Tomorrow evening, I'm running this group (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?358929-Campaign-Log-Brothels-Archaeology-Mutants-and-Other-Questionable-Elements-(PF)) through this dungeon (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?362831-Building-a-Dungeon-to-Instill-Cosmic-Horror-in-my-Players). (Yes, we're way behind schedule actually getting there.)

They have a tendency to turn pretty much anything into a hilarious slapstick farce, but I want there to be at least a moderately creepy mood for this particular session, and I've had success doing so with other groups with the application of background music. (Playing this track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9CA0nhfL5c) on loop in an abandoned temple had a group from a few years ago so on edge that they forgot to loot the place.) Unfortunately, this group is also picky about mood music -- they thoroughly mocked my choice of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" as the background music for a trip through a creepy forest. (It's about human sacrifice -- what more do you want?)

Since my knowledge on this subject is sadly limited, I was hoping for some ideas.

(Note: as repayment for posting not one, but two threads this month asking the Playground for help, I'm going to try my best to update that campaign log this weekend.)

The 30 days of night soundtrack has some very creepy background music/background noise. Most of it's great for background unsettling noises, like so:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xW_AFUxABQ&list=PLA4377E6E37B343AC

That playlist has the whole soundtrack, just be careful that some of them go from brooding menace to psycho murder strings really abruptly (or just start at that like muffin monster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=036tpJFWyVg&index=3&list=PLA4377E6E37B343AC ).

Nox Arcana pretty much specializes in creepy ambient music. They have albums for all sorts of settings, vibes, and themes, from evil carnivals to haunted castles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0j0JXhdnU64 could work for you, but you can find a ton of their stuff on youtube (including handy premade playlists).

Here's an hour of just eerie background, no words (at least that I found): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLpQ_EPWtT0

Hope these help!

I suggest dark ambient music: Cryo Chamber (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVHOgH4XEyYx-ZEaya1XqCQ) is quite good in my opinion. I quite like the first track of this Atrium Carceri mix (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=CpmAD4gcLMo#t=0).

There's the standard suggestion of the Silent Hill OSTs (Silent Hill 1 starting from the second track onwards (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt7KeshGMpI&list=PL0D7F6715D87225D0&index=2)).

Amnesia the Dark Descent also has some good creepy tracks: link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmkBpCBLnCg).

Just saying, the first one is kind of heavy (in an epic way). What I mean is that I would prefer a more subtle theme. Cannot argue with your results, though.

Second, I did not find "Rite of Spring" especially eery. But again, no offense.

Anyway, I like to use these:

I don't know if it fits your dungeon, but this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI6_AvUAzxs) is always good for creeping madness.

Also, there was an old game that had fairly good ambience music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7MtL7g2T5w (This) is very good, but might get a bit too agitated later on for your use.
Maybe this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2GjsxZ0NLM).

Also, it might just be nostalgia speaking, so take all that with a grain of salt :smallwink:

I second Silent Hill stuff.

Tabletop Audio is a website that creates 10 minute pieces of music to suit different settings. I rather like it.

I often use the soundtracks to creepy films.
The score to "9" is quite effective at setting a creepy tone and i've used the soundtrack to the recent Wolfman film to good effect in the past.

Google "Symphonies of the Planets."

It's the electromagnetig static produced by the planets of our solar system, converted into sound. It's also exceptionally creepy.

For horror gaming, I have traditionally used the Silent Hill 1 & 2 OSTs, and the original American McGee's Alice soundtrack. They are all creepy as ****.

how about some Theremin music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTroHBYZirw).
