came in a large room with a dozen of round tables. On each of the side walls was a fireplace decorate with a few trinkets or various origins. But what caught their eyes first what a big round red-painted shield hung up on the wall in front of them.

It was near the end of the afternoon, and the tavern was already half-full. In the far left corner was a counter and a middle-aged human woman was standing behind it, busy with something they could not see. After half a minute, she raised her eyes and saw them. She talked to them with a loud voice, nearly shouting to cover the sound of the conversations.

" Welcome the to Red Shield Tavern! Choose a table i'll be with you in a minute!"

Lyvia takes a seat next to the big warrior. There was something comforting in knowing that Brennus would kill any person that gave them trouble it made her feel safe.

The knight sat by the two other members of the team. Maybe the bartender could give some information about the spire, or about Aiden. Since Brennus ordered a drink, he would wait for her to arrive. He answered to Lyvia.

Well, the best way to know is to try it. We should try to do it the legal way, it should not be so hard. I was curious to see the High Mother. Maybe we could offer our services in exchange for the warrant, depending what she needs.

But the real question is: why are we here? Why do you want to visit the spire? Curiosity, gold, personal reason? Once we know, we can get on the same level to know our final objectives.

Ellywick

The small woman gently removes the leather straps that are used to fasten the huge sword to her back. She leans the weapon ever so gently against the table, her eyes exhibiting a strange tenderness.

Ellywick then proceeds to stand up on her chair, to be at eye level with the others. She listens and stares intently, stopping for the first time to try to gauge these strangers with whom she will apparently be spending some time from now on. When she feels her turn is up she speaks :

I'm here for knowledge, pure and simple. Like I mentioned, I am an archaeologist. I wish to uncover lost technology to bring back into the world. The Azlanti were so much more advanced than we are, their tech could give a major leap to modern science! Just think of the possibilities; Abadar could only be pleased of the possible advancements for the civilized worlds he looks after, and not to mention the market price of these relics! So, yeah, we can probably make a little coin too. Also, for the experiences, the thrill of adventure, you know... stuff like that! I'd also really like to meet the High Mother while we're here.

Ellywick feels in a very good mood. The Abadaran is a handsome man who seems quite trustworthy, the warrior-type seems a little too inclined on killing everyone and anything, but that can be just fine in a place like the Emerald Spire. She'll just have to be wary to keep him on her good side. As for the dark-skinned one - who looks like a drow but with more humanlike features - Ellywick doesn't know what to think. She seems aloof, always on top of her game, and something in her stare just doesn't seem right. Still, you don't judge a book by it's cover. If she trusts her skills enough to be here with them, the gnome is willing to give her a chance - plus, it's always nice to not be the only girl around.

Making new friends always gets Ellywick emotional. With a quiver in her voice she adds:

I...I like you guys! Let me pay for the drinks.

Alen

Alen listened to both his companions. killing was the sole purpose of Brennus it seemed... Fair enough. Simple and easy to fulfill. The simpliest of men are always the happiest, they say. The paladin never saw him fight, but if he was as strong as his goal lead them to believe, he would be very useful to the party when it is time to kill things. Nonetheless, He could also be a threat, since he didn't seem to care about the party at all. As for Ellywick, she had an interesting goal (plus the usual adventuring stuff). Having an archaeologist with them would bring a new dimension about the adventure. As she got emotional, Alen smiled.

-It is a pleasure to do this in your company, Ms Murnig. I believe Abadar has arranged for our encounter in order to succeed. For myself, I am investigating on a rumor.

The bartender arrived, stopping him in his explanation. Alen believed it to be the right time to ask for some questions.

Greetings, ma'am. I would have the same as my lady partner. But before you go, I had some questions about some rumors. First of all, what can you tell us about the Emerald Spire? We heard some things, but I am curious to know what locals would have to say about the place. Moreover, I am looking for a man by the name of Aiden. " So you guys are here for the spire eh? Should not surprise me. I don't know much about it. Really hard stuff, harder than stone. in my younger days i would probably went to explore what's left, but i'm too old for that now and i have this tavern to run. And for this Aiden fellow, this doesnt ring any bell to me, sorry. I'll come back with your drinks."

