Hey playgrounders! I have been watching a lot of animes recently. One cool thing I noticed in some animes was utilization of chess as symbolism, or just as character development or anythig really. Chess is cool in a lot of animes. I was wondering if you guys have suggestions of animes with chess in them. Do you?
Ones I've watched:
No game no life
Code Geass
Durarara
I think there were others that I don't remember. Any others you guys suggest?

High School DxD. Its all chest I mean chess. :smalltongue:

There's a series called MÄR. The enemies are called "Chess Pieces."

RWBY is a hyper-popular American "anime" (our thread here is keeping pace with the MLP thread) and chess is featured prominently in quite a number of scenes, with a certain, rather sinister piece, being particularly worrisome.

It's good to know you keep abreast of your anime.

Hellsing has some chess metaphors in it.

The episode titles of Last Exile are all related to chess terminology.

So I may just use TvTropes for the one thing it's really good for:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChessMotifs

A few noteworthy entries:

* Black Butler uses chess motifs, if not actual chess
* Di[e]ce, apparently, despite the name being a modification of "dice", is about chess-themed death games. Name fail.
* Last Exile titled all of its episodes after various chess moves and includes a lot of chess imagery (and is a great show, incidentally)
*

I've seen Shougi and Go anime but oddly enough no actual Chess anime.

RWBY has chess scenes? I have watched most of RWBY, so it may be in the 2 episodes I haven't watched, or I may have just forgotten. Can you point me to those episodes? MAR sounds kind of cool. Do the people have different roles or anything according to chess piece, or are they just called chess pieces?

Chess metaphors? That's good. Does it actually use people playing the game for these metaphors?

That is kind of cool. Does the anime itself have any relation to chess?

Black Butler was already on my to watch list. Di[e]ce is too, but I can't find anywhere to watch it rather than read it. Any suggestions? Last Exile sounds cool. I might watch it.

That is what most people find, including me in previous research.

Any other suggestions?

Not as such. If I recall correctly, the titles do have some relation to the events of the episodes, but it's only symbolic. The plot is rather chess-like in terms of strategy, with focus on what pieces are in play and who controls them. (Those are literal pieces, not symbolic ones.)

Chess shows up in RWBY during the first volume they appear at the initiation in the Emerald Forest as the "relics" the students hunt A very important chess metaphor also appears In the message "Queen has Pawns" sent from Qrow to Ozpin. Finally, The Black Queen piece appears on the screens of the communication tower after Cinder messes with it.

RWBY isn't a chess anime though. MAR is! The organization, the ranks are named after chess pieces, the war games...its a chess anime.

High School DxD is just as much a chess anime as MAR, even if it is better known for pushing the envelop. Incidentally, MAR does not disappoint for fanservice...

As far as chess goes, in High School DxD, the demons are supposedly the original inventors of chess and the battles fought are metaphorically and strategically chess matches, with the full-blooded demons taking the role of kings playing with their "evil pieces." Each character's abilities are based on their corresponding piece. The main character is a pawn btw. This anime executes its concept with comedy and panache and is my gf's favorite anime (and she isn't a big fan of ecchi, harem romance, or chess).
