Does a monstrous humanoid count as humanoid for spells and such that affect only humanoid creatures?

No, Monstrous Humanoid (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm#monstrousHumanoidType) and Humanoid (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm#humanoidType) are two separate creature types (http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/typesSubtypes.htm), so anything that specifically targets Humanoid creatures (such as, say, Charm Person (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/charmPerson.htm)) will not affect a Monstrous Humanoid.

Correct. Humanoid and Monstrous Humanoid are two completely different types.

Right. They have superficially similar names only because they have superficially similar physical features.

Hence why if you're a Goliath and want to be bigger, always dip at least one level of barbarian for mountain rage.

OR dip Psychic Warrior for expansion.

OR just start as a half-minotaur.