Urtar

Urtar came in the small village a couple of hours ago, looking around and talking to some residents. He then went to the inn ordering something to drink and was left to his reflections. The monk was enjoying his drink when he saw a quatuor of traveler of obviously different origins come in. other. Sitting around the table behind him, he couldn't help but eavesdrop the conversation they were having. Knowing that they were asking the bartender about the emerald spire caught his attention as his journey also made him come to this place.

Turning around and tapping on the back of the 6 feet giant after the bartender told him about the wizards, he then asked:

I'm sorry to disturb you sir, but I couldn't help but hear that you were heading to the emerald spire. As i am also going the same way, I could be of help.

Brennus:

Though he was loath to admit it, the lowlands had several redeeming qualities. First and foremost was the abundance of alcohol. In the mountains, alcohol was rare and highly prized for it was almost impossible for the tribes to make their own. What little they had usually came from trade or raiding, and even that was a rare occurrence. Thus, someone giving you free alcohol was a mark of high respect.

The fact that Ellywick had offered to buy him a drink put her in a whole new light. Brennus claps her on the back, lightly since he doesn't know how she will react, and thanks her with a rare smile on his face. This event put him in such a good mood, that he doesn't react with the usual violence when someone taps him. Instead, he turns around and looks down at the monk. He then rumbles,

Welcome and sit with us, mister...? My name is Alen Gideon, here is Brennus, Miss Ellywick Murnig, and Miss Lyvia.

Looking at the man in front of him, he saw he had to deal with an Oread who was armed to go to adventure.

Don't worry, Brennus here isn't the friendly type really, but he doesn't speak for all of us (neither do I, actually). You are quite polite and you seem to know how to fight. Nonetheless, where my friends here are going it is known to be very dangerous. I don't know if you really want to commit yourself to this adventure, but I'm sure a extra pair of arms could be useful. But to be honest, this quest seemed like a good way to test my skills and push my limits. As you know, the journey of a monk is to follow a path that will test his body and mind until enlightenment.''

Making a small pause and showing a small smirk, Urtar then continued.

''As for the part that you are looking for, I do have some valuable information to share with you. Going from what the rumour circling around with the guards to what kind of enemies lies in the ruins and someone that might be of help to get the right to go and explore the spire. Take your pick, i'm willing to share one information to each of you in exchange of a small storie of your life so far.''

With his monologue finished, Urtar leaned back on his chair, waiting for the first brave ready to share their story.

Ellywick

《 Oh! Oh, oh! Me first, me first! 》

She looks around the table. Seemingly having the attention of the group, she starts:

《 I had a brother once. His name was Happy. He was the bestest of warriors and a great archaeologist. No one stood up to him. I admired him so much. We would explore old ruins and stuff together. I was a weak little girl but he was confident enough that he could protect me, and he always did. He taught me all he knew, spoke to me about the awesomness of the Azlanti, how we could learn so much from their achievements, and even more of their mistakes! You know about the Runelords, right? How they turned a little wacko in the end and all their civilization went baboom!!! Aaaanyways... my bro was the best, like I said. I sorta picked up my smithing skills so I could smith him some neat-o gear-o! So, one day, he went out without me... something to do with a ruin a little too dangerous for me. When he came back, he was all changed and weird-like. And before long he... he Bleached...》

Ellywick marks a pause. She spat her monologue almost in a single breath. The girl seems to realize what she was about to say. Turn by turn, she meets everyones gaze, before staring off into the void:

《 So I...I had to kill him... Because we... we'd promised each other we'd never let that happen... the Bleaching. Such a terrible curse... I killed him with these very hands...》

She raises her little hands before her face and slowly removes her gloves. The small appendages are burned and callused, the hardworking hands of a blacksmith, contrasting sharply with the naive, delicate appearance of the gnome. Tears roll down her cheeks, but her lips are smiling. Instinctively, her left hand brushes against her large sword. She downs her ale and laughs:

《 Don't mind me guys. Gotta keep smilin'. Next story! 》

Alen

Alen turned to Lyvia with a smile.

Are you afraid I'll skip my turn? I will tell you, don't worry. The point of this is to understand each other, and that include me.

