View Full Version : Lists of Classes

This is a list of every official class I have ever bookmarked. I posted it because I don’t always have my home computer handy, the WotC site is hard to navigate, and because a lot of people on the forums aren’t familiar with all the class options available to them in D&D.

I'll do my best to update this list as new content comes out. But if you know of a class or variant class feature that isn’t here, please post it, and I will update the main list. If you’d like to re-organize them somehow (Arcane Prestige Classes, Paladin Prestige Classes, etc) go ahead, and I’ll include them as well.

Everything on these lists are directly from the SRD or WotC website. Please do not post something unless you are 100% sure that it can be legally posted.

If you just want to look at the WotC consolidated lists of classes, spells, feats, etc (with book sources, but no descriptive information) it can be found here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/lists).

If you are interested in Homebrew material, you can find it in the Homebrew Compendium. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10826)

Also, feel free to use this thread to ask questions about the classes, or argue about the classes themselves (Archivist is broken, Monks suck, etc). Initially, I considered specifically asking people to just post useful links and questions and not to argue, but then I realized nothing I write could ever make that happen. So enjoy.

i wouldn't be suprised if WoTC came out with the base class compendium then the prestige class compendium. They would be huge books too, What I think they want is to turn the game into a 6-8 book 'core' which shouldn't happen, now too bad they can't just turn the compendiums into OGL...

Perhaps it is better if we organize this in arcane, divine, fighter, psion, paladin prestige etc, give a short description and also note if they are homebrew or not.

I don't think it's illegal to post that even on classes in books and give the title of the book so people can look it up, but I'm no expert, I'm willing to organize it further if needed...

"... every official class ..." means "no homebrew here."

Rumda, are you sure that's all OGL? If so... where can I get them?

Everything linked in the initial post is OGL. Those classes that Rumda listed are not.

Fax: Thanks for the numerous additions. I've added them to the list.

Deus Mortus: If you'd like to come up with better organized lists, I'd be happy to post them. If not, I'll probably get around to it in the next couple of weeks.

If there is a desire to create a list of Homebrew classes, I will do so on a separate list. I'll have to meander over to the Homebrew forum and scope things out. (Or better yet, someone else can do so, and I'll just update my main post). But by homebrew, I mean homebrew, NOT summaries of existing WotC content. I'd like to use this list as a resource, and I don't want it to get taken down because someone posts non-OGL material.

Again, thanks to everyone.

Actually, there's the From The Playground Compendium thread in the Homebrew fora (maintained these days by VT) that has a listing of a good deal of classes and PrCs, in addition to other things.

Deus Mortus: If you'd like to come up with better organized lists, I'd be happy to post them. If not, I'll probably get around to it in the next couple of weeks.

Love to, though I would like to know if I can use non-OGL material with a simple explanation of the idea of the class and a link, if I can do that I can just use the same thing I'm using for my Dungeons, Dragons & Data access database ;)

As far as I know, it is against forum rules to link to anything that copies non-OGL WotC content. We can all chat about it, because that falls under Fair Use laws. But we can't reproduce large blocks of text or tables that WotC wrote, or links to sites that do, because that would essentially be the same as stealing their intellectual property.

But I'm a statistician, not a lawyer. If its questionable, I would suggest you write a PM to a moderator and find out if its legal before posting it.

Wow, this is great (as I only have Core books), thanks.
Is there going to be a list of OGL feats, skills, races, etc like this?

Wait. So excerpts that WotC posts on their own web site are automatically OGL???

I thought they were "Non-OGL, but still allowed to link to them" sort of stuff.

Can another web site copy them? Or just link to them, so that the public can use them for free?

As copyrighted internet publications, they are subject to Fair Use (that is, you can link--and even reproduce in part or in whole--the text as long as you don't make any money off of it).

They are technically not OGL, though they are oft-referred to as such.

OK, that's what I thought. Except I didn't know it was legal to reproduce them in whole for non-profit. Thanks.

Ok, I've added a couple of updates, including the (useless) Swiftblade (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/prc/20070327) and all the classes posted in the thread. Thanks.

Sure.

This is a list of ways to gain natural attacks (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29095).

This is a list of ways to gain Rage and Rage like abilities (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36238).

Fax has a really good thread on the subject (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38935). Swiftblades suffer from some major problems:

1) Heavy entry requirements, including 3 feats (two of which are really useless for a spellcaster), and a really odd "only cast Haste" in your third level slots before you enter the PrC pre-req.

2) Lacks full caster level progression. I think in 4.0, all PrC should only have 4/5 caster progression. But in 3.5, there are plenty of full caster progression PrC.

3) The main benefit of Haste is an extra attack. But the only classes that can enter the class lack full BAB, and are rarely front line combatants.

4) The capstone 10th level ability negates many of the other lower level abilities, essentially rendering them dead levels.

So, maybe someone might use it for a 2 or 3 level dip. But its a very weak PrC.

Personally, I'm hoping for more streamlining in 4.0 I'm tired of every new book busting out a new class with a slightly different modified class with a new feature or two and mostly swapped out stats.

I was working out an basic matrix of Expert - Warrior - Mage - Priest that provided 16 'base classes' with a gradient scale. Then, abilities and class specific feats would be available dependant on what the class was. For instance, Warriors would have more feats available (like the Fighter) and Experts would have more abilities (like the Rogue). So an Expert/Warrior would be similar to the 3.5 Ranger, while the Warrior/Expert would be similar to the 3.5 Barbarian.