The paladin stayed silent, listening first to Urtar the monk. Another interesting fellow in this adventure, it seemed. Then jumping on the occasion to tell her story, Ellywick told a very dark and sad tale. put his hand on her shoulder tenderly, as a sign of compassion.

I am sorry for you lost. It must have been difficult.

After a moment of silence, Alen talked again.

I still haven't told you why I'm here. But let's start with a story. My parents were nobles. They showed me and my brother love, but when I was really young we were taken away from our family and brought to the monastery of Abadar. My parents were made prisoners of the king for felony and corruption. The high priest was compassionate enough to take the sons of traitors and train us as two of their own. We were trained as paladins, and taught the ways of war and diplomacy. My brother became a important member of the order (You must understand that I was quite younger than my brother and while I was still training, he was adventuring around the world for the order). Sadly, he died during one of his quests.

Time passed, and came the time for me to go on my first real quest. There is one of our fellow paladins, Aiden, who was reported dead. Recently, we heard rumors that he was leading a group of hellknights. This news was unsettling, as it would mean he was still alive AND would have betrayed the order, falling to darkness. I was sent to investigate, to find him and bring him to justice. The rumors say he was last seen here, in Fort Inevitable. If my suspicions are correct, he would be interested in the spire, though I don't know why. I don't see why he would stop here otherwise.

Alen wasn't ready to tell them Aiden was in fact his brother. Maybe they would understand, maybe not. But the shame of felony that ran in the family still hunted the paladin's honor.

Who's turn is it now?

Lyvia

Lyvia ackwardly puts what she hopes is comforting hand on the Gnomes shoulder.

Take heart for Nethys sees the truth in what you did as he sees the truth in all things. As he saw your brothers spirit be embrassed by what ever god he believed in to live in peace until Nethys destroys or saves the world.

Lyvia nods at the paladin.

Not all Hellknights bring darkness. These ones I don't trust... They are not being... I sense they are being less than truthful in their motive for being here.

I guess it's my turn.

Lyvia takes a sip of her wine.

flatly.

I was born in the dark and to the darkness I will return. The drow masters were not kind even to one of there blood. To them I was a corruption a weak human dispite my appearence. I was forced to work a long side my mother in the kitchen as a cook. I wittnessed many a horors put opun until she was to weak to work any more. Then the drow had me kill my own mother to show me what happens when you become weak and to show the weakness of all humanity. I took her place in the kitchen and in the horror until Nethys set me free.

"I guess I'm left."

Brennus gulps done the rest of his ale.

"My name is Brennus Bloodbane of the Ice Wolf Tribe who roam the mountains far to the north. Living in the cold, rocky place that I called my home, if you were weak, you died. Always, our tribe had to fight to survive, whether it was against other tribes seeking to take what was ours, or against the elements that sought to batter us into submission. There is an ancient tradition that has existed since the formation of our tribe. Should two children be born within the same week, a rare and fortuitous event, they shall grow up as blood brothers. They shall live together, dine together, hunt together and fight together. They shall compete against each other in all things, for only through adversity can one become the strongest, fit to lead our tribe to glory. On the winter solstice of their sixteenth year, they shall fight to the death, proving to each other, the tribe and the gods who is stronger. I was born two days after my blood-brother, Clovis."

Brennus pours himself some more ale.

"I killed him, but he did not die. Some power saw fit to save his miserable life and grant him powers that surpass my own. Thus, he killed my chieftain and took over the tribe. For now, I seek challenges to become stronger until the day I can take my vengeance and finish what I started."

Urtar

After listening to Ellywick's story, Urtar was wondering what kind of emotions would have filled this energetic gnome at the moment she killed her brother with her own hands. One thing was for sure, she was a strong individual to have surpassed the sorrow that usually come with this kind of challenge.

Then came Alen's story. With what his parents were accused of, it's still incredible that both him and his brother came to be such honest men, fighting for the good in this world.Urtar now wondered why he tapped Bennus's shoulder instead of the men with such a benevolent aura.

Lyvia's story of horror was as much as the rumors about drows were. sadistic and twisted. But hearing it from the mouth of someone that lived it herself was definitely another experience. Thought it wasn't showing, it still seemed that her actions were dictated from things she learned instead of being filled with the feelings usually that accompagny them.