It's a bit less generic than the Generic Classes proposed by the UA, but it would still eliminate the need for all the new classes. Instead, lists of abilities could be included in new books, which would modify the flavor of the classes rather than remaking them... With 16 choices in flavor, it should be easy to pick the right (or at least close) setup for any character concept. (BAB, Saves, Feat/Ability progression, spellcasting type, etc.)

The only thing that throws a bit of a wrench is the mechanical difference between arcane magic and psionics. Psionics don't fit neatly in the paradigm of the matrix as outlined, but I suppose a compromise would be to allow anyone choosing the 'mage' the option to stat if they are arcane or psionic in nature.

I basically agreed with you for a long time, until someone pointed out to me that people who want to be able to do that already can under the current rules, or they play GURPS. Now I've made peace with the class based system, and having DM'd a lot, I think it leads to a much better gaming experience for newer gamer, who just have to master their class (and not class creation rules, or the intricacies of multi-classes, etc).

One of the other benefits of a class based system is ECL/CR. Sure, CR is a little nebulous, but at least opponents have challenge ratings. Most other systems I've seen don't have such trappings, which makes DM/STing one of those games that much more difficult.

That would be all well and good, if (and this is a very big if, in my book) each new supplement and splatbook didn't present classes that make the core base classes, or even dear god, prestige classes, obsolete.

Scout has a few niceties that make bow using rangers go 'damn, I wish I got that'. Warlock takes a specialist evoker, adds a bit of psion and creates a very unilateral class that still has a lot of fluff to offer.

The entire Book of Nine Swords rammed a giant flaming F.U. to the fighter. There might be reasons to play a 'generic fighter' but very few.

The Duskblade takes the Eldritch Knight and Spellsword and completely makes them obsolete. Sure, you're limited to 5th level spells, but the martial skills gained, not to mention the spell channeling, more than makes up for it - and the average EK or Spellsword won't have much higher spellcasting anyway - at least to be on par martially.

All in all, if all the classes were available in one book, with all the available feats presented in full glory, and all skills were described completely, with all the various examples and 'look what else you can dos' added in - it would make creating a character so much more of a challenge than it already is.

Player 1: "I want to play a thief type character"
GM: "ok, well, do you want to be the basic rogue, a sneaky ninja, a skirmishing scout? How about a thief-acrobat? Cat-burgler or spellthief?"
Player 1: "Um, what do they all do?"
GM: "sigh..."

At least with the original core classes, it was more along the lines of: Player 1: "I wanna be sneaky, I'll play a rogue - and I'll specialize in sneak attacks and hiding in the dark/on the roof and getting high initiatives."

Don't get me wrong, I like the abilities the newer classes grant - its just I don't think a slight modification to a classes HD, Saves or BAB while granting it a new ability ladder is worth the effort.

Give ability paths, like the ranger. Rogues can choose to concentrate on sneak attack, ambushes, ranged skirmishing, thuggery or larceny. Fighters can concentrate on mastery of a specific weapon, lesser mastery of a group of weapons, utilizing Rage to offset their martial capabilities, join a Holy Order and use the power of the gods to help them smite their enemies, learn to track and be one with nature, etc.

Depending on the archtype, the class might have multiple paths they gain ablilities from, some greater, others lesser - so a ranger type might have Greater access to tracking and animal husbandry with lesser access to a specific weapon combat style (ranged or two-weapon or whatever.)

It streamlines the whole flipping through thousands of pages to find 'just the perfect class' and brings it back down to 'what do you want to do' and 'how do you want to do it.'

I'll reiterate - I don't have a problem with new completely stat-ed out classes, per se; it's just the perception that anything new must inherantly be better, or people won't bother to buy/utilize the book. Its true for everything - and I can totally understand why some GMs limit games to just the three core books.

i wouldn't be suprised if WoTC came out with the base class compendium then the prestige class compendium. They would be huge books too, What I think they want is to turn the game into a 6-8 book 'core' which shouldn't happen, now too bad they can't just turn the compendiums into OGL...

I would be extremely pleased if Wizards came out with the following 3.5e material:

Complete Base Class Compendium (with variants)
Complete Prestige Class Compendium
Complete Spell Compendium (including bindings/maneuvers/psionics/mysteries/invocations, probably multi-volume)
Complete Intended-to-be-a-PC Race Compendium (I could take or leave this one)
Complete Monster Compendium (Which could include an index by Level Adjustment to fulfill the above)
Complete Magic Item Compendium

Don't get me wrong. I'm happy with the spell compendium and magic item compendium, but I don't like having to flip through a dozen different books to see the spell options available to me, or to pick appropriate abilities for NPC villains/monsters to have when DM'ing. The players have the time to pick through a dozen different books because they are only running one character. I'm handling an entire world when I DM and it would greatly simplify my life for these things to exist... and the players too, I guess.

My favorite books in 2nd edition were the Encyclopaedia Magicka and the Spell Compendiums. I'd love to see them brought back, but I doubt my dreams will come true. Wizards seems to be focusing all their effort on 4e, which is to be expected. Perhaps all the old stuff will be made open content and a 3rd-party will pick up the slack for these books.

Either that, or I can pick through my PDFs and bookshelf and put them together myself... hmm...

Edit: Oh yeah. Throw Skills/Feats/Skilltricks and 'alternate skill uses' in there as well. I'd buy em.