Brennus on the other hand. Urtar still wondered why he wasn't punched moments earlier. With a story like his, it usually means than first come first served when throwing his fist around. Still, Urtar didn't know much about the mountain clans up north but it sure didn't seem like a calm place.

In between stories, Urtar always took the time to drink from his cup, seemingly trying to learn from each stories. He didn't think most of them would share so much on themselves on their first encounter. When everyone shared their stories, he put his cup on the table and holded his part of the bargin.

''I thank you for sharing all your past experiences with me. I shall now hold my part and tell you what I know. Before coming in at fort inevitable, I stopped by the Spire. I didn't get to go too close as I spotted some goblins that seemed like using the ruins as their camp. I knew that with my training, I wouldn't be able to past around or take the chance in combat.''

Taking a small pause to drink the bottom of his ale, he then continued

''When I came in, I went for a look out for points of interest. I heard the guards talking about the rise of undeads in the area from what I heard, the clergy of Abadar think that it might be because of something inside the spire itself. finally, a resident here, an old adventurer, named Abernard Royst, is looking for people to help him test one of his theories about the spire. I think that with the clergy, a reason from the wizard that the bartender told us and a potential solution from Royst, we could get our permit to go on site and Brennus could stretch his legs with the goblins there.''

Letting all the information sink in, Urtar took a minute for the group to see if his information would be enough to let him join their group on their way to the spire.

After Urtar told him he came for information on the spire, Abernard open the door with a smile.

" Ho ho, i knew others would come asking for my knowledge. Come in, young one. Take a seat."

The old men close the door behind the monk, walk to his desk, turn his chair to face Urtar and sit. His house is full of books, potions, strange instrument. It's more a laboratory than a house, for what the monk can see.

" So you want to hear what i know about the Emerald Spire. Hehe. What a strange construction. With plenty of mystery around it. What the rumors and common knowledge tell us is that the tower is of Azlanti origin. And this is not entirely false, as an Azlanti renegade move in Echo Wood, about 10 thousands of years ago. But from my experiments and my researsh, i came to think that he build his fortress, wich is now in ruin, around something much older than that. The true Emerald Spire, from where he took the name for his tower, as nothing to do with the Alzanti. But i have not yet discovered is origins. If you and your group want to help me discover more, i would commission you to explore everything and bring me maps and description of the whole structure. I have gathered a rich reward to anyone who can bring me all these information, as i am too old to go in myself. Haaa, what would i give to be a young adventurer once again...."

And then he start to ramble about his young years when he was like yourself, a daring adventurer. As Urtar was about to leave, the old wizard aks him one to wait.

" One more thing. I have come in possession of a piece that is suppose to belong in the Spire itself. It is but a small sliver of skymetal noqual, a substance with inherent resistance to magic. The piece i have seems to come from a sculpted item with a serrated edge. If you can find this item, and bring him back to me if possible, i'll reward you and your group as well."

I try to find them using divination magic but nothing came up. Something is blocking me. So I would ask you to find what happend to them. I don't have false hope, they are probably dead. If they are, if you could at least try to find if they had any notes on their research, that would be great. So they didnt die for nothing."

She stop and take a deep breath.

" If you want to know, we are studying the inner spire, and we think the construction could be use as a portal. So these notes could be really usefull to open whatever mystery the soure is hiding. Alen took the letter, accepting the High Mother's encouragement. "Focus on what is in front of you". Yes, he should do that. When Ellywick muttered, Alen couldn't hear what she said, though she seemed happy about his promise. He smiled. Ready to depart, Alen was about to take his leave when the gnome had an idea. "Big bro's friend"? Who, him? Alen didn't know what to say, if he heard right. If he did, he felt honored to be held in such love by Ellywick. She was the type to show a lot of affection, he had already realized. He waited for the priestess answer. Maybe she could scry for Aidan?

After Lyvia's answer to Ellywick, Alen had to clarify.

Well, she didn't technically said that. She said she had a vision about a crowned skull, which would be linked to the undeads and the Spire, and that is was no coincidence we went to see her right after her vision. According to her, it is the will of Abadar that we go there. There is something in the Spire that grows more powerful, and we must learn what it is (and stop it if necessary). By the way, we got a letter of recommendation from the High Mother to help us get that warrant. I see all our trips were useful. Shall we go in?

He knock on the door and open it.

*Well, this woman know how to be bluntly direct!*

Alen stood as gallant and proud as a knight. He looked at the commander. It was time to get strait to the point.

It is indeed why I was sent here, though I have found another purpose by coming here.

He looked at his companions. There was no turning back now. Nonetheless, the fact that the commander knew why he came meant one of two things: she knew there were rumors regarding Aidan, or maybe he really came here.

However, I am still on my quest to find him. Do you know anything concerning the rumors about Aidan, commander Drovust? What has happened to him?

She stand up and start walking behind her desk.

" But one day, about 2 months ago, he vanish. We found his squad in Echo Wood. Well, the remaining of his squad. Only two survived, and they both told the same story. For a few days, Aidan was screaming in his sleep. He begun to act rashly, always talking about a crowned-skull. And the Spire. I ordered him not to get close to that damned ruin. The revelation hit Alen like a stab through the chest. For a moment, he could not speak. Said with such simplicity. Yes, he betrayed the order. Yes, he joined the hellknights. But why? How could he do this to his friends and to the family that adopted him? Only Aidan had the answer to those questions. Gathering his courage, he spoke again without showing his anger and grief.

You are not the only one who doesn't like to be betrayed. My order has sent me to bring him to justice if he is still alive. I will do as I was instructed.

Of course, it was understandable that he wouldn't tell everyone that his own brother betrayed him and his order. Of course, she was perceptive and already knew that we already wanted to go investigate the spire. after Alen gave the commander his letter of recommendation from the high mother. Urtar waited to see what she would say before adding his quests to the lot, not knowing if Royst had enough influence to tip the scale in their favor. The intrepid group leave Fort Inevitable for the mysterious Emerald Spire.

The walk went smoothly. First on the crusader road, then in Echo Wood, the group walk for 3 hours to finaly arrive at a wide clearing. As the travelers emerge from the Echo Wood underbrush, they find themselves staring up at a ruined keep guarding a broken central tower, all made of smooth, green glass. It’s obvious that a grand battle took place here many years ago, and the clearing around the ruin lies barren, with sickly weeds struggling to rise from the magic-blasted earth. Melted chunks of twisted glass pepper the ground, lending a green hue to the clearing’s light. Despite the damage, however, the glass of the keep itself seems to have avoided the ravages of time, with those pieces that survived the initial cataclysm unmarred by pitting or cracking, clean of moss and other clinging debris.

The stone staircase that led up to the tower’s door is now nothing more than a rubble-strewn cliff. On the tower’s south side, a dirt path winds up the steep embankment to a pitch-black doorway.

The truth is, it is quite early yet to make camp. I'd prefer to clear a few floors in the Spire before resting (it would give us a reason to make camp afterward, as we would need to rest). Otherwise, we could get attacked by creatures from inside while we sleep. Moreover, we know there are undeads around here. I'm not sure sleeping outside in plain sight would be a good idea. Before he can charge the goblin however, Urtar kills it. Brennus turns, gives Urtar a nod and says,

"Nice shooting monk."

He begins to run into the ruin, but stops and realizes that doing so will only open him up to more arrows. Inspiration strikes, and he goes to the dog's body, hoisting it up in front of him as a shield. Brennus chuckles and says,

"I'll take point since I now have a shield..."

He waits for Ellywick to cast dancing lights, and feels Lyvia's healing magic almost completely close up his arrow wound. Brennus then moves forward into the ruin, ready to use the dog's body as a shield against further ranged attacks.

That way I can just stay behind the front lines. hehehe. Fighter-types are great!

One dancing light in every square diagonally between the entrance and the stairs, starting with the square just behind the red line. They are hovering 20ft above the ground, so everything should be lit up in a 20ft spherical radius around the orbs + 20 feet dim light (or 40 for anyone with low-light vision) for 10 rounds. Ellywick chose the ''will'o'wisp'' version of dancing lights.

The four light balls fly in and Brennus follow, but as soon as he enter he realize the light don't help at all. Looking up, he see the dancing lights, but their illumination seem weaker than they should be.

As you can't see anything even with the lights, you move 20 ft in a straight line and come in contact with a wall.

For an unknow reason, the lights only illuminate a 5ft radius around each one, with no dim light furter. Lowlight vision still don't help.

If you have something that make light, you see exactly what i describ to Urtar a few post above.

Ellywick

Still a little pale, she smiles as she follows Brennus:

《 y...yeah...you're probably right. I suppose I could try to be more open to different... cultures. I mean, me being a scientist and all, I should look at things more objectively, right? Right...》

While Brennus observes the wall, she snaps her fingers:

《 Maybe after all this, I could visit your tribe with you? How 'bout it, Bre? Nothing better than field research to broaden your horizons! 》

Brennus:

Brennus turns around and there's a look of shear hatred in his eyes. He says in a low, bitter voice,

"No. I don't think that would be a good idea."

He storms off past Ellywick, away from the hole. Outside the tower area, he turns back and yells,

"On second thought, I'm sure Clovis would welcome you with open arms. If you're disgusted with the Ice Wolves' ancient traditions, I'm sure you'd get along with him just splendidly."

Lyvia

Lyvia didn't really know what the warrior was taking referring to, but it seemed to make him really angry.

Human's and their emotions...

Lyvia pats the gnome on the shoulder, and heads south and to east to the room with the double doors.

Urtar

As the minor conflict between Brennus's point of view vs Ellywick's stomac was comming to an end, Urtar tried to calm both parties.

Whispering to Ellywick that was near him: ''I don't think Brennus left on good terms, it might be better to keep those comments to ourselves. Maybe turning your head away while he celebrate is a good compromise.''

Now almost yelling at Brennus, since he was outside: ''Brennus, she didn't mean what she said and I assume you might want to come back in as there is probably more goblins in need of pummeling! I'll be the first to celebrate with you when we clear this floor. I might even buy you a gallon of ale when we head back into town!''

Hoping this would settle the conflict, Urtar turned to the small entrance.

''Anyone have an idea on what this rope does. Personnaly I think its either a trap or a way to close the opening after going in. Thing is, I don't want to pull the rope and sealing what might be a suprise entry point to somewhere...''

Any traps on the rope or can I find out what its meant for [roll0]

Brennus:

Brennus, his mood vastly improved with the promise of free drinks, reenters the tower.

"You make a very persuasive argument Urtar. I apologize for my outburst since it may have attracted unwanted attention."

He yawns.

"I'm not sure I'll be able to fit in that hole anyways, so I say pull the rope."

Would Alen and I fit through the hole?

Every one can enter, but any medium character suffer a -4 on attack roll and -4 on AC due to the lack of space to move

If it IS a way to close the door, better we at least be 2 on the other side. I wouldn't want Lyvia trapped alone on the other side. After I'm through, you may pull the rope. Of course, if a third member of the party is more interested in the hole than the rope, come with us.

Alen joined up with Lyvia, following in this tight spot. Who said adventuring was glorious?

Urtar

With both Lyvia and Alen in the tunnel, Urtar looks around for something sturdy, like wood planks or the goblin's horsesplitter, to try and wedge under the tunnel entrance to keep stop anything like a door in the eventuality that it would close on the Tunnel.

"Good luck both of you, but shouldn't we look at where the tunnel end before pulling the rope don't you think?"

In this description and the map below i assume you go to the end of the tunnel.

You follow the tunnel and find the end around 50 ft farter. It end the same way it start, on a canvas painted in green.

If you don't have a light source you see nothing, as usual. I didnt keep track of who have what so i trust you guys.

As soon as Alen pull the rope, every one heard a really loud crashing sound outside the tunnel (from where you come from).

Everyone that come out to see what happen see a large rocks and rubbles blocking the entrance to the circular room. See map below.

From this curving room, doors lead east and west, and a passage leads south. A small table with four rickety chairs sits in the middle of the room. Sitting at the table, a goblin who seems to have fallen asleep on his half-eaten plate of food.
